On Friday, Year 3 spent the day completing a Design and Technology project.
Our design brief was: The first Pharaoh, Narmer, has tragically died. We need to design and build our own pyramids to bury him in and to show the Egyptians how their pyramids should be built. Remember our pyramids need to be as special as he was!
It was a very difficult project, because the pyramids needed to be self-supporting, strong, have an entrance, and traditional Egyptian features.
We spent the day practising how to fold nets, how to strengthen card and paper with laminating, corrugating and ribbing techniques, and designing our pyramids. In the afternoon, we begun to make our final pyramids.
Pharaoh Narmer would have been proud! The final pyramids were fantastic, and we were all very proud of our creations.

Today we spent time with the people we love in an extended Morning Job.
The children sang along to 'Dream a Little Dream of Me' by The Mamas and The Papas and the adults were so impressed with them. A huge round of applause and then on to a craft activiity. Together, they created collage hearts before the adults wrote beautiful messages of love to the children. After a photo in the love booth, the adults waved good bye.
It was such a special time to share with our families. All of the staff had a tear in their eyes as they reflected about how supportive our parents and carers are. Thank you for coming

This week we completed our Design and Technology project all about Wind Vanes. We looked at how weather can be measured and started to look at wind vanes in more detail. We looked at their purpose and what they needed in order to show the wind direction. We discussed what an axle was and how it could be used to create a wind vane. We designed the top of our wind vane, made it and evaluated it outside in the playground. We quickly realised that the top of the design shouldn't be too large and the cup needed to be attached securly on the paper plate!

We have really enjoyed reading Michael Morpurgo's amazing book about a boy called Michael who sails around the world with his parents and finds himself falling overboard and washed up on a deserted island- but is he really alone? What a fantastic adventure- we have enjoyed every chapter in this brilliant book and we are looking foward to watching the new animated film version as a treat this week for all our hard work preparing for our SATs! Well done Year 6!

Does the rain fall the same amount around our school? - continued!
Date: 9th Feb 2025 @ 9:06am
After 1 week we measured the amount of rainfall collected in our 3 rain gauges! We were very excited to find out if they had collected the same amount or which one had collected the most.
The results showed that rain gauge 3 in our garden area had collected the most rain with a measure of 40ml! The other rain gauges had collected less than 10ml! We explored why this is and we thought that it was to help the plants grow!
Children's Mental Health Week and Amazing Designs!
Date: 7th Feb 2025 @ 3:53pm
Hello!
This week has been Children's Mental Health week where we have explored the theme 'Know Yourself, Grow Yourself'. The children discussed how they can learn more about themselves and what makes them the person that they are. We discussed that all of us are different. We have our own qualities, talents, thoughts, opinions and personalities. This is what makes our world a wonderful and diverse place. By developing our self-awareness, we can identify and understand how we feel in different situations. This can help to build resilience and confidence. We took part in 'Place2Be's' Inside Out themed activities, creating memory boxes where the children had an opportunity to write their memories and store them inside. We then watched the 'Inside Out' film during Golden Time and discussed the different feelings and thoughts that we have.
Artists in the making!
In preperation for our recount writing next week, we made Chinese New Year dragon hats in design and technology this week. This is also linking to our learning of Wuhan in China and the different celebrations they have compared to Manchester. The children used oragami style techniques to make their dragon face templates and then designed these using lots of different materials. They even practiced their sewing skills and used a needle and thread to make their dragons nose!
Home Reading
Myself and Miss Imran have been really impressed by all of the children who have been reading at home and having their reading records signed. 'Oscar the Reading Owl' has been to lots of houses over the past couple of weeks and we have seen such an improvement in a lot of the children's reading in school.
We do ask that you spend time to listen to your child read every night and log this in their home reading record.
Have a lovely weekend :)

This week, year 3 have been writing instructions on how to mummify a person. We have read many different instructions in order to gather information, and have practised writing adverbs and time connectives.
We then wrote our instructions, carefully considering the equipment an Ancient Egyptian would use.
Today, we were able to test our instructions! Year 3 used drama to act out their mummification techniques, and even used toilet paper as their 'soft linen bandages.'
Year 5 Proudly Present Their Ancient Olympics Reports!
Date: 6th Feb 2025 @ 1:20pm
Year 5 have been learning all about the Ancient Olympics and have written fantastic non-chronological reports packed with interesting facts and detailed information. They researched, planned, and organized their ideas carefully to create engaging and well-structured pieces of writing. Everyone is incredibly proud of their hard work—take a look at the attached pictures to see their amazing efforts!

Year 3 have completed some fantastic learning this week!
In history, we have explored the legacy of Ancient Egypt. We did this by learning about Egyptian myths, creating and playing an Egyptian game, exploring artefacts and translating hieroglyphs.
In maths, we have begun to explore right angles. We used right angle finders to see what objects around our classrooms had right angles. We also learnt some new vocabulary: angle, fixed point, rotate, clockwise and anticlockwise. Can you remember what they mean?

This week in our Jigsaw sessions we have been looking how we must challenge ourself to overcome any struggles or difficulties that we may have. Miss Timmins set us the task of drawing around their hands, decorating them and then cutting them out. A lot of us felt quite upset when we were not able to draw around our hands or cut them out. It was quite tricky!!! However, with some perseverence and resilience we managed to do it! Hopefuly this activity showed us that with some perseverence and not giving up attitude that we can tackle aspects of learning that we may find a little bit difficult.

Over the last 3 weeks we have been learning about Little Penguin and how much he wanted to fly. This week we innovated a new page for the text during group time. The children love to draw in Nursery and our learning gives them lots of ideas. Here are a few examples of what the children drew using their knowledge of Antartica and the story 'ICan Fly'.
Wood Street Mission & a visit from 3JH!
Date: 26th Jan 2025 @ 3:52pm
On Friday we had a visit from some volunteers from Wood Street Mission who are a charity helping local people in Manchester. They came with lots of amazing books. We were able to choose five books from the selection for Year 1 and take home for FREE! As soon as we got back to class we wanted to have some quiet reading time and look at our new books. Reading for Pleasure at its best!!!
In the afternoon we had a visit from Miss Higgin's Year 3 class who came to read their own versions of the traditional story 'Cinderella.' We loved listening to them and Renato thought they were 'Amazing!!!' Thank you Year 3!
Date: 26th Jan 2025 @ 3:47pm
In computing this half term we are using our algorithm knowledge and learning how to use Beebots. We have learnt how to use the different command buttons, create an algorithm and test it by inputting it into the Beebot. We also recorded some videos showing reception children how to use a Beebot!
Date: 25th Jan 2025 @ 11:40am
All of year 3 came back to school after the Christmas break, eager and excited to learn. There has been none stop smiles, hard-work and resilience across the year group.
In history, year 3 are learning about the Ancient Egyptians. We have visited Manchester Museum, where we were able to study real Egyptian Artefacts, as well as some items from our previous geography and history learning - such as rainforest animals. This was a great day out, as we were able to connect the learning we have done in the classroom, to the real artefacts we could see in the museum.
In science, we are exploring all things bones and muscles. So far, we have identified the different bones that humans and animals have. We have also worked in teams to create moving skeletons! Next week, we will begin learning about different types of muscles.
In english, we have been reading different versions of Cinderella. We then practised writing dialogue, 2a sentences and using adverbs, before writing our very own versions. On Friday, we visited both year 1 classes and shared our stories. It was amazing getting to read the stories to the younger children, and we were very proud of our work.
Does the rain fall the same amount around our school?
Date: 25th Jan 2025 @ 7:53am
Our new connected curriculum is 'Why is the weather so wonderful?'. We have been learning about how meterologists study the weather patterns and use diffferent types of equipment such as rain gauges, wind socks and weather vanes.
As geographers, we wanted to role play being meterologists and asked the question does the rain fall the same amount around our school? First, we studied a map of our school and predicted where and if the rain would fall more in one place or another. Then we have made our own rain gauges using plastic bottles and labelled them bottles 1,2 and 3. We then plotted on our school map where they should be placed to collect the rain water. Afterwards we used our school maps to find the places to place our rain gauges which was lots of fun. Each week we will go and retrieve our rain gauges and measure the arount of rain fall. Most of us predicted that the rain will fall the most in Stuart's garden because the garden needs rainwater to grow the plants.
Log on next week to see if we were correct!
Date: 25th Jan 2025 @ 7:36am
Last week, in maths we were learning to recognise and name 3D shapes. We explored the classroom to find different 3D shapes and the sorted them into groups. We problem solved the differences between a cube and cuboid as they are similar. We found that the most popular shape was a cupoid and the least popular shape was a triangular prisim.
Have a look at home and see which 3D shapes you can find!
In the style of Andy Goldsworthy...
Date: 24th Jan 2025 @ 5:04pm
Year 6 began their new art topic this half term, looking at the work of Andy Goldsworthy.
Andy Goldsworthy is a British sculptor who uses natural resources to create works of art. His work is described as ephemeral, which means it's only meant to last for a short time.

Y6 started by collecting their natural resources from the school playground, putting them into patterns and sketching what they could see. Then, they tested different methods of leaf printing, using paint, pastel, chalk and felt tip. This will build up to creating a piece of ephemeral art outside in the garden next week. Hopefully, it won't be windy!
Have a look at some of the fantastic work Y6 children have completed.
Will it float? Or will it sink?
Date: 24th Jan 2025 @ 2:56pm
This week in Reception we had a special challenge! We had to help Noi and his Dad to make a brand new boat to help them to get home...
We experimented with different materials in our classroom to try and find which objects float and which objects sink. Some objects like our light wooden box floated on top of the water: we decided they would make a very good boat! Some objects fell all the way to the bottom of our bucket. They sank, and we thought it would not be a good idea to make a boat from these materials. Paper and rock sank really quickly!
You can find the story all about Noi and his Dad here on Youtube:
Have a look below at some of our boats...

This week in maths, the children have had a great time folding different shapes to find their lines of symmetry.
In reading, we have been looking at different explanation texts in preparation for writing our own next week.
Reminder to the children to practice their 8 times tables by completing the next three pages in their booklets for their homework!
Date: 24th Jan 2025 @ 2:18pm
Hello!
2AH have blown myself and Miss Imran away this week with their passion to learn!
The children have been really lucky this week as we have had Wood Street Mission's roadshow visit our school. The children had a chat with the staff from Wood Street Mission all about reading and were able to choose 5 free books to take home. The children chose their own books, looking at the front covers and reading the blurbs for something they will really enjoy.
In Maths, we have been working on multiplication, practicing our 2, 5 and 10 times tables. The children have been having so much fun dancing to Jack Hartmann's lesson warm-ups, retrieval practice on the iPads and going for times tables scavenger hunts in our outdoor areas. Next week we will be looking at doubling and halving numbers which the children have already been recalling from Year 1.
In English this week, we have started to read 'Winne and Wilbur at Chinese New Year'. We have been discussing all of the amazing adjectives that we can use to describe a Chinese New Year celebration parade, discussing what we can see, hear, smell and feel. The children have loved listening and watching the different ways in which people celebrate such as seeing the red lanterns, dragons, lion dancers, drummers and discussing all of the tasty food. Click this link to listen to 'Winnie and Wilbur at Chinese New Year' : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yuw4L3OEao0
In Geography we have continued our learning of Wuhan and Manchester. This week we have looked at the human features that can be found in both. The children were really excited to discuss the local human features they know such as the Velopark Cycling Centre and the Etihad Stadium. Within the children's homework this week there is a Geography challenge to go on a walk and spot the human features around us, which I am sure all of the family can enjoy.
We have also introduced 'Oscar the Owl' in our class. Oscar is a reading teddy which will be given to a different child each day to take home and read to that night. Please ensure that your child's reading record is being signed each night as we do monitor this and reward children who have had their reading record signed every day.
Thank you,
Miss Hindle.
