You can't take an elephant on a bus fact files!

On the last week of school we wrote some fact files about why you can't take an elephant on a bus. This fact file was our final piece of independent writing to finish this unit off. The build up included some skills lessons on how to use adjectives and the conjunction 'and.' It was based on the story 'You can't take an elephant on the bus!'

In English, we have been reading the story 'You can't take an elephant on the bus!' In writing, we decided to write a fact file explaining why you can't take an elephant on the bus. We generated lots of adjectives to describe the elephant and we also explored what the elephant might do on the bus. Take a look at our amazing pieces of independent writing!

Year 4 shares their writing with Year 3

Both Year 3 and Year 4 have worked extremely hard in their writing lessons this half-term. They've written myths, instructions, non-chronological reports, and diary entries! As part of their writing focus, year 4 chose year 3 as their target audience.

Year 3 were able to listen to year 4 share their amazing Maya myths, whilst providing positive feedback about the skills the children had clearly practised and worked hard at including.

This was a great experience for both year groups, and year 3 look forward to sharing their writing with year 4 soon!

Our Final Week Before Half Term

What a busy week!

On Monday we carried out the start of our science investigation linked to teeth. We put three eggs into cups of different liquides to see the damage they would do. We added water to one, orange juice to another and coke to another. We predicted the coke would rot the egg shell and cause the most damage. On Friday we were surprised to see that it was in fact the orange juice that  damaged the egg shell the most. It did contain more sugar. 

On Tuesday we had fun making our burrito. We followed our designs and got to take home the burrito as a tasty treat. 

On Wednesday I was lucky enough to go swimming and it was great to see all of the children enjoying their lesson and trying really hard. 

On Thursday we were very lucky to have a visit from the wheelchair sports coach and have a workshop on wheelchair sports. It was so much fun. We learned new skills and had an amazing experience. 

On Friday, after woring so hard all week we had our Golden Time where we dressed up in lots of fun costumes and really laughed so much. 

Well I'm shattered now and I imagine all the children are too! Have a fantastic week off and don't forget to do your holiday homework. See you after the holidays on Tuesday morning. 

Last Week of Term!

What a busy week we've had!

On Monday we put eggs into different liquids: milk, apple juice and diet coke, to investigate the damage these liquids do to our teeth. We recorded our results on Friday.

On Tuesday we made wraps that we designed for Design and Technology, we explored different ingredients and packaging to make the perfect wrap.

Year 5's Inclusive Wheelchair Workshop

Reception Sports Day

Today we have had a FABULOUS sports day! 

All of the children took turns and were very safe and careful.

In the afternoon we even had a very special visit from Coach Kane and we all had a turn of moving in the special wheelchairs.

Inclusion Sports Workshops

This week A1 Multisport and Coach Kane returned to school to deliver wheelchair sports activities the children. The aim was to deepen our understanding of what inclusion in sport means. As you can see below, the children had a lot of fun in the wheelchairs, going around the space and learning different skills such as spinning in a circle. 

We are explorers

As we come to the end of our 'Travelling from Pole to Pole' topic in Geography, the children enjoyed working together to make fact-file posters about the different contients we have been exploring. The children used their knowledge from lessons and investigated resources to show the names of countries within the continents, the climates and animals that live there.

Excellent English

This week, the children completed their own instructional text pieces following the learning we have been doing in English. Inspired by our class text 'The Disgusting Sandwich', the children have made their own disgusting sandwich recepies. We have had a big focus this half term on using time connectives, adjectives and expanded noun phrases. I am so proud of how hard the children have worked in their writing lessons and the features they have used to complete their pieces. 

Thank you for all of your support during our first half term! I cannot wait to see the amazing creations the children bring back as part of their holiday homework.

Thank you for all of your ongoing support during the childrens first half term in Year 2. It was lovely being able to have discussions with all the parents and carers at our pupil progress evenings and I am very excited for the topics that we will be working on next half term. The children have holiday home learning packs with lots of fun educational activities during the half term, we can't wait to see what you bring back to show us!

Coach Kane comes to school again!

Coach Kane visited us today in Nursery. We learned about people who need to use wheelchairs to move around. We took turns to sit in a chair and tried to move it by pushing the wheels around. It was very interesting learning about Inclusion.

We have enjoyed our computing lesson this week. We have been learning about the importance of logging on using a username and password. We have also been developing our mouse control skills using the website Sketchpad. We had fun using the different tools and drawing pictures on the Chromebooks. 

This week in maths we made polygons with straws

A polygon is a 2D closed shape with straight sides.

In maths this week, we have been exploring polygons and the perimeter of shapes. 

A Polygon is: A two dimentional shape, all the sides are connected with no spaces and all the sides are straight. 

Regular shapes are: shapes where all the sides are equal length and all of the internal angles are the same. E. g  A square, an equilateral triangle, a regular hexagon. 

We used straws of the same length to create regular polygons. Next week we will be using this understanding to work out the perimeter of regular polygons.

Teamwork in Year 5

World Mental Health Day and More in 2AH!

World Mental Health Day

Today we have celebrated World Mental Health Day. We have taken some time throughout the day to discuss how this event links to the rights respecting school Article 24 and how our mental health and wellbeing is a priority. The children took part in activities such as mindfulness colouring, we read 'Find your Happy' by Emily Coxhead as part of 'read Manchester' and also had some independent mindful reading. The children recognised how it is important to share our feelings and what we can do to support our mental wellbeing. 

This week in English we have started reading 'The Disgusting Sandwich' and have been practicing instruction writing for our own recipes. The children have been using time connectives, adjectives and conjunctions in their writing and I am so proud of how much they are expressing their ideas in this topic.

I am extremely proud of how the children are working this term and look forward to the exploring, creating, reading and writing we will be doing next week.

World Mental Health Day

This morning Reception have been participating in activities all about World Mental Health Day!

As part of Manchester's Take 10 to Read initiative, we all listened to best selling author Sue Hendra reading some of her FABULOUS Supertato stories! We decided that we feel calm and happy when we read stories!

Next, we spent some time thinking about all the ways we can feel calm and happy.

Whiffy's Stew

Good Afternoon,

This week, the children have been learning about the features of an instructional text. They have read instructions on How to make Whiffy Stew and then  enjoyed collecting the ingredients to make it from the school playground. They enjoyed getting messy and filling their cups with sloppy mud and water!

After that, they read the instructions and made the stew. They absolutely had a wonderful time and it was lovely to see them all laughing and smiling outdoors. it was a good job the sun stayed out too.

GHYLLHEAD!

Year 6 are off on an exciting adventure this week...we are headed to Lake Windermere for our residential trip to Ghyllhead. We are so excited! We are looking forward to all the challenges and fun activities we will take part in. Have a sneak peak of some of the things we will get up to!

Music sessions with Miss Kent!

On Thursday's we are very musical in 1AI!

We have singing assembly with Miss Kent and then every two weeks she comes into our class to do a music session with us. The week she isn't with us Mrs Iqbal tries to deliver it!!!

For the past few weeks we have been using our voices to think about tempo, listened and appraised the song 'What a wonderful world!' by Louise Armstrong and had a go at playing some musical instruments. We have also started to learn the names of these instruments and recognise what type of instrument they are - wooden, metal, string etc...

It's lots of fun on Thursday morning in our class!!! 

Naughty Bus!

Last week we finished off our writing unit all about Naughty Bus. Over the last 3 weeks we have learnt some vocabulary from the story, we read the story and created some actions/story map to help us retell the story. We sequenced the story and practiced writing sentences using capital letters and full stops correctly. Finally we wrote our very own versions of the story Naughty Bus to send off to the real life authors!

In provision we created our favourite part of the story using construction kits and wrote some sentences. In the writing area we wrote alternative versions of the story using book making equipment. In the creative area we designed our very own story maps using pictures and words from the story. In the funky fingers area we used the loose parts to create scenes from the story. 

We have really enjoyed our first text and writing sessions in 1AI! Next unit is all about writing factfiles about elephants using the story 'You can't take an elephant on the bus!'

Physical Development Sports Day

Today we had an amazing time when we invited our grownups in to Nursery to take part in our Sports Day. We completed our Friday Challenges with them:

1. We used fine motor skills to make skin tone handprints.

3. We listened to instructions to play a stop/go game.
4. We travelled around the obstacle course in different ways.

Reception Sports Day

Reception Sports Day will take place on Thursday the 17th of October. 

Please come to school in your P.E kit on the day.

The children will participate in 4 different activities straight after morning jobs. We expect to finish around 10.15am.

This week in 2AH!

We have had a fantastic week in 2AH this week!

In English, we have started to look at the features of instruction texts and focusing on imperative 'bossy' verbs. The children have been excellent in collaborating during learning time to discuss and share their own instructions using the features that they have discussed. Do you have any recipe books or instruction manuals at home? Practice reading these with your child and ask them to point out the features that they notice. 

I have been blown away this week by the children’s enthusiasm in their Maths learning. The children have been extending their knowledge of addition, adding three addends and independently using classroom resources to represent number sentences. It has been fantastic to see how the children are working with their peers to support each other in their learning and contributing so much to whole class learning.

In Geography this week, we explored hot and cold places around the world and how a countries distance from the equator determines if it will be hot or cold. The children used maps of the world to identify hot and cold places, used their knowledge to recognise the features of hot and cold places, and used reasoning to explain their knowledge of the worlds continents and oceans.

As we continue with our ‘healthy me’ topic in Science, the children found out about and described the basic needs of humans.  We discussed the difference between human wants vs needs, recognising the importance of water, food, and air to our survival.

Please remember to listen to your child read their home reading book each night, the children’s reading records are checked every day so please ensure to sign this with the date when you have listened to your child read.

The children also have this weeks homework in their bookbags, this is due each Friday. Please make sure that the children practice their spellings ready for their spelling test.

Goodnight Mr Tom

Year 6 has been reading Goodnight Mr Tom- a story set during WWII and is about a boy, Willie Beech, who is evacuated from London and sent to live in the countryside with a Tom Oakley a grumpy old man.

We have also been researching about evacuation during the war and have found out lots of information:

• the operation was called "Pied Piper"
• one and a half million children were evacuated
• the childen were called evacuees
• they were sent to live with "host families"
• a billeting officer collected them from the train station and took them to their new homes
• the governement had to persuade mothers to send their children away fromthe cities as they were relucant to do so
