Monday 11th May – Maths: Describing shapes
Date: 11th May 2020 @ 7:32am
Last week you completed lots of fabulous shape work with Mrs Ganner.
We are going to start this week by continuing your super work by talking about and using lots of words to describe the shapes of objects and use vocabulary to describe them.
Now I have been on a shape hunt in my garden. Take a look at the video (describing shapes below) and see if you can join in and use ‘Speaking Superhero words’ to help me describe the shapes I find.
Today’s challenge is to use super words to describe the shapes of objects. Have a look around your house or go outside and see what shapes you can find.
Use your ‘speaking superhero words’ to talk to your grown up and describe the different shapes you see.
Shape vocabulary: wide / narrow / long / thin / round / curved / straight / short / tall
You can also use the ‘Speaking Superhero’ cape symbols from class to help you (see below)
Have fun!
Date: 11th May 2020 @ 7:16am
This week we are going to continue learning about rhyme.
Remember rhyming words sound the same at the end.
I have a great story for you to listen to today. It is called ‘Oi Frog’.
Have your listening ears ready, so you can find the pairs of words that rhyme.
Click on the link below to watch and listen to the story ‘Oi Frog’.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPDyXsSbxOY
I hope you enjoyed the story and heard lots of rhyming words.
Did you hear and say and the pairs of words that rhymed? You can watch and join in with the story again if you choose to do so!
Today’s challenge is to look carefully at the pictures from the story below. Use the pictures tell your grown up the pairs of words that rhyme.
For example, in this picture the rhyming pair is dog and frog.
Can you draw a picture of your favourite rhyming pair?
We love seeing your work, so don’t forget to send a picture to: nurseryhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk
Have a great day!

Good morning Year 5!
I'm posting this bright and early today because I'm going to be going into school shortly, I'm very excited to see some of the children who are going in and have some lovely activities planned!
I hope you've had a lovely weekend - it felt like two different seasons from Saturday to Sunday didn't it! We had the paddling pool out on Saturday, and Livvi and Asaph spent the day in their swimsuits, then yesterday we went for a walk with hats, gloves and coats with a stop for a cup of hot chocolate from our flask!
It's Livvi's birthday on Thursday, so I've got lots to get ready to help celebrate her...it's strange having a birthday in lockdown, I wonder how those of you who have had your birthday these past few weeks have celebrated?
Remember to send us your learning this week to Y5homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk, we'd love to see!

Mrs Hodges here!
The first Sentence of the Day for this week, here we go! First of all, I'd like you to have a final watch of the Tim Peake video we looked at last week (which seems like a long time ago in my head!) for one more sentence to do with that. Then we'll watch a new video tomorrow!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBfxYBw2Sxo
Then here's our sentence:
https://www.showme.com/sh?h=sYaMYZk
Remember to check back later to see my corrected sentence!
Good afternoon everyone!
I've just got back after a day in school - it's so strange being there without all of you! How did you get on with today's sentence? Here's my purple pen for you to check your sentence against!

Good morning from Miss Wendt!
I don’t know about you but having Friday as a bank holiday really confused me! Guess what I did? I got up yesterday at 7am, had a shower and got ready to start some school jobs – completely forgetting it was Sunday, not Monday! It took me quite a while to realise it wasn’t time for school, I felt very confused all day!
I hope you’ve all had a lovely weekend and enjoyed the sunshine. I loved reading Miss Brookes’ celebration post about the amount of reading happening in Year 5. Well done to all those children who are reading daily and continuing to use the app. Keep your eyes peeled over the next few days for a Times Tables Rockstars Challenge!
Here is the fluent in five for today, I’ll be back later with the answers.
And here are the answers for today!

Good Morning from Miss Brookes!
I have woken up this morning in a brilliant mood - and I have no idea why! Hopefully it will stay with me for the rest of the day (or even the week).
I had an interesting weekend, first we celebrated VE day with a social distancing street party. We all sat in our front gardens with tea and cake, and shouted to the neighbours over the road.
Here's a picture of my family joining in, and sitting in the front garden - we had to put the lead on Merlin because he decided to bark every time someone walked past our fence (he's never sat in the front garden before). It is a sorry excuse for cake - but we had no flour in, and that's all we could find in the cupboard!
Then Yesterday, my Mum and I made some candles out of beeswax! It was very tricky, but we got there in the end.
Now on to today's GVP.
For today and tomorrow, we're focussing on determiners. The reason for this, is that even though it is something you learn in year 4, I know plenty of children in my class at least will have forgotten what one is.

Enjoy!

I can't believe it's that time of the week again to celebrate our amazing children (and parents/carers) who are doing some fantastic home learning.
We are amazed at all your hardwork and receiving your emails puts a huge smile on our faces!!!
Why not dance along to our celebration song from our Friday assembly...??
Date: 8th May 2020 @ 1:29pm
Some of you may be wondering why I haven't set any work for you today (you are very lucky). That is because today is a bank holiday as it is known as a special day where we celebrate together. Today is VE day (Victory in Europe Day) which marks the day towards the end of WW2.
I have attached a very interesting newsround page which explains why today is so important. If you would like to have a little look, you are more than welcome to :)!

Celebrations
Can you believe it’s that time of the week again! Where has this week gone! We hope that you are all having a lovely day, maybe you’re celebrating VE day or maybe you’re enjoying a relaxing bank holiday in the sunshine. Whatever you’re doing we hope you are having a lovely time, you deserve it!
We have had so many pictures of you and your learning in this week! It’s amazing to see how busy you all are and how you are still doing lots of learning in these strange times. We are so proud of you and we miss you all very much!
So here are this weeks superstar learners!
Look at this beautiful presentation! This child looks like they are concentrating so hard on making their learning look neat, I think that they are definitely getting ready for year 2! Well done!
You are looking very proud of yourself here! I think I would be the same if I had managed to complete all of that learning.
We are missing all of your creations so much! It’s lovely to see you making, creating and getting crafty at home!
Another child with stunning presentation! I think we are going to have some number line experts when we come back to school!
Look at this gorgeous flower. I wish the flowers in my garden looked like this.
I couldn’t believe the amount of words on this adjective list. It was more than I could think of. I think we have another child ready for year 2!
Here is another person concentrating mega hard on his home learning. I wonder if Mrs Hughes will let us carry on learning in our pyjamas when we go back to school.

VE Day
Today it is the 75th anniversary of VE Day. Victory in Europe Day/VE Day took place on May 8th 1945. It was a public holiday and day of celebration to mark the defeat of Germany by the Allied forces in Second World War.
On VE day people ran out in the street with flags and banners and they sung and they danced. They hung up bunting and had parties and food in the streets.
This year we are celebrating VE day and our May bank holiday a little differently. Here are some activities that you can do at home to celebrate VE day.
- Make your own union jack bunting just like the bunting that they had on VE day 75 years ago.
- Make your own union jack flags and banners and wave them whilst dancing to music in your garden
- Have a picnic outside
-Make your own special VE day medals
Whatever you do, we hope you have a lovely day.
Date: 7th May 2020 @ 4:06pm
On Friday it is going to be a Bank Holiday celebrating VE Day.
VE Day is short for Victory in Europe Day when different countries around Europe celebrated winning the second world war in 1945. This was celebrated with street parties and lots of celebrations. However, this year VE celebrations around Europe and UK will look differently.
Here is a timetable of things that will be happening nationally around the country on Friday:
We have attached a PowerPoint of information about VE Day along with some activities that you may want to try over the Bank Holiday weekend.
Have a lovely Bank Holiday weekend. Let’s hope the sun keeps shining!!!

Story Adventure The House on Haunted Hill Part 5
Date: 7th May 2020 @ 3:32pm
Well Maddison got to the answer first again! She has opted to go down into the cellar. Cross your fingers this ends well!
Here goes...
Descending the steps is scary and dangerous as they are covered in moss and mould. They are slippery and you have to be careful as you make your way into the cold depths of the house.
Faint slivers of moonlight dance through the small doorway giving you a dim range of visibility. You look around and see a small cupboard, its door hanging off its rusty hinges. A wooden stairway is in one of the corners probably leading up into the house.
Do you climb the stairs and leave the cellar
Open the filthy cupboard
Another choice!! What will YOU choose this time. Remember we are on the hunt for a Ruby Heart so sometimes you have to take chances.
All will be revealed on Monday but whoever gets their choice in first, that's the one I will take.
Date: 7th May 2020 @ 3:30pm
Good afternoon everyone!
I hope you have had a fabulous Thursday so far.
Right at the beginning of lockdown, when we sent home our home-learning packs, we included a checklist of different activities. I've attached it as a reminder.
How well have you done on the checklist so far?
Have you managed to reach gold? Platinum?
Email us and let us know on y5homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Olly Murs reads ‘Toad has Talent’ for the last of our bedtime stories this week.
It’s about a Toad who thinks he hasn’t got any talent and he’s nervous of entering the talent contest. Just like last night’s story there are lots of action words, ‘wiggled, jiggled, bend, twist, cartwheeled, slipped.
What talents do you have? What would you do?

Our last challenge of the week is my favourite one. You’re going to create an amazing piece of art!
Straight Shapes Shape Challenge
Look at the photos attached to this blog. What shapes can you see? All of the shapes are straight sided shapes. Can you name them?
You could use chalks or paint or felt tips to make your own straight shapes picture - make the straight lines with a ruler or masking tape like the one in the photos.
Next week Miss Heritage is going to set lots more fun challenges.
Have a lovely weekend

Good Morning 5CB! I am so proud of you all, for working so hard both at home, and in school (for those couple of children who are in still in school).
The work you have been sending me has been amazing, and has really cheered me up this week. I am writing the celebration post today because tomorrrow is a bank holiday, however, I am not going to write the winners of this weeks reading challenge, or the reading plus challenge, until tomorrow evening - to give you a fair five days to complete it.
The children this week, that have demonstrated outstanding learning are:
Jennifer
Jessica
Akin
Jackson
Victoria
What amazing work you have all emailed me! Look below for some pictures of their learning.
Please send in your heart photographs - we only have 7 so far, and Mrs Thewlis wants to make the video this weekend. y5homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Good morning,
Yet another lovely sunny day! I'm looking forward to getting out in the sun later although I actually got a little bit sunburnt yesterday! Remeber that suncream!
Today's challenge is a creative one, I'd like you to try a bit of origami. Origami is the art of folding paper and while it can be a bit tricky, it's also quite a nice relaxing activity once you know what you're doing and you end up with something that looks amazing. You could even make a few things and use them to decorate your house!
What you need for all origami is a square of paper, either plain or patterned. If youre not sure how to turn a piece of paper into a square then have a look here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPxi1dIWRws
Then you could take some time to decorate your paper if you like before you fold it.
Then this is a fairly simple one to get started, a butterfly https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWjEYlMZnhE
Just follow each instruction carefully and the good thing about watching a video is that you can rewind it as much as you like! If you're not a fan of butterflies then feel free to have a look for something else on the Red Ted Art channel.
Here's my butterfly that I've just made. It's not perfect but it's the first time I've ever done it so I was quite impressed with myself!
As always I'd love to see pictures of what you've made or of any past challenges, e-mail EALhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk to send them or even just to let me know what kind of challenges you prefer so I can make sure I'm doing ones that people like :-)
Past challenges
Thanks to all the children who have sent me pictures, you've all been very busy which is great to see!
Date: 7th May 2020 @ 10:28am
First of all I want to say a huge thank you and well done to everybody who has logged on to Lexia this week and has continued to read at home. I am very impressed! There has been a few children who have moved up a reading level this week on Lexia. Well done to Daniel, Andrew and Hashim who have received certificates! I can't wait to see who receives certificates next week. Keep up the hard work :)

Good morning Year 2,
Today is the last day of learning this week as tomorrow is bank holiday! I am excited for a long weekend break in the sunshine. Hopefully I can find more objects from the hunt sheet this weekend. I have added pictures of what I have found so far. Can you beat me?
English challenge
Today I would like you to look at the picture attached of the busy street and pick out objects (nouns) in the picture and write down adjectives to describe them in your book. For example, sharp teeth (sharp = adjective, teeth = noun)
Extension: Now you have thought of your adjectives and nouns, can you put them in to a sentence?
Maths Challenge
Using the greater, less than and equal symbols (< > =), I would like you to complete the number sentences independently:
3 < 7
27 ___ 35
38 ___ 48
8 ___ 11
60 ___ 60
9 + 3 > 6
14 + 7 ___ 25
12 – 3 ____ 9
16 + 10 ___ 26

Story Adventure The House on Haunted Hill Part 4
Date: 7th May 2020 @ 10:01am
Ok year 6 were are round the back of the old house now so let's see where today's adventure takes us...
You continue to walk around the back squelching through the cold mud and then you see a small door next to an open window.
As you get nearer, the wind blasts through and catches the door, swinging it open. You peer inside and see that it leads down into a dismal and dank cellar. You don’t fancy the idea of descending into such filthy depths.
Do you:
Go down into the cellar
Climb through the window
So year 6 we have another choice to make! Who will be the first to answer and make the choice? You can respond with your choice either on Twitter or through our email...
