Portland Basin

Date: 30th Mar 2025 @ 12:21pm

This term the children have been learning about Queen Victoria and as part of the learning the children visited Portland basin in Ashton to find out what is was like to live in Victorian times. During the day, the children got to explore a victorian town, dress up in Victorian clothing, find out what it was like to learn in a victorian school, explore victorian artefacts and what it was like to work in as a child in victorian times.

The children were shown how to cook and clean. They were told not to give eye contact ad keep their heads down when an adult was speaking to them. Some of the children were very scared.

They experienced what it was like to work in the mills and in the coal mines. All the children worked hard because they didn't want to a nail in their ears for poor work!

They looked closely at artefacts. They described them and then had a go at working out what they were and what they were used for.
