Good Morning Reception,

Good morning Nursery!

Now we are going to play a game of I spy by saying the sounds in a word and blending the sounds together to say the word.

Today’s phonic challenge is to play a game of ‘I spy’ with your grown up.

To play this game you will need to find some of the following objects: hat, cat, cup, mat, dog, hat, zip, peg, pan, pig, sock, can etc.

Place the objects on a tray.

(Adults – name each object with your child to check they can name each one.)

Adult say ‘I spy with my little eye a c-u-p'

Ask your child to say the name of the object and hold it up.

Then encourage your child to say the individual sounds and blend them together ‘c-u-p, cup’.

Repeat for another object. Continue playing the game saying the sounds and identifying the object for all the items on the tray.

Yesterday, we practised our counting skills by counting different groups of minibeasts. 

Today we are going to continue to practise counting by counting the amount of spots on the ladybirds. You will then need to look at the numerals and select the number that matches the amount.

Remember to point and say a number name for each spot you count and then find the correct numeral to match the amount.

Weekly Vocabulary Challenge – Superworm

This week we are looking at the book ‘Superworm’ by Julia Donaldson.

Ask your grown up to read this extract from the story which tells us what ‘Superworm’ is like.

 

 

Listen carefully then join in with saying the words that describe ‘Superworm’.

Tell your grown up the words and make up some actions to go with them…

‘Superworm is super-LONG, Superworm is super-STRONG.’

Challenge 1:

Your first challenge is to find something long and strong. Then have a go at making a long, strong worm using playdough. (I have attached a recipe for you to make your own dough at home)

Can you talk about your playdough worm too? What words did you use to describe how you are making your worm?

Reading activity

This weeks reading activity is to read and listen to one of the songs below. We want you to think about what the words in the song really mean. Look at the lyrics and read or sing them again. 

How is the character feeling in the song?

Are they angry, frustrated, excited?

We want you to to think about why the character is feeling this way.

 You might also find it useful to listen to the music, does that give you any clues about what the character is thinking and feeling. 

Choose one of the songs below and have a listen, you might want to listen to one every day but don't forget to try and read the words to the song as well - these are called lyrics. Don't worry about thinking about all of the words in the song. You can stop the song and talk about it in small parts rather than the whole song.

Wellbeing challenge 1.6.20

As you know, Mrs Glover has been setting us wellbeing challenges to keep us feeling positive and productive over the last few months. It has been fantastic to look back at all the photos you have sent her showing your creative work!

For the next few weeks, Mrs Glover is lucky enough to be going into school each day to teach as we  start opening up the school to certain year groups, so I'll be setting your wellbeing challenge.

So, here's your challenge for this week:

Can you set yourself an exercise goal for the week and try and do a different  exercise each day? It could be going for a walk with your family, making up a dance , going on a bike ride, jumping on your trampoline, doing an online workout like Joe Wicks or doing 30 star jumps in your kitchen!

Monday sentence of the day and phonics

Good Morning everybody and welcome back! We hope you all had a lovely week off home learning and took some time to enjoy being outdoors in the sunshine. It has been a lovely week for us, full of walks and reading books in the sunshine but now we are definitely ready to carry on our home learning and see what the next few weeks bring!

 

Sentence of the day

Today’s sentence of the day focusses on our tricky words. I have put a poster below so that you can check the green for growths and make sure all of the tricky words are spelt correctly.

Phonics

Todays phonics focusses on the phase 5 tricky words, just like our sentence of the day! Let’s get your brains warmed up and ready for some challenges. Have a look at the words below and play a game of fastest finger with your grown-ups. Ask them to say a word and you need to point to it as quick as you can. Don’t worry if it’s a bit tricky at first, with practice you’ll make progress and get faster and more confident!

Challenge one – Rainbow writing! If you have a dice in your house, nows the time to get it. I not don’t worry, you can write the numbers 1-6 onto pieces of paper and close your eyes and pick a number instead of rolling a dice.

 

Challenge two – This is the quick write challenge! Now that you have practiced reading and writing the words your challenge is to see if you can spell them correctly without any clues. Watch the video below and when the video says a word it’s your job to write it down as quickly as you can. You can check if you have spelt them properly at the end by going back through the video.

Challenge three – For challenge three I want you to make me some sentences using the phase 5 tricky words, just like the sentences I made for our sentence of the day. You can make them silly, funny, serious or if you’re really up for a challenge you could see if you can make a story using the different words.

Welcome back Year 1

Good Morning and welcome back year one! We hope you all had a lovely week off and had a chance to enjoy the sunshine! It has been a lovely week for us, full of walks and reading books in the sunshine but now we are definitely ready to carry on our home learning and see what the next few weeks bring!

 

The home learning will be exactly the same as before the holidays. We will post a maths challenge, a sentence of the day and a phonics challenge every day as well as a reading and writing challenge once a week. You will also get a Connected Curriculum activity to do this term, this will be a bit similar to the end of term homework activities that we send home at the end of every term.

We hope you have had a lovely break and ready for learning. We have spent alot of time getting the year 1 classrooms ready for your return, making sure that each child has got 1 table each and has got resource pack ready to allow each child to work independently, without adult support. 

To make sure that you will be prepared for this way of working we are going to spend the maths session today focussing on writing the days of the week and practicing how to write the long date. We have done this before so do not worry. We just need to get ready for year 2!

Good Morning Reception!

I hope you have all had a lovely break and have made the most of the fantastic sunny weather! How did you spend your break? I would love to hear all about what you got up to in the holidays! J

Let’s warm back into our maths learning by beginning with a fluent-in-five – you should all be experts at these now!!

This term in Reception, we are going to be learning all about PIRATES!
I thought it would be a great idea to use pirates to help us in our maths learning today, I have even included an exciting pirate song to listen to below! Take a look!

This morning in our maths learning, we are going to practise our addition skills by adding together pirate items and writing the calculation down as a number sentence.

You can begin by choosing one of the items below!

 

See if you can draw one of the items and see how many you can make! Count out each one at a time, adding one more as you count.

Ask your adult at home to write you a calculation – Can you work this out by using your pirate items? Now can you write your own number sentence? Take a look at the example calculations below… Can you work them out?

Monday June 1st - Welcome back Year 2!

Good Morning Year 2!

Welcome back to another half term of fabulous learning. We do hope you had the chance to enjoy the sunshine and relax over the past week. If you've got any half term photos to show what you've got up to, we'd love to see them!

Your home learning this half term will be brought to you by the wonderful Miss Woodnett and Miss Wendt! Please don't worry about Miss Hamer, she is still with us at Ravensbury but she will be working with some of the children who are currently based in school.

Some of you may have already worked with Miss Woodnett in Y2 before the break so you will be very familiar with her. Miss Wendt usually works upstairs in Y5, but she did used to teach Y2 so jumped at the chance of working with KS1 again. I'm sure you will have seen her in school before.

Everything else will stay the same. There will be daily activities and weekly actvities to complete loaded onto the Padlet. There will also be science, connected curriculum and reading challenges.

Connected Curriculum Challenge!

I am so excited for you to get started with these brilliant Connected Curriculum activities, which are all to do with our new topic of Spain, specifically looking at the question:

Why is Spain such a popular tourist destination?

Spain is a beautiful country with a fascinating history and culture. It's geography (for example the climate and landscape) all helps it be an incredibly popular destination too. 

There are eight different activites for you to choose from in the attached document - ranging from cooking to dancing, art to geography...and more! A couple of the activities need additional resources, and I have attached those to this blog too. Other activities have a YouTube link that will help you, so make sure to check that out too. 

Choose whichever activities you like, and however many you like - some might take several hours, others will be much quicker.

Welcome back Year 5!

Well, goodness me, I can't believe we're entering our next half term of virtual school! We hope you had a lovely half term and enjoyed the fabulous weather (it almost felt as if we could have been abroad didn't it?!). If you've got any half term photos to show what you've got up to, we'd love to see! 

Just to let you know, Miss Wendt will be helping Year 2 with their virtual school learning for the next little bit, so Miss Brookes and I will be posting all your Year 5 learning. So 5HW - don't worry that Miss Wendt isn't setting you activities in each daily blog post; she is absolutely fine and will keep a little eye on what you're doing! Miss Brookes will be giving you your daily Maths, and Miss Wendt has already organised more weekly Spanish activities, so the types of activities you get each day will be the same as the last half term! 

Look out for the two other separate blog posts from Miss Brookes and I this morning - one with your weekly Reading challenge, and the other with your new Connected Curriculum activity choices! Our new topic is focused on Spain, with the big question, "Why is Spain such a popular holiday destination?". I hope you love the activities I've put on, I had a lot of fun putting it together and would quite like to try a few myself!

Right, quite a lot from me this morning to start this new half term!

For our new Connected Curriculum topic, we're going to be finding out a bit about Bullfighting. It used to be extremely popular in Spain, and still is in some parts. However, many people (both in Spain and around the world) think it is cruel and needs to be banned completely. I'd like you to research Bullfighting over the next couple of weeks, finding out some of the arguments for Bullfighting (which means people think it should be able to continue) and against Bullfighting (which means people think it should be stopped). Check out these links to help your research - I'll put them in each blog post over the next few days, I'm not expected you to look at these all in one go!

Good Morning from Miss Brookes!

I hope you all had a lovely week off and managed to enjoy some sunshine. I know we have now finished our Space unit, but did any of you watch the launch over the weekend? From next week, each week will focus on a topic (e.g. time or fractions etc.) However, this week - as our brains have had a week off - we're going to focus alternatively on the number of the day, and a fluent in 5.

Today's challenge is a number of the day. I don't expect you to answer all 10 questions (you can focus on 5, but if you want to do more it's up to you!) and I will post the answers at 1pm. Remember: when multiplying/dividing by 10/100/1000, use a place value chart - not the bus stop method.

I hope you have all had a relaxing half term holiday and are ready to continue with your home learning. It’s a strange way to start the final half term of the year but let’s see what happens over the next few weeks.

 

We are going to continue to learn Phase 3 sounds and begin to learn the Phase 4 tricky words.

At the beginning of the video, I am reading 4 of the tricky words from Phase 4. Can you watch the video and read them? Practise writing the tricky words on some paper.

I would like you to think about the beginning of the story and what might happen next?

Can you now think of an ending to the story?

 

These are the kinds of questions I am going to ask.

What do you think is going to happen in the story?

What do you think Superworm and the other bugs will do next?

Can you think of a good ending for the story?

You could start your answer by saying things like…

I think Superworm will…

The bugs will…

At the end of the story, Superworm will…

 

Rhyming challenge

Over previous weeks, we have looked at rhyming words…  Did you notice that there were LOTS of rhyming words in this story too?

Can you listen carefully and find the pairs of words that rhyme?

Hi Nursery, I am very excited about this terms topic… I wonder if you can guess what we will be learning about from these clues!

Feelers out… What’s about?

Look and listen, stop and stare… Minibeasts are everywhere!

 

That’s right, you guessed it! Our topic is MINIBEASTS!

You might like to have your very own Minibeast adventure and go on a MINIBEAST HUNT!

With your grown up, can you go into your garden or outside for a walk and look for some creepy crawlies! I wonder what sort of minibeasts you can find?

Attached below is a Minibeast Hunt Sheet, of lots of different minibeasts to look for.

Have lots of fun and don’t forget to take a photo or draw a picture of the minibeasts you find!

 

If you are feeling creative, why not have a go at creating a Minibeast yourself.

Have a look at the ideas below and see if you can create your very own Minibeast! We would love to see your minibeast, so dont forget to send a picture to us!

 

In this week’s story, ‘Superworm’ is helpful and likes to help his friends. Can you think of ways to be helpful to your family at home? What helpful deeds could you do? You could draw a picture or ask a grown up to make a list of all the helpful things you do!

Finally, you might like to listen to a story and sing some Minibeast songs.

Monday 1st June: Maths Daily Challenge

Good Morning Nursery!

Today we are going to be using our counting skills so let’s warm up by singing a counting song:

Your challenge today is to use the ‘I spy and count’ sheet to count and find the amount of each type of minibeast. Use the ‘I spy and count’ checklist to see which minibeasts you need to count.

Remember when you count, point to the minibeasts and say a number name for each one.

 

You could have a go at drawing the minibeasts and writing the numeral to show how many there are of each type next to it.

Use our superhero cape to help you recognise and copy the numeral.
