World Mental Health Day and More in 2AH!

Date: 10th Oct 2024 @ 12:43pm

World Mental Health Day

Today we have celebrated World Mental Health Day. We have taken some time throughout the day to discuss how this event links to the rights respecting school Article 24 and how our mental health and wellbeing is a priority. The children took part in activities such as mindfulness colouring, we read 'Find your Happy' by Emily Coxhead as part of 'read Manchester' and also had some independent mindful reading. The children recognised how it is important to share our feelings and what we can do to support our mental wellbeing.

This week in English we have started reading 'The Disgusting Sandwich' and have been practicing instruction writing for our own recipes. The children have been using time connectives, adjectives and conjunctions in their writing and I am so proud of how much they are expressing their ideas in this topic.

Please remember that we have pupil progress evening next Tuesday and Wednesday for families that have children across the key stages. If you have not yet booked your time slot, you can book an appointment using the online booking system through School Spider. You will need to login via our website by selecting ‘parent login’ on the top
bar of our site using the login you received via email or, via the School Spider app. If you are unable to login, please discuss with me on Friday and I can arrange your appointment.

Please also remember that the children's reading records are checked every day, the children should be reading every night at home and this should be logged in the reading record. The children's homework is due on a Friday when we also do our class spelling test.

I am extremely proud of how the children are working this term and look forward to the exploring, creating, reading and writing we will be doing next week.

Thank you for all of your support,

Miss Hindle.

World Mental Health Day

This morning Reception have been participating in activities all about World Mental Health Day!

As part of Manchester's Take 10 to Read initiative, we all listened to best selling author Sue Hendra reading some of her FABULOUS Supertato stories! We decided that we feel calm and happy when we read stories!

Next, we spent some time thinking about all the ways we can feel calm and happy.

Lori-Ann likes to have sleepovers with her Nanny!

Levi likes to spend time with his brother.

Amaal likes it when her Mummy gives her a hug.

RIley feels happy when his Mummy gives him a bedtime kiss

Whiffy's Stew

Date: 6th Oct 2024 @ 8:07pm

Good Afternoon,

This week, the children have been learning about the features of an instructional text. They have read instructions on How to make Whiffy Stew and then  enjoyed collecting the ingredients to make it from the school playground. They enjoyed getting messy and filling their cups with sloppy mud and water!

After that, they read the instructions and made the stew. They absolutely had a wonderful time and it was lovely to see them all laughing and smiling outdoors. it was a good job the sun stayed out too.

Year 6 are off on an exciting adventure this week...we are headed to Lake Windermere for our residential trip to Ghyllhead. We are so excited! We are looking forward to all the challenges and fun activities we will take part in. Have a sneak peak of some of the things we will get up to!

Music sessions with Miss Kent!

Date: 6th Oct 2024 @ 11:21am

On Thursday's we are very musical in 1AI!

We have singing assembly with Miss Kent and then every two weeks she comes into our class to do a music session with us. The week she isn't with us Mrs Iqbal tries to deliver it!!!

For the past few weeks we have been using our voices to think about tempo, listened and appraised the song 'What a wonderful world!' by Louise Armstrong and had a go at playing some musical instruments. We have also started to learn the names of these instruments and recognise what type of instrument they are - wooden, metal, string etc...

It's lots of fun on Thursday morning in our class!!!

Naughty Bus!

Date: 6th Oct 2024 @ 11:16am

Last week we finished off our writing unit all about Naughty Bus. Over the last 3 weeks we have learnt some vocabulary from the story, we read the story and created some actions/story map to help us retell the story. We sequenced the story and practiced writing sentences using capital letters and full stops correctly. Finally we wrote our very own versions of the story Naughty Bus to send off to the real life authors!

In provision we created our favourite part of the story using construction kits and wrote some sentences. In the writing area we wrote alternative versions of the story using book making equipment. In the creative area we designed our very own story maps using pictures and words from the story. In the funky fingers area we used the loose parts to create scenes from the story.

We have really enjoyed our first text and writing sessions in 1AI! Next unit is all about writing factfiles about elephants using the story 'You can't take an elephant on the bus!'

Physical Development Sports Day

  2. We danced and moved to the beat. ( Would you like to dance along too? https://youtu.be/Y9LLfv7yauM?si=Klx6c-dNLohIl9ZP )
  3. We listened to instructions to play a stop/go game.
  4. We travelled around the obstacle course in different ways.

Thank you so much to all of the adults who stayed and played with us. It was fabulous spending time with you all.

We can't wait!

This week in 2AH!

Date: 3rd Oct 2024 @ 11:24am

We have had a fantastic week in 2AH this week!

In English, we have started to look at the features of instruction texts and focusing on imperative 'bossy' verbs. The children have been excellent in collaborating during learning time to discuss and share their own instructions using the features that they have discussed. Do you have any recipe books or instruction manuals at home? Practice reading these with your child and ask them to point out the features that they notice.

I have been blown away this week by the children’s enthusiasm in their Maths learning. The children have been extending their knowledge of addition, adding three addends and independently using classroom resources to represent number sentences. It has been fantastic to see how the children are working with their peers to support each other in their learning and contributing so much to whole class learning.

In Geography this week, we explored hot and cold places around the world and how a countries distance from the equator determines if it will be hot or cold. The children used maps of the world to identify hot and cold places, used their knowledge to recognise the features of hot and cold places, and used reasoning to explain their knowledge of the worlds continents and oceans.

As we continue with our ‘healthy me’ topic in Science, the children found out about and described the basic needs of humans.  We discussed the difference between human wants vs needs, recognising the importance of water, food, and air to our survival.

Please remember to listen to your child read their home reading book each night, the children’s reading records are checked every day so please ensure to sign this with the date when you have listened to your child read.

The children also have this weeks homework in their bookbags, this is due each Friday. Please make sure that the children practice their spellings ready for their spelling test.

Goodnight Mr Tom

Physical Development Sports Day, Friday 4th October, 2024

Date: 1st Oct 2024 @ 8:07am

Here's a reminder of what is happening on Friday. We're so excited to welcome our parents and carers in to share our learning and some of the fun activities we like.

Geography Fieldwork and Provision areas in Year 1!

Date: 29th Sep 2024 @ 2:09pm

Last Monday we carried out some fieldwork for our geography learning. We made some binoculars to go on a local area walk around the school playground using a map to help us. We discussed the starting point and which route we will be taking to observe and look at all the things in our local area. Then back in class we labelled all the things we saw on a school map.

In Year 1 we have provision areas where we practice our skills using equipment, games and activities to help us. Last week we loved using the provision areas do help us with our reading, writing, phonics and maths skills. Some of our favourite areas have been writing/phonic area where we love creating books using paper and treasury tags! We also enjoy our reading area and love to look at the books for pleasure. We also enjoy using the funky fingers area to support our hand strength by doing lots of activities linked to the story or topic we are doing.

It's been another busy week in 1AI!!!

Exciting Learning in Year 3!

Date: 28th Sep 2024 @ 3:29pm

Year 3 have been very busy these last couple of weeks.

In maths, we have been exploring addition and subtraction. Can you remember the meaning of all of our new vocabulary? Addend, minuend, subtratend, equation, sum and difference? It was challenging to begin with, but we alll worked incredibly hard and continued to persevere until we felt confident.

In english, we have been reading the Stone Age boy. We have practised our inference skills, and next week will write a diary as if we have landed in the Stone Age - just like the boy did in the story.

In history, we explored what it would be like to be living in the Stone Age. We learnt what a hunter-gatherer was, and role-played being a hunter, gatherer and farmer in the playground.

We have also begun our gymnastics journey in PE, and learnt how to do a shoulder stand. We even learnt a trick to do with a beanbag and a hula hoop!

Attached is a copy of this week's homework and spellings.

Well done Reception!

Date: 27th Sep 2024 @ 4:53pm

We have had a wonderful first few weeks in Reception!

All of the children have settled into their new classes so well. They have been working extremely hard as we settle into our new routines.

Thank you so much for all of the support from parents bringing in book bags each day and helping with phonics homework each evening. Remember to ask the grown-ups during morning jobs if you have any questions about things you can do to help at home.

Next week we are going to be starting a brand new story! The story is call 'Incredible You!' Why not have a sneak peak below?

Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend,

The Ravensbury Reception Team.

we are becoming confident, independent learners!

Date: 23rd Sep 2024 @ 12:27pm

Hello,

We cannot believe how fast the school weeks are going. it is lovely to see the children becoming more and more confident as the days go by. This week there has been a real focus on the children using the classroom provision to support their independent learning.

In maths, the children have used concrete objects to make groups of 10. They were asked to find as many different ways of representing 10 and they were encouraged to work as part of The Ant Team. it was lovely to see them talking to each other and helping each other with their learning. Look at their hard work.

1AI participating in our Inclusive Sport's Day

Date: 22nd Sep 2024 @ 4:12pm

Last Wednesday we had a fantastic morning participating in our first Inclusive Sport's Day at Ravensbury. The different zones had some alternative activities that children participated in. The activities included trampolining, bowling, wheelchair racing, seated volleyball, blind-folded ball throw and standing or seated soft axe throwing.

It was an amazing experience and the children got stuck into all the activities with great enthusiasm!

LAUNCH - What is in our local area?

Date: 22nd Sep 2024 @ 1:38pm

This week 1HB launched our new topic 'What is in our local area?' We went to explore the boundaries of our school from the outskirts of our playground. We enjoyed looking at the houses and sharing where we live with our friends! We were also excited to talk about our experiences of visiting the local chip shop and of course the sweet shop! We learned about how Clayton is the town where we live and that Clayton is a town in the city of Manchester. Next week we will exploring maps of our local area as well as using them to plan and follow routes.

Quarry Bank Mill

Date: 20th Sep 2024 @ 1:51pm

At Quarry Bank Mill, Year 5  had the chance to step back in time and experience life as it was during the Victorian era. The mill, built in 1784, played a huge role in Britain's Industrial Revolution, and we explored both the mill itself and the conditions people worked in.

We learned about the tough jobs children and adults had to do in the mill. Some of us tried working the machines like a “scavenger,” crawling under the spinning machines to collect cotton, a task often done by children. Others took on the role of emptying the chamber pots and making the beds. It was intense and gave us a glimpse into the dangerous working conditions faced by Victorian workers.

In the Apprentice House, we discovered how the child workers lived. Their daily routines were harsh – long hours, little food, and strict discipline. But the visit also taught us about the resilience and courage of the workers who lived through it.

This experience helped us understand not just the jobs, but the hard, demanding life that people endured during the Victorian period, making us grateful for the advances in workers' rights today!

Week 3 in 2AH!

Date: 19th Sep 2024 @ 10:47am

We have had an excellent week in 2AH!

The children are settling into their new classroom now and have been showing lots of interest towards what we have been learning in class.

In English, we have been discussing adjectives and conjunctions as we prepare to write our character descriptions for Whiffy Wilson next week. The pupils have been great at discussing adjectives and applying these to their writing.

We have also been discussing more about different continents in our Geography topic 'What would we see if we travelled from Pole to Pole?'. The children enjoyed looking on Google Earth where we compared the size of different continents and looked at images to see how these looked different to where we live. If you would like to explore with your child just click the link https://earth.google.com

In RE our current enquiry question is 'Who is a Muslim and what do they believe?'. This week we have discussed the Prophet Muhammad and how the Islamic faith teaches Muslims to care for all creatures big and small. We talked about how we can protect small creatures and enjoyed making a 'bug hotel' which we will be keeping an eye on outside our classroom.

On Wednesday, the children took part in the schools inclusive sports day where they all had a lot of fun. I am so impressed with the feedback from other teachers in the school about how the children shown their team work and determination.

Thank you for such an amazing week 2AH and to all of the parents for your ongoing support.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Hindle and Mrs Cooper.

Great start in the EAL room!

Date: 18th Sep 2024 @ 3:26pm

It has been brilliant getting to know all the children at our school who speak another language at home - there are so many different languages in our school! I have counted more than 20 so far.

I have (nearly) learnt all the names (give me until half term!) and many things that the children like and don't like. They definitely like playing games to help with their learning!

Year 6 have been learning about past tense verbs (regular and irregular, was/were, spelling rules) to be able to write a diary from a character's point of view.

Year 5 have been working on which speech verbs to choose when writing about Oliver Twist.

Year 3 and 4 have been working on understand maths words.

Year 2 have been asking questions correctly, giving opinions and taking turns.

It has been a busy week in Year 2!

Date: 15th Sep 2024 @ 5:59pm

Hello,

Well all we can say is that it has been a busy week in year 2 this week. The children have settled in well and are becoming more and more confident at working independently, which is lovely to see. The children have enjoyed joining in with Mrs's Hughes Celebration assembly this week and were particularly excited when they worked with Miss Kent during singing Assembly. Our children are so talented at singing and performing and it is lovely to see they come alive when they sing and dance.

This week was the launch to our new Geography topic ' What will we see when we travel from Pole to Pole' The children made passports, created suitcase lists and boarding passes which they really enjoyed. Some of the children would make great travel agents! This week they will be using globes, maps and Atlases to locate the Continents and Oceans of the world. If would like to help them further have a look at the knowledge organiser below to see the skills, knowledge and new vocabulary that they will be learning.

Travelling from pole to pole (1).jpg

They have a fantastic week and have made all the staff very proud. We know that they will continue to work hard next week too.

Thanks for all your support
