Sports Day Fun

Date: 11th Oct 2023 @ 7:11pm

We were blown away with the support we received last Friday for our 'Sports Day Meet & Greet'. The children were amazing, as always, and there were so many positive comments from the adults who joined us. We're so happy you can see the amount of progress the children have made settling in at Ravensbury.
Each key worker group rotated around the activities and had lots of fun moving, dancing, singing, playing games and making hand prints.
Here are some of the photos 😃

Week 5 in 5HC

Date: 8th Oct 2023 @ 10:16pm

Another busy week finished off!

In English, we have started a new unit about formal reports. We looked at (a simplified version of) Ravensbury's last ofsted report to understand some of the formal language we come across in reports. We also enjoyed a little role play as if we were in a factory which was being inspected.

In maths, we have finished our units on place value. The children have really worked hard to cement their understanding of tenths and hundredths in decimals and the value of different digits in decimal numbers.

5HC seem to really enjoy their dance lessons this half term too - we are working hard on developing a dance to reflect movements you might find in a factory.

For golden time this week, we got out lots and lots of lego! The children were free to build whatever they wanted but if they were lacking inspiration, I set them four challenges - build an animal, build something that flies, build a container but in only one colour and build the tallest tower. There were some brilliant ideas, I've included some photos below.

Learning in 5JB

Date: 8th Oct 2023 @ 7:02pm

The children have been very busy with their learning so far this year! Here are some of our highlights so far this term!

  • Quarry Bank Mill:  Year 5 had a wonderful time on our trip to Quarry Bank Mill. The children loved learning about how the mill was used in Victorian times and finding our about the lives of the children who worked there. They visited the Victorian school house and living quarters, tried some of the different jobs and saw the noisy machinery in action!
  • In Maths we have been learning about Place Value, including with decimal numbers.
  • In Reading the children really enjoyed our text study of Oliver Twist, especially finding out about the different charcters! They used their understanding of the text to create some wonderful character descriptions in their Writing Books!
  • We are continuing to discover more about the Victorians in our Connected Curriculum lessons, and have enjoyed finding out and creating a timeline of the main events of the Victorian era.
  • In Science, we are continuing our work on Forces. The class really enjoyed discussing, predicting and exploring the effect of gravity on different objects!
  • We have had a visitor in school to discuss Online Safety.
  • Finally, everyone has worked very hard on practicing their handwriting and presentation in their new Year 5 books.

This week, we look forawrd to some exciting additional sessions including Art, Black History Month workshops and Freestyle Football... it will be another busy and exciting week in Year 5!

Useful Information for 5JB

Date: 8th Oct 2023 @ 6:43pm

Welcome to a new year in 5JB!

The children have been working hard to get used to our new routines and timetables - here's some useful information for our school week in 5JB:

  • PE days are Tuesday and Thursday. Please make sure children arrive in school in correct PE kit (black bottoms and plain white top, school jumper or plain black PE sweatshirt, sensible sports trainers, hair tied back and earrings removed).
  • Bookbags should be brought in everyday and reading logs are checked on a Wednesday and Friday. Please support your child with their daily reading and sign their Reading Record each time.
  • Homework is sent out and handed in on Fridays.
  • Our weekly spelling test will take place each Thursday.

Beware Evil Veggies are on the loose!!!

Date: 8th Oct 2023 @ 5:00pm

What a week this has been! We discovered some vegetables that were trapped in a brown sack which mysteriously came to our classroom on Monday. In the sack we found some vegtables that were trapped along with a letter. We had to describe which evil character would do such a thing! We designed our own evil vegetables, described them thinking of adjectives to describe their appearance and personality.

A second letter came the next day thanking us for describing the evil vegetables really well. We were left with the story 'Supertato' to read and learn all about the nasty character called the 'Evil Pea!' Miss Riley and Reception children came to warn us that something evil has been in their class doing lots of nasty things. This thing has ripped a sound mat! Broken some toys and scrunched up some children's work! We decided to warn everyone and write some Wanted posters describing the Evil Pea's appearance and personality.

On Friday during Golden Time we decided that we needed to make some Evil Pea traps just in case this awful vegetable came back!

Wow! What a week of learning in our writing sessions!!!

Rainbow Fruit Kebabs

Date: 8th Oct 2023 @ 4:15pm

Good Afternoon!

This week in English we have continued to learn how to read, follow and write instructions. You will be pleased to know that this week the food we made wasn't disgusting and we could eat it. The children used their knowledge of year 2 Common exception words and phonic sounds to read words and sentences. They also learned alot of new vocabulary too! Have a look at the kebabs they made! They looked delicious and were yummy! The children also selected a healthy dipping sauce, their favourite was sticky honey!

IMG_0869.jpg  IMG_0836.jpg   IMG_0845.jpg   IMG_0847.jpg  IMG_0875.jpg IMG_0853.jpg   IMG_0851.jpgIMG_0881.jpg  IMG_0871.jpg IMG_0842.jpg    IMG_0858.jpg  IMG_0859.jpg  IMG_0888.jpg  IMG_0839.jpg

As you can see they had lots of fun!

They have worked hard to learn lots of adjectives to describe the fruit and here are some of the sentences they said and then wrote to describe the kebabs.

Freshly picked, juicy apples         juicy, seedless grapes    plum, tasty strawberries     sticky-sweet honey     tangy, juicy oranges

They are gooing to have a go at writing their instructions independently on Monday. We can't wait to read their work!

We hope you have a lovely time talking to the children about their learning. See you on Monday !

4RJ Week 5

Date: 6th Oct 2023 @ 6:27pm

What a week for us. We have been super scientists this week, exploring the effects of tooth decay. We are conducting an observation over time to look at the effects of different liquids on eggshells. The reason we are doing this is because egg shells are similar to the enemael of our teeth. So far, we have observed the shells for two days. In those two days, we have seen that the orange juice seems to have had the greatest effect on the egg shells The shells which are in orange juice look like they have begun to bubble, and the colour has changed a lot.

Faizan says that the egg that was in the orange seems to 'have veins.'

Jahmai says that the colour of the egg that is in the cola has gone darker.

Aayan I says that the eggs in the water, and the egg in the milk have not changed at all.

Noah says that we might still be able to eat egg that's in the water because we sometimes boil eggs in water.

We're excted to see what happens over the weekend and what changes there might be on Monday morning, so check back next week to see picture of our experiment and all of our results.

Homework has been sent out today, and next Friday we will test our 5 and 10 times tables and some more spellings.

Have a great weekend.

Week 5 in 4AK

Date: 6th Oct 2023 @ 4:06pm

We have had a brilliant week in 4AK!

We have been super scientists this week, exploring the effects of tooth decay. We are conducting an observation over time to look at the effects of different liquids on eggshells. The reason we are doing this is because egg shells are similar to the enemael of our teeth. So far, we have observed the shells for two days. In those two days, we have seen that the orange juice seems to have had the greatest effect on the egg shells, the surface of the shells see, to have began to bubble, and the colour has changed a lot. We will continue to observe this next week and we will share our results next week. In swimming, we have all grown in confidence and learnt to float on our back and stomachs this week!

We finished off our week with making frienship bracelets in golden time!

Homowork has been sent out and next week we will be focussing on 5x and 10x tables, remember to practice!

Have a great weekend!

Picasso art

Date: 6th Oct 2023 @ 1:33pm

This week we have been learning all about the artist Picasso.
we went to our very own Picasso art gallery and thought about what we could see and how Picasso's art made us feel.

"it was funny because they had lots of eyes."

"I can see shapes."

"it's colourful."

"it made me laugh and smile."

"I like it!"

We decided to take inspiration from Picasso and create our very own Picasso pictures. The children made some amazing art and then on challenge Friday they decided to use different media to create even more Picasso pictures.

Take a look at our pictures, we think we are all artists in the making!

Sports Day Reminder

Date: 5th Oct 2023 @ 7:56pm

We're very excited for you to join us at the Nursery Sports Day Meet and Greet tomorrow.

Now your child has settled into school, we'd like to share some activities with you to celebrate our Connected Curriculum 'Magical Me' learning.

Come in to school and stay with us after the gathering song. After the register we will move around the indoor and outdoor space activities in keyworker groups.

  1. Hand prints - choose paint that matches your child's skin tone, dip one hand in it and rub both hands together. Print both hands on the paper and then wash them.

  2. Dance and Sing - Move to some of our favourite action songs in front of the Interactive Whiteboard.

  3. The Stop/Go game - Move around the track in your vehicle making sounds and responding to the stop/go sign.

  4. Obstacle Course - Move over, under, around and through the obstacles set up on the playground markings.

See you all very soon 😃

Pirates Hats

Date: 5th Oct 2023 @ 7:07pm

This week in English, we have been learning how to write instructions. In reading, we have read lots of different examples of instructions. Today we read instructions for how to make a pirate hat. We carefully read the instructions and followed the steps. Here are our hats that we created with the instructions.

Who would like to be a doctor or nurse or lollipop person?

Date: 4th Oct 2023 @ 9:02pm

As we continue to learn about 'People Who Help Us', we have been dressing up and caring for our friends.

Who would you like to pretend to be?

Patterns Everywhere!

Date: 4th Oct 2023 @ 8:47pm

This week, in Maths, we have been learning to name and find patterns in the environment. First we played a game with the Stepping Stones, naming the patterns. Then we hunted for patterns in our classroom. Once we'd found a patterned object we used the sentence stem, "I can see a ..."

Practice saying these sentences then see if you can find the photo of that object.

"I can see a stripy chair"

"I can see a spotty toy"

"I can see a spotty die"

Our new pattern vocabulary is spotty, checked, stripy, swirly, plain and zig zag.

Send photos of the patterns you find in your house to

Evil Veggie Characters

Date: 4th Oct 2023 @ 7:34pm

In writing, we have been reading the story of Supertato! We have been exploring the characteristics of the Evil Pea! We have found lots of prefix words to describe him such as unkind, unfair, unpleasant and unstoppable! We have also generated lots of adjectives to describe his behaviour such as nasty, naughty, greedy, sneaky and cheeky! One of our favourite challenges this week was in the construction area, where we made models of evil characters and then written adjectives and prefix words inside speech bubbles to describe them. Check out our Evil character models!!

Forward Rolls

Date: 4th Oct 2023 @ 4:08pm

This week in PE we have been practising forwards rolls. We started by watching different demonstrations of a forward roll and used numbers for each movement within the roll.

1. Stand tall
2.Crouch down
3. Hands flat on the floor
4.Straighten legs
5. Lean forward
6. Tuck chin in and roll

Then we practised in small groups. We practised forward rolls to seated poistion and forward rolls to standing poistion. We all did such a fantastic job and really enjoyed learning a new roll. So far this term we have practised log, egg and forward rolls.

Gas Masks

Date: 1st Oct 2023 @ 5:22pm

In 6JT today we were researching information about gas masks and we had a go at putting one on. We all understood why people must have hated wearing them during The Second World War after either attempting to put it on or putting it on for a minute. We cannot wait for next week when we find out about evacuation and then set off to Ghyll Head and develop some understanding how that might have felt for some children.

Who helps us stay safe?

Date: 1st Oct 2023 @ 11:56am

This week we learned about two of the emergency services that help us stay safe. First we watched Fireman Sam and then we watched Paw Patrol to find out about uniforms, equipment and what firefighters and police officers do to keep us safe.
Here are some photos of us learning in the environment and pretending to be these characters.

School Trip Letter

Date: 29th Sep 2023 @ 9:40pm

Year 3 will be exploring the 'Golden Mummies of Egypt' exhibition at Manchester Museum on Tuesday 17th October! This is part of our history learning, where we have already begun exploring "what was it like to live in Ancient Egypt?"

Attached is a copy of the letter that was sent home on Thursday.

Please return this to school as soon as possible.

Week 4 in Year 3

Date: 29th Sep 2023 @ 9:34pm

A brilliant week in year 3!

We have been determined mathematicians this week, and have focused on using pictorial and concrete resources to represent 1s, 10s and 100s. It was challenging at first, but after some practise we were able to confidently use base 10, place value counters, bead strings and draw pictorial representations of 3-digit numbers.

In English, we have begun to explore our new challenge - writing a letter to Manchester Museum. We explored different letters, identified their features, and studied the difference between formal and informal language.

In science, we looked at different types of skeletons - we were all very surprised to learn that some animals don't have a skeleton at all!

Attached is a copy of our homework, which is due on Friday 6th October.

We have been learning through play!

Date: 29th Sep 2023 @ 5:46pm

Hello,

The children have been very busy this week and have enjoyed reading, writing and completing maths challenges outdoors. As part of their English learning the children have been reading and following instructions to make Whiffy Wilson's garden stew. They enjoyed collecting the ingredients from the school playground and following the step by step instructions to make the stew. They especially liked adding sloppy mud and lots of dry, crunchy leaves! Don't worry they did not eat it!

IMG_0682.jpg   IMG_0720.JPG

They also went in the hall for a purposeful play session where they had to listen to each other to complete tasks. The children confidently; shared, listened, co-operated, took turns and worked independently. They had so much fun!

IMG_0733.jpg

We also had an amazing sport's day and used our knowledge of how to keep fit to check our heart beat and keep hydrated. We are going to be using  knowledge from reading instructional texts and from healthy eating in the CC curriculum to make a healthy eating cook book this week!

keep reading our blog!

Week 4 in 5HC

Date: 29th Sep 2023 @ 5:27pm

We've had such a busy week! It seems to have disappeared in the blink of an eye.

We have been thinking about how we can improve our writing (we've previously written some fantastic character descriptions based on good and bad charcters from Oliver Twist) and making sure we stick to the plan so that our writing makes sense and flows properly.

In maths, we have continued our place value work and thought about the link between hundredths as a fraction and as a decimal.

We have also started to learn about how paintings from the past make excellent first hand accounts, as long as we consider how reliable they are.

The class earned 25 minutes of golden time this week and it was a really lovely session. The class seem to enjoy playing with lego so I will aim to gather some larger sets together in preperation for next week.

Please remember to complete homework by Friday and read every night if you can! Some children stand the chance to complete their book marks on Friday and receive a prize from the prize box.

This half term is flying by!

Week 4 in 4AK

Date: 29th Sep 2023 @ 4:18pm

What another exciting week in year 4!

In maths, we used our knowledge of place value to help us partition and represent numbers to 1000 using gattegno charts, place value columns and lots of other representations, next week we will be focusing on numbers to 10,000. In Science, we continued to explore teeth and how we can avoid tooth decay! We have also learnt about the features of a non chronological report in English  and planned our own on the Acient Maya. We can also name classroom objects in Spanish and can talk about how Diwali is celebrated!

'Can we go swimming every day?'- The children are really enjoying swimmimg and are growing more and more confident each week!

Homework is being sent home today (Friday 29th), there will be spellings, times-tables and maths work to practise. Please return your homework by Friday 6th of October. Spellings and timestables will be tested then. Also, please make sure you read every night and sign the reading record so we can be the best readers!

4RJ Week 4

Date: 29th Sep 2023 @ 2:13pm

It's Friday again and it's been another busy week.

Monday afternoon was spent doing some purposeful play, we spent time at different stations, foucssing on the skill of listening. Lots of the children enjoyed having an opportunity to play with a range of different activities.

In science, we explored how tooth decay was caused. There is a special formula to remember how acid is created. Elyas says "bacteria + sugar = acid." "Acid + Time = tooth decay." So make sure that you are brushing your teeth at least twice a day!

During our swimming lesson, lots of children had the opportunity to swim on their backs, some for the very first time!

With Miss Kent, some children attended glee club in addition to our music lesson. In our music lesson we explored using instruments which all belong to one family, percussion instruments.

Homework is being sent home today (Friday 29th), there will be spellings, times-tables and maths work to practise. Please return your home by Friday 6th of October. Spellings and timestables will be tested then.
