Hello everyone!
A massive well done to: Faith, Navaeh , Michelle , Maddison, Zarek , Haya and Naomi who all correctly identified the flag was Italy and its capital city, Rome. There were lots of landmarks and foods too - the leaning tower of Pisa and pasta were just two of the suggestions.
5 house points to you all when we get back to school !
How about this flag ? Can you name the country, capital and any famous people who come from this country? Email us on : Ealhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk if you know the answer. Good luck !

Good Morning Reception!!
Let’s start today’s phonic activity by joining in with a new song called the oo sound song. Click the video at the bottom of the blog.
I know after reading some of your emails and watching your videos that it is a little bit confusing when thinking about the way we say words with the long and short oo sound.
Watch my video at the bottom of the blog where I am explaining how to read words with the long and short oo sounds.
Can you read these words with the long and short oo sounds? How many can you read? Ask a grown up to time you.
Today’s practise and apply activities are all about the long and short ‘oo’ sound. Choose 1, 2, 3 or all 4 activities. Which one will you choose?
Can you sort out the words into the correct box in the table?
Play long oo and short oo treasure hunt. Cut up or write the words and hide them in a space inside or outside. Find a word and read it and put it in the right container labelled short oo or long oo.
Play the short and long ‘oo’ roll and read game.
Choose the long and short sound stories. Can you read them and make a list of all the words with the short or long ‘oo’ sounds?
Don’t forget to send in your photos/work to… receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Good morning Year 5!
Well, the Hodges house have been awake for a VERY long time, because we have a very excited 8 year old...it's Livvi's birthday today! She's had a lovely morning of opening some presents, and we're about to watch a surprise video of lots of her friends wishing her a 'Happy Birthday', since she can't see them in person! I managed to get the cake finished - the buttercream colour was darker than I was hoping for, but Livvi loves it and I'm reminding myself that that's what matters! I've attached a photo for you to see!
Let us know what you get up to today, and remember to email us your learning!

Hello from Miss Wendt!
I think the first thing to say today is Happy Birthday Livvi! I can imagine the excitement in the Hodges household this morning, especially looking at that wonderful cake!
Here are today's fluent in five questions:-
Como esta el clima?
As promised, today we are going to learn some new Spanish vocabulary - all about the weather!
What do you think the question above means?
Here is a short video which will introduce the vocabulary words and phrases. I will be back later with an activity for you to complete!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6U8NgZXztc
Here are the fluent in five answers!
I've also added a document for you to download at home. It's a chatterbox (sometimes called a fortune teller!) to help you remember the different ways we can talk about the weather in Spanish!

Good Morning Year 5 from Miss Brookes!
Happy Birthday Livvi! I hope you have the fabulous day that you deserve That cake looks amazing - you should be very proud of yourself Mrs Hodges (and Mr Hodges for the baking part!)
This weekend we're going to have a 'family bake off.' My Dad is going to choose a picture of a cake from the internet, and then - with no recipe - my mum and I, and my sister and her step-daughter, are going to compete to see who can make the best version of that cake! I will make sure to send pictures on Monday so you can help judge the winner.
Yesterday's GVP work was amazing - I received some fantastic emails, so I've attached some to the blog post. They show some brilliant phrases for cohesion. Well done Akin, Auryn and Jennifer!
Now, onto today's learning.
Today's GVP is focused on punctuation, and more importantly, apostrophes. This is something a lot of us use incorrectly at times, which is why we're looking at it today.
https://www.showme.com/sh?h=jRLoHTM
Check back later, as I am going to attach the answers to today's blog post.
So far in these past three weeks, we have looked at all of our year 5 objectives and recapped some of our year 4 objectives. Please email me and let me know which objectives you found the most challenging, or want to practice more, and then I can include them in next weeks videos.

Thursday 14th May: Phonics - Rhyme
Date: 14th May 2020 @ 6:31am
Good Morning!
This week we have been learning about rhyme. Why don't you listen and join in some of your favourite rhymes by clicking on the link below:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/curations/nursery-rhymes
I have really enjoyed looking at the rhyming story ‘Oi Frog’, I hope you have too!
Now today we are going to look another rhyming book called ‘Oi Cat’.
You can listen to ‘Oi cat’ by clicking on the link below. When you are listening to the story see is you can hear rhyming pairs of words. You may even be able to help make a rhyming string too!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7G2CNKhDbA
Did you hear lots of rhyming words in the story? Did you help to make a rhyming string?
Fantastic!
For today’s challenge, you are going to create rhyming strings by playing a game called:
Cat in a hat: A list with a twist!
What you’ll need: paper, pen
What to do:
1. On a big sheet of paper, write the word cat. Then underneath write the rhyming sound all down the page (_at).
2. Adults: Ask your child to come up with as many rhyming words as they can. Quite simply, they have to add a letter to the beginning of the word. Don’t worry if it’s a real word or not!
3. Take turns to come up with silly sentences based on the rhymes. Can you make each other laugh?
Play the game again for:
Dog on a log: A list with a twist!
Repeat the game as above, making another list of words that rhyme with the word dog.
We would love to see your rhyming string so make sure you send pictures of your learning to: nurseryhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk
I hope you have fun creating your rhyming strings!
Have a great day!
Date: 14th May 2020 @ 6:24am
Let’s get started today by singing the Days of the week!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtQcnZ2JWsY
Yesterday you listened to the story of the ‘Very Hungry Caterpillar’. If you missed it then take a look using the link below.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75NQK-Sm1YY
You then used pictures from the story to talk about the sequence of events, using language: first, then, next, after and finally.
Think about the events of the story. Can you remember the order of fruits and food the caterpillar ate? Use the picture cards below to help you.
Talk through the pictures with your grown up and tell them the sequence of what the caterpillar ate.
Today’s challenge is to make your own lift the flap Hungry Caterpillar so you can talk through the sequence of what the caterpillar ate. Take a look at the picture below for an idea of what you will be making!
Ask an adult to help you to prepare the caterpillar.
- Fold a piece of paper and draw 8 circles, starting at the fold.
- Cut out the circles (Remember not to cut along the fold, otherwise the flaps won’t lift!) You might like to colour and draw a face on the first circle (this can just be a flat circle – no flap needed!)
- Next stick the circles on to a long strip of paper, or place them in order. Starting with the head, followed by all the other lift up circles.
- Ask your grown up to write the days on the top of each flap, starting with Monday to Sunday.
- Now use the picture cards below to see the order of what the caterpillar ate, starting with 1 apple.
- Lift up the flap and under each day draw what the caterpillar ate. So under Monday you will need to draw 1 apple, under Tuesday 2 pears and so on.
- You might like to add some colour to your caterpillar and foods.
AMAZING!
Once you have completed drawing the pictures and have coloured your caterpillar, use your caterpillar to tell your grown up the sequence of what he ate by lifting up each flap in turn.
I hope you enjoy creating your caterpillar. We would love to see your work so send your pictures to nurseryhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk
Have a great day!

Hello everybody,
It has been lovely to see photographs of the children's learning and we are very grateful for all the parents who have taken the time to send photographs in to celebrate their child's work.It is really important that you continue to learn at home so that learning is easier when you come back to school. Try your very hardest to focus and concentrate and remember it is ok if you find learning hard some days as long as you 'have a go' and try your best.
We hope you are all ok and are ready for more learning today. Today we are going to focus on using the bar model strategy to solve subtracttion problems.
Click on this link to watch how to use this method to solve word problems
http://www.showme.com/sh?h=vGHnAjg
We hope you understand how to use this method. Now have a go at the following challenges.
Challenge 1
Read the problems. Write the subtraction sentence and draw the bar model to solve the problem.
1. There were 7 snakes under the log and 5 slithered away. How many snales are under the log?
2. There are 9 birds in the tree and 4 flew away. How many birds are on the tree?
3. There are 6 biscuits in the box and the children ate 2. How many biscuits are left?
4. There are 8 cakes in the tin and 3 are taken away to sell at the school fair. How many cakes were left in the tin?
5. There were 3 flowers in the garden and all the flowers were picked by the children. How many were left?
Challenge 2- Subtraction from 10
Read the problems. Write the subtraction sentence and draw the bar model to solve the problem.
1. 10 oranges on the tree and 4 were picked by the children. How many were left?
2. There were 10 cars in the garage and 2 cars drove away. How many were left?
3. There were 10 paintbrushes in the pot and 1 was used to paint a picture. How many were left?
4. 10 books on the book shelf and 7 were removed ready to read the following day. How many were left?
5.There were 10 carrots in the field and the naughty rabbit ate 5. How many are left?
Challenge 3
Write the subtaction and addition sentence to match the bar model and then solve the problem
1. 10

10-9= 9+ ------= 10
2. 10
5 |
3. 10

Well we have a response from Haya! Are you ready?
She has selected...
Examine the mirror
You warily walk towards the mirror noting as you get closer the sheer size of it. It has to be the largest mirror you’ve ever seen, twice your height and four times your width at least.
The ornate golden frame looks chipped and worn and you wipe the surface with your hand removing dust and cobwebs. Your reflection looks back at you eerily, then smiles.
Your reflection’s hand snakes out and pulls you closer to the mirror. You try to resist but your opposite is much stronger. It pulls you into the frame and you feel a sucking sensation as you are pulled into the mirror itself. A sudden snap cracks and then you are face to face with your reflection once more, only this time you have switched places.
You try to grab the mirror creature but your hand smacks solidly against the glass, you are trapped inside the mirror!
Your reflection smiles, waves and strolls away. You are stuck, forever!
ARRGGGHHH!! Nooo!
How spooky was that? It made a shiver go right down my spine just imagining that happening to me!
Not to worry we will go back to the hall and choose another path to follow to find the ruby heart! We are now left with two choices...

Hello,
Well done to Maddison and Faith who both knew that yesterday's flag was of Pakistan - capital of Islamabad - and that you can say hello by saying Asalaam-walaikum or Salam.
Well done to Heer too who had also e-mailed us to tell us about last Friday's flag being the Union Jack and also telling us all about VA day.
5 house points to all of them when we go back!
Today's quiz
What country does this flag belong to? What is the capital? Can you name a famous landmark anywhere in this country and name a food that is eaten there?

Good morning everyone,
I'm sorry I didn't post a wellbeing challenge yesterday but I was in school! I meant to do it the night before but then forgot and had an early night ready for school yesterday, oops! Sorry about that but I'm back today and have a choice of 2 for you to do to make up for it.
You've been very creative lately (please see the past challenges below!) so I'm giving you something a bit different today. One is i you would like to relax and one is if you would like to have a bit of fun.
The first challenge is to do Jason Manford's comedy kids quiz at 1.30pm today, available from the following YouTube link. If you can't do it at 1.30 then it will be up for a few days after. and if you want more then have a look on his YouTube channel for past quizzes! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhVLZjO7Tms
The second challenge is also at 1.30pm although I think you can watch it later if you're not free then! The National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth are doing Turtle Time! A live video of their Green Sea Turtle who is called Friday. I always find watching sea animals very relaxing so you could watch it, learn some facts about turtles and then have a go at drawing the turtle. Ths live video will be on facebook so you'll have to ask an adult to log in to their account if they have one. https://www.facebook.com/NationalMarineAquarium/live/
Please e-mail me to let me know how you did in the quiz or any facts or pictures you have of the turtle! EALhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk
Past Challenges
I've been blown away by the effort you've gone to with these challenges (people have even dressed up!) and every time I get emails with pictures of your challenges it really cheers me up so thank you! Here are some pictures I've received over the last couple of days, thanks to everyone who's sent me one!
The Boy at the Back of the Class Chapter 19

Good morning year 6, you are going to be on the edge of your seat sharing chapter 19 today!
https://www.showme.com/sh?h=wReiNgu
Wasn't it exciting! The narrator really has shown how badly they want to get their letter to the Queen.
Questions
Why was it so busy at the palace when they arrived?
How were the crowd feeling? Use evidence from the text to support your answer.
Find and Copy two words on page 210 which suggests the policemen were approaching the narrator and standing over him.

Hello,
Well you must have all stopped singing because the Sun is out today!!!!!! I have been out this morning walking in the glorious sunshine and feel ready for a day of work. I hope you are too!
Today and for the rest of the week we are going to focus on subtraction. Today is going to give you an opportunity to recap on previous learning and then use this knowledge to learn something new. So let's recap on what we have been learning so far.
We have read and solved subtaction problems using concrete objects, crossing amounts out and using a number line.
Challenge 1- Using a number line to subtract amounts
Remember that when we subtract amounts from each other the number gets smaller and we count back on a number line to solve the problem.
Have a look at these problems
Challenge 2
Now have a go at subtracting from 10 using a number line. Can you use your knowledge of number pairs to help you ? Please remeber to write your numbers correctly!
Now time for something new!
Challenge 3- Subtraction using the bar method
We use are knowledge of addition to help us solve subtraction problems.
Let's have a look at the first question!
9-8= we might say that as 9 take away 8 equals.
We could also say that we know that the total amount is 9. We know that 8 is taken away.
What do I need to add to 8 to make 9 and draw it to help you.
Challenge 4- subtraction from 10 using the bar method
Have a go at writing the bars to match the subtraction
1. 10-5= 2. 10-7= 3.10-3= 4.10-4= 5.10-1= 6. 10-2=
Happy learning!

Story Adventure The House on Haunted Hill Part 7
Date: 13th May 2020 @ 9:38am
Good morning year 6. The sun is shining on us but definitely not on the Haunted House! I hope you are ready to climb the stairs and see what awaits us.
Here goes...
At the top of the cellar stairs is a trap door, you open it and climb through into a hall. It is gloomy and just as dusty as the cellar but not as musty.
The hallway is dim but the bright moonlight offers enough visibility. Thick cobwebs hang everywhere and the house is cold, really cold. You see a door to your right, a large dusty mirror to your left and a large spiral staircase. Do you:
Open the door
Climb the stairs
Examine the mirror
Well now there are 3 options to choose from!
Who will be the first to choose where we should go next? I can't wait to see what will happen next!
Wednesday sentence of the day and phonics
Date: 13th May 2020 @ 9:29am
Good Morning! We had lots of pictures of your learning in yesterday, it’s great to see you all so busy. Remember that you can still go on Lexia and active learn so that you can practice your reading skills every day.
Sentence of the day
Here are the answers to yesterday’s sentence of the day. If you saw that the full stops were missing you were correct! Well done! The sentence should have looked like this…
The young boy planted a miniscule seed in the gritty soil. Every day he splashed the seed with water, but it didn’t grow. He waited and waited and one day out from the dark soil sprouted a little green stem.
Here is today’s sentence. What needs altering today?
joe loves gardening when the weather gets warmer. last sunday he purchased some tiny round seeds from the shop. when he got home he found a large shiny pot and planted the seeds deep into the soggy brown mud.
Phonics
Let’s start todays phonics by recapping those initial blends that you looked at yesterday.
bl pl gl cl fl
Write some words out to match each blend, for example, blue, plane, glove, clown, flowers; now place them on the floor. Ask your grown up to play some music, when the music stops pick up a word and read it out loud. If you read the word correctly you can keep it, if not you have to put it back down.
Today you are going to be looking at end blends. End blends are blends that come at the end of a word. Watch the youtube video to find out more.
Here are our blends today…
nk st nd mp ft
Here are your three challenges
Challenge one – Make a hopscotch using the different words you saw in the video. You can do this with chalks outside or on pieces of paper and lie them on the floor.
Challenge two – Play a game of hopscotch, when you land on the word, read it. If you want it to be a competition, play with a family member and pick the words up as you land on them. The person with the most words is the winner.
Challenge three – Can you use any of the words to make sentences?
Hope you have a lovely day J

The Snail and the Whale Movable Craft
Date: 13th May 2020 @ 9:27am
Good Morning Reception!
Have you been enjoying ‘The Snail and the Whale’ story this week? Today we are going to be making a moveable craft using paper plates linked to this exciting tale! Take a look at what you will be making below…
Isn’t it fantastic?!
You will need:
Paper plate
2 Shades of blue paint/pens/pencils
Lollipop stick
Felt tip pens
Different coloured card (ideally white/blue/grey)
Scissors
Sellotape
Instructions:
Begin by painting/colouring in your paper plate in two shades of blue – if you don’t have blue you could add a bit of white/yellow to what you have and recreate the scene where the whale gets stuck on the beach!
If you are painting, while it’s drying you can begin to create the snail and the whale! On a piece of card, draw a picture of the two friends and colour them in! It’s better to use card over paper as it will stand up better when you play with your paper plate. Attach a lollipop stick to it using Sellotape.
Cut a sun shape out of yellow card and glue this onto your paper plate. Then carefully cut a line along the bottom of the paper plate… this should go from one side to the other but not go to the actual edge or you’ll cut the bottom off the paper plate.
Pop your lollipop stick through the hole and your snail and the whale craft is ready to be played with!
Enjoy! I can’t wait to see your creations! J
Date: 13th May 2020 @ 9:22am
Good Morning Reception!
Happy Wednesday J We are halfway through the week!
Let’s warm up for our maths learning today by listening to maths songs and completing our fluent-in-five questions below…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0Ajq682yrA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MVzXKfr6e8&t=3s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TgLtF3PMOc&t=17s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGetqbqDVaA
Today in our maths learning we are continuing to add more and take away using ‘first, then and now’ mathematical stories. Please refer to yesterday’s maths blog if you missed it!
We use the ‘first, then and now’ structure to create mathematical stories in contexts children can relate to. Placing a calculation into addition stories can help children to see the calculation in a meaningful context. Children are able to visualise the addition calculation as they tell the addition story.
Take a look at all of these superstars below who completed their ‘First, then, and now’ addition stories yesterday! Well done J
Today we are going to be looking at mathematical stories to help us subtract/take-away. Presenting subtraction in this way can help young children to visualise the calculation and understand that some are being taken away.
Take a look at the first question below!
Count the frogs in the ‘first’ column… how many are there altogether? Write the answer in the box below (5).
Then count the frog that has jumped from the log in the ‘then’ column… write this in the box below (1.)
In the ‘now’ box, you should be able to count how many frogs are left. Write this underneath (4.)
Well done! The answer to this 'first, then and now' question is 5 – 1 = 4!
I have attached some more questions in the link below… enjoy! How many can you work out? J
Date: 13th May 2020 @ 8:58am
Hello Year 5!
Did you check out the YouTube link I posted yesterday about the "Space Talk" with Tim Peake? If you've learnt anything new, remember to email and tell us about it!
I'm busy getting ready for Livvi's birthday tomorrow, and began making her cake last night - I've made fondant shaped horses so far (and Jon's made the chocolate cakes!), but I've looked at them this morning and I'm hoping they don't crack as I put them on the cake this evening. I'll show you the end result tomorrow!

Good morning from Mrs Hodges!
Two activities from me today. Firstly, our Sentence of the Day:
https://www.showme.com/sh?h=j0V1RQW
Then I'd like you to have a look at the attached Writing activity. Using the picture, have a look at the "Question Time" section to get you exploring what you can see more. Then I'd like you to do the "Sentence Challenge", where you need to add adverbs to the sentences to show how the verbs are done in each sentence. One has been given to you already as an example. If you want an extra challenge, can you add an -ed, -ly or -ing opener to each sentence too?
Good afternoon!
How did you get on with today's sentence? Click the link below to see my purple pen corrections!

Hello for MIss Wendt!
Good morning everyone! Before our fluent in five questions, I want to share some excellent links for you to get help with fractions. I had a lovely email yesterday from Maddison who is working very hard on her home learning. She wanted a reminder of the different ways we use fractions.
Here are some really good tutorials. There are many to look at, so please don't watch them all at once! But they are very helpful and give a step-by-step guide to a range of ways to calculate fractions. I have also included the Y3/4 links as you might want a reminder of past skills.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYtMn2KzMTw&list=PLQqF8sn28L9wBDTntZEccZohH-JPun2eU This is the Y3/4 link - have a look at this one first for a refresher
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQqF8sn28L9xBmQclRrb8YjcM-pzxHjfk And this is the Y5/6 link.
Definitely worth looking at Y5 - you can select the area of fractions learning you are unsure about (adding fractions, equivalent fractions, ordering fractions) and work through the tutorial.
Here is today's fluent in five. I'll be back later with the answers!
And here are the answers! Did anyone have a look at the fractions links today?

Good Morning Year 5 from Miss Brookes!
The work that I have seen from all your emails this week so far, is amazing! Well done everyone.
Today's GVP is all about phrases for cohesion. See if you can work out what 'cohesion' means before you look at the video.

Enjoy!
Date: 13th May 2020 @ 8:22am
Good Morning Reception!!
This week we have listened to a new story called ‘The Snail and the Whale.’ If you haven’t listened to it look on Monday’s blog.
Today I want you to look at the two main characters in the story: the snail and the whale. What words would you use to describe them? Tell your grown up your ideas…Remember to talk in full sentences about the characters.
For example,
The snail has a hard shell on his back.
The whale has a huge body that is white and dark blue.
Your challenge today is to cut up the words on the sheet and try to make a sentence from the story. If you don’t have a printer write the words on scraps of paper. When you have made the sentence stick it on a piece a paper and draw a picture about the sentence. This will show that you have understood what you have read!
There are two sentences that you must work out. Grown ups the answers are on the third sheet for you to check.
Don’t forget to send in your photos/work to receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk
Date: 13th May 2020 @ 8:11am
Good Morning Reception!!
Let’s start today’s phonic activity by revising the sounds you have learnt so far using the flashcard game below:
https://new.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources/phase/2/flashcards-time-challenge
Pick individual phonemes section and click all the sounds that we have learnt so far from Phase 2 and 3.
Today we are going to learn a new sound but it’s a little bit confusing because it looks the same as the one from Monday!!! It’s called the short ‘oo’ sound. Think of the word foot when you are saying the short ‘oo’ sound. Look at the words on the picture, can you read them to your grown up…?
Watch today’s video at the bottom of the blog where I am explaining all about the short ‘oo’ sound.
Today’s practise and apply activities are:

Today we are going to continue our work on rhyme and create some rhyming strings.
Your challenge today is to look at the pictures below (snake/cake, fox/box, rat/hat, dog/frog, frog/log, fleas/keys). Say the rhyming pair, then think of another word that rhymes to make a rhyming string.
For example:
mole, pole, hole
mule, stool, pool

For the rest of this week we are going to continue our work on sequencing familiar events.
To help us do this we are going to look at the book ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’.
You can listen to the story by clicking on the link below:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75NQK-Sm1YY
After you have listened to the story, talk with your grown up about the sequence of events. What happened first, then, next, after, at the end?
Your challenge today is to look closely at the picture cards below. Can you describe each picture, then talk about the sequence of events from the story? What happens first, next, after, at the end? (Be careful, the pictures are muddled up!)
Make sure you are using good sentences to talk about the sequence and events.
Have a great day!
Story Adventure The House on Haunted Hill Part 6
Date: 12th May 2020 @ 2:38pm
Well Maddison beat everyone to it once again! That's three times in a row-come on the rest of year 6. Maddison wants us to 'Open the Filthy Cupboard' so that is what we shall do.
You open the cupboard and peer inside, nothing but dust and large, thick cobwebs. You go to close it and see something glinting in the corner underneath a thick layer of grime.
You reach for it and pull free a small golden key. Happy with your find, you pocket it and climb the stairs to the house.
Climb stairs
Wow we have a key! Well done Maddison; a good choice.
Tomorrow we will begin with climbing the stairs!
Date: 12th May 2020 @ 12:41pm
Hello everyone !
Have you been singing and making it rain? if so, STOP we need the sunshine to return. Today we aare going to focus on writing the names of numbers. It is a tricky thing to do but something we all need to be able to do in readiness for year two. It is really important that we can write the number manes to twenty so that is what we are going to practice today.

Challenge 2- Shout a number
Ask a family member to shout a number name between 0-20. Then write the number as a numeral then as a word.
e.g. The adult shouts 18 ,so you write 18 and eighteen.
