Mad about Minibeasts!

Date: 22nd Apr 2025 @ 8:51pm

Today the children came back to school to find a muddy note in the classroom. It said - Minibeast hunt - Go in the garden, what will you see?

In groups, the children went into the garden, they took pens and minibeast hunt checklists and searched for minibeasts.

Some children thought they might be looking for something tiny whilst others thought they could be looking for big monsters!

Eventually the children discovered the book 'Mad about Minibeasts'. Together we read the book and spotted the different rhymes. The children discovered that minibeasts are infact insects like worms, spiders and snails. They searched under rocks and in the trees and leaves and found some minibeasts.

This week the children will continue to read the book and spot the different rhyming words.

Our trip to Portland Basin!

Date: 31st Mar 2025 @ 3:55pm

Hello!

We had amazing week last week in Year 2 which ended with our fantastic trip to Portland Basin Museum. The children started their day in a 'Put to Work' Victorian workshop where Hannah the housemaid. The children immersed themselves in role play, pretending they were working as cleaners in an estate home, in the coal mines and in a cotton workhouse. The children were shocked when they learnt that Victorian children had to do such tough jobs such as picking for coal in the mines, scrubbing floors and having to quickly get under cotton machines, all for a 25p wage or less!

Following the workshop, we were able to walk through the Victorian street. The children were able to dress up, play with Victorian toys and explore a Victorian school room with playground, a green grocers, fish and chip shop, dressmaker's, Doctor's surgery, chapel and pub. The children had a lot of fun in the classroom, learning the Victorian school rules and comparing how different school is today. It was lovely to see the children exciting in their learning and applying what they have learned in their activity booklets. Take a look at some of the photos below to see what we got up to!

Portland Basin

Date: 30th Mar 2025 @ 12:21pm

This term the children have been learning about Queen Victoria and as part of the learning the children visited Portland basin in Ashton to find out what is was like to live in Victorian times. During the day, the children got to explore a victorian town, dress up in Victorian clothing, find out what it was like to learn in a victorian school, explore victorian artefacts and what it was like to work in as a child in victorian times.

The children were shown how to cook and clean. They were told not to give eye contact ad keep their heads down when an adult was speaking to them. Some of the children were very scared.

They experienced what it was like to work in the mills and in the coal mines. All the children worked hard because they didn't want to a nail in their ears for poor work!

They looked closely at artefacts. They described them and then had a go at working out what they were and what they were used for.

We just love shapes!

Date: 30th Mar 2025 @ 11:59am

This week, we have been learning about 3d shapes and have used 2d shapes to make them. We have been identifying, naming and sorting the shapes and then using the correct mathematical vocabulary to describe them. It has been tricky, however as the week as progressed the children have become better and better at describing thier properties.

IMG_0149.JPG   IMG_0151.JPG IMG_0155.JPG  IMG_0158.JPG

The children used sentence stems and the hard to read and hard to spell words from the working wall to help them.

This is how they described their shapes.

This is a cube. It has 6 square faces. It has straight sides  and It has vertices.  It has squared cornered vertices. It has no sharp points.

They found 3d shapes in the environment and talked about the shapes that they could see in school and at home.

Have a lovely weekend

Mother's Day and fun with fractions!

Date: 28th Mar 2025 @ 3:48pm

Year 5 have had fun this week applying their times table knowledge in order to simplify fractions, it's a tough one but they've all worked really hard to get the method right.

In preparation for Mother's Day this weekend, they have had the opportunity to make cards to bring home and they look amazing!

We are active!

Date: 27th Mar 2025 @ 2:44pm

Hello,

This week, the children have been having lots of fun and getting active in their learning! They worked with Amy the city coach who supported them with throwing, catching and aiming the ball! They worked really hard to control the way in which they caught the ball and Amy was so impressed with how hard they worked. The children had developed their skills so much during the session that Amy asked them to play some team games. The children especially liked the Fire and Ice game!

This weekend will mark the end of Ramadan and the beginning Eid celebrations around the world. To mark the occasion and to celebrate in our own Ravensbury way we were visited by Faz. Faz brought along his violin and his amazing beatboxing talents and shared them with the children in a very exciting assembly. The sounds of beatboxing were echoing around the building all day!

This afternoon, Year 1 and Year 5 were lucky enough to have a beatboxing workshop with Faz. It has been a great day and the children have really looked up to Faz as an inspirational muslim person coming to our school!

Which will material will be waterproof for Bunting's umbrella?

Date: 23rd Mar 2025 @ 8:10pm

In science this week we have been testing out different materials to see which one would be suitable for Bunting's umbrella from the story 'Lost in the Toy Museum.' We used learnt how to pipettes and a few different materials and tested them by dropping water on each one.

We went through the science investigation process by predicting which material would be waterproof, carrying out the investigation using the correct equipment, gathering the results and discussed what we found out.

We found out that foil or plastic would be the most suitable materials to use for Bunting's umbrella!

Red Nose Day

Date: 21st Mar 2025 @ 5:34pm

It's Red Nose Day!

Science- Smoothie Making

Date: 21st Mar 2025 @ 1:14pm

Year 5 had an exciting science-meets-cooking lesson, making delicious smoothies using dry ice and fruit juice! As they poured the juice over the dry ice, a cool mist swirled around, creating a magical effect. The children learned about states of matter and how dry ice turns straight from a solid to a gas. It was a fun, hands-on experience, and the smoothies tasted amazing too!

Do stems transport water?

Date: 18th Mar 2025 @ 3:15pm

This week in science, year 3 have been learning all about the role the stem plays in plants. We learnt that it is the xylem that is reponsible for helping transport water through the stem of the plant, but we wanted to see how well it worked.

In order to test the xylem, we added blue food colouring to a jug of water that contained tulips. To our surprise and delight, the petals of the tulips turned blue!

Caterpillars!

Date: 14th Mar 2025 @ 4:08pm

We had a very special delivery come into nursery on Monday!

Our very own Hungry caterpillars!

We have enjoyed watching them grow over the week. We discussed how they hached from an egg and what we predict to happen next from learning all about the life cycle of a butterfly.

We are all very excited to see them turn into beautfiful butterflys!

We even thought of some names for them so please enjoy looking at some pictures of Keith, Chris, Cookie, Wriggle and Grey!
