RCW: Blog items
Date: 20th May 2020 @ 8:52am
Good Morning Reception!
Happy Wednesday – we are half-way through the week! J
Let’s begin our maths learning with a fluent-in-five!
This week in our maths blogs, we have been learning about how our numbers can be represented by using ‘tens frames.’ We can also use tens frames to help us with our addition and subtraction skills!
This morning I have posted a catchy ‘Tens Frame’ song at the bottom of this blog! Not only is it a great song, but it also tells us about a ‘counting on’ activity to play when using tens frames!
Today I have adapted this activity for you to take part in at home…we are going to be making our own tens frame! You could use different resources to make this, for example egg boxes, paper, lollipop sticks. To fill your tens frame, you could make your own counters if you do not have any at home or you could use any small objects instead! Your choice! Take a look at the different tens frames below…
The Activity:
Once you have made your tens frame, ask an adult at home to think of a number for you to count items into the tens frame. E.g If your adult says ‘3’, you have to put 3 items into your tens frame. Don’t forget the number you are beginning with!!
Then, you must cover your eyes or turn away!!
Your adult is going to either add or take away items from the tens frame and give you a clue to help you work out how many items you have now– without peeping!! E.g Child to cover eyes, adult to say… ‘I have added one more item, how many items are in the tens frame now?’
See if you can work it out without looking! Once you’ve had a go – uncover your eyes and see if you were correct! Then you can have a turn at testing your adult at home!! How fun! J
I’ve also added the link to the interactive tens frame if you would like some extra tens frame learning! J https://www.nctm.org/Classroom-Resources/Illuminations/Interactives/Ten-Frame/
I can’t wait to see pictures of your own tens frames! Enjoy!

Good Morning Reception!!
I can’t believe it’s the middle of the week already!! Where is this week going...? Let’s start our phonics activity with a phonics workout. Click on the video at the bottom of this blog.
Today we are going to learn a new sound called ‘or.’ Watch the show me video to learn all about this sound.
https://www.showme.com/sh?h=ExVQm00
Can you read these ‘or’ words? Get your grown up to time you…
Today’s practise and apply activities are:
Activity 1 – Can you add the sound buttons on the words and read them? If you have forgotten how to add sound buttons watch the show me video again.
Activity 2 – Find the ‘or’ words in the wordsearch.
Activity 3 – Choose the correct ‘or’ word for each sentence.
Activity 4 – Read the ‘or’ words on the balloons and pop them.

Good Morning Reception!!
In our story ‘The Snail and the Whale’ they were two main characters: the snail and the whale. Today we will be learning about the kinds of animals snails and slugs are.
First, look at this picture of a snail and slug. What do you think you already know…? What can you see? Where do you think they live? What do you think they eat?
Today I would like you to read the facts about snails and slugs with a grown up. What have you learnt about these minibeasts…?
Write three facts that you have learnt on the sheet attached to the blog or on a piece of paper.
Don’t forget to send in your photos/work to receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Good morning,
I hope everyone is well and taking good care of their mental health this week. We are still looking at kindness today and how important kindness is to keep everyone happy and healthy. Today's challenge will hopefully help everyone to see that kindness is all around us and I bet there are things that others do for us (and that we do for others!) that we barely even think about.
Today we're going to draw a kindness heart.
First of all draw a large heart on a piece of paper. Then on the left hand side write all the things that people do for you that are kind, all in different colours. Then on the right hand side write all the kind things that you do for others in different colours. If you can't think of many then maybe have a think of things that you could do. The acts of kindness could be as simple as just smiling at someone or saying good morning.
Here is mine if you would like to steal some ideas!
If you would like to share your kindness hearts then as always please feel free to e-mail me on EALhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk
Past challenges
Thanks to Mrs Iqbal who sent me her kind acts for the week!
Well done to the children that are still sending in their mask designs as well as their kindsness acts (one here has even made his mum a cup of tea and some biscuits!)

Good Morning Reception!
Who is feeling arty today?
Today we are going to be making a fun craft linked to 'The Snail and the Whale' story!
You will be creating the adventurous snail!
How adorable are these little snail friends!
You will need:
An old/recycled egg carton box
Paint/felt tips
Pipe Cleaners
Googly Eyes
Sellotape
Glue
The googly eyes on these egg carton snails are hilarious! You will have lots of fun using different colours to paint their shells J I can’t wait to see your fantastic creations!

Good Morning Reception!
Are you ready for your maths learning today?
Here is a fluent-in-five for you to begin with! How quickly can you answer these calculations below?? Can you work them out with your adult at home and see you if you can beat their time??
Yesterday in our maths blog, we were looking at how our numbers can be represented through using ‘tens frames.’ We were looking at how to answer addition questions using tens frames to help us! Please refer to yesteday’s Maths blog if you did not see it!
Today we are going to be using tens frame to help us to...
Recognise our numbers being shown in different ways
Help us with early addition skills
Here is a link to the interactive tens frame we were using yesterday, you can have a go at these activities to begin with! https://www.nctm.org/Classroom-Resources/Illuminations/Interactives/Ten-Frame/
Below I have posted links to some different activities when working out with tens frame:
The first activity is a ‘tens frame matching game!’ You have to look closely at the tens frame and work out the correct number of counters in them. There may be some other numbers there to trick you – see if you can work out which numeral matches the tens frame correctly!
How many counters are in this ten frame? What would the correct answer be?
The second activity is a ‘number bonds to ten’ activity. You have to carefully count the orange counters in the tens frame and work out how many more counters you need to add to work out the total answer. There is a number sentence underneath, you need to fill in the empty box which represents the blue counters!
Can you count the orange counters? Can you count the blue counters? Can you add on from 5 to work out how many there are all together? Fill in your answer in the empty box!
Have fun! J

Good Morning Reception!!
Today I would like you to think about where the whale took the snail on his back. In the story the whale took the snail to lots of different places around the world including…
The Antarctica where they saw penguins.
A desert island with lots of palm trees and a volcano.
In the deep ocean.
A place with lots of mountains and bears gazing at them.
I want you to imagine if you were the snail where would you like the whale to take you. It could be…
A place like a desert, cold area or with lots of mountains.
It could be a country, maybe one that you have already visited.
It could be a made-up place.
Use the sheet attached to finish this sentence:
If I were a snail, I would want the whale to take me to…
If you are in Mrs Iqbal and Mrs Cooper's phonic groups use the connective 'because' to give a reason why you would visit that place.
For example,
I would like the whale to take me to New York in America because I want to see the Statue of Liberty.

Good Morning Reception!!
Let’s start today’s phonic activity by recapping our Phase 3 tricky words. Start by singing and joining in with the tricky word song at the bottom of this blog.
Now play quick write using the Phase 3 tricky words. Your grown up will say a tricky word and you must write it correctly. Choose 2 tricky words and put them in your own sentences.
Sing along to the ‘ar’ song on the video at the bottom of the blog. How many words will you be able to read…?
Today’s practise and apply activities are:
Activity 1 – Choose some of the words from the ‘ar’ song and play treasure hunt. Write the words on scraps of paper and hide them in a room inside or in the garden. When you find a word read it and write it.
Activity 2 – Play ‘ar’ roll and read.
Activity 3 – Write the ‘ar’ word under each picture.
Activity 4 – Play Dragons Den on Phonics Play using this link https://new.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources/phase/3/dragons-den
Click on the ‘ar’ sound to read the real and fake words.

Did you know that this week is Mental Health Awareness Week?
The theme of this week is all about ‘Kindness.’ In these uncertain times that we are living in now showing and receiving kindness is great for our own mental health. Watch the video at the bottom of this blog to give you more information.
This week we would like you to create a ‘Kindness Jar.’ This is what you need to do…
Get a jar, plastic bowl or any container that you can find at home and label it with something like ________’s Kindness Jar.
Next use the acts of kindness cards for some ideas and choose 7 acts of kindness that you will be able to complete this week. One for each day of the week, including the weekend.
Then write the acts of kindness on scraps of paper or on post it notes.
Fold the paper up and put them in your jar or container.
Each day pull one act of kindness out of your container that you are going to do.
Here is Adam's Kindness Jar. Today he has pulled out the act of ‘thinking about someone in need.’
I wonder what acts of kindness you will do this week...Don't forget to send in photos of your acts of kindness.

Good morning everyone, its the start of a new week!
Thank you to everyone who has sent their amazing face mask designs, I've been blown away once again! Have a look below to see what you have all done.
This week it is Mental Health Awareness week so I will be posting some activities linked to this. Mental Health means looking after yourself to make sure that you are happy and healthy. The theme is kindness and involves being kind to yourself and others.
For today I've attached a little booklet for "The power of kindness" where you have to draw or write what kindness means to you and then write (or draw) 5 kind acts that you can do this week (it says month but I think we can squeeze them all into a week!) The acts of kindness can be either being kind to yourself or being kind to others. Perhaps a mix of both would be nice. If you can't print out the booklet then you can just type or write them out like I have :-).
Kindness to me means doing something nice to make somebody feel good and loved.
The 5 things I am going to do are:
1. Make my husband some cups of tea
2. Send a friend a little message through the post to cheer them up.
3. Phone my mum for a chat.
4. Have a nice relaxing foot spa while I watch one of my favourite films (for me)
5. Buy myself a litle treat while I'm out shopping, maybe some nice chocolate! (also for me!)
As always, please let me know what your ideas are by e- mailing EALhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Good Morning Reception!
I hope you have all had a lovely weekend. Can you email and share what you have enjoyed doing the most?
Let’s warm up for our maths learning this morning by listening to some of our favourite maths songs and completing the fluent-in-five questions below…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0Ajq682yrA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MVzXKfr6e8&t=3s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TgLtF3PMOc&t=17s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGetqbqDVaA
We can show our numbers in many different ways! Take a look at this Jack Hartman video below to remind you of the different representations!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAQ2HTqTl2w
Today in our maths blog, we are going to be looking at how our numbers are represented in ‘tens frames’ and using them to help us with our early addition skills! Thinking about numbers using frames of ten can be a helpful way to learn basic number facts.
Here is a link to a website which helps children to develop addition skills using a ten frame. Click on option ‘4. Add’ https://www.nctm.org/Classroom-Resources/Illuminations/Interactives/Ten-Frame/
You should see this on your screen:
Let’s work this first one out together! We have to use the tens frames to work out 7 + 7
In the first tens frame, I am going to count 7 counters, and then select ‘done’.
As the addition calculation is 7 + 7, I need to add another 7 counters into the second frame…
Now I have to ‘combine’ both tens frames together. This means we have to move over the blue counters to fill the tens frame so that we can clearly count all of the counters in an easier way.
Now that I have dragged over my blue counters, I can clearly see that the top tens frame is full – it is clear to see that I have ‘10’ counters in the top frame.
To make my counting easier, I can start counting from ‘10’ from the top frame and continue counting the blue counters in the frame below. I can see I need to add on 4 more..
Yay! First question complete! We have worked out the addition calculation 7 + 7 = 14. Can you have a go at working some out on your own??
I can’t wait to see pictures of your super work! J Good luck!

Good Morning Reception!!
This week we are going to continue using the story ‘The Snail and the Whale.’ If you haven’t managed t listen to the story, use the link below:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000cslw/the-snail-and-the-whale
Start by playing one word. Take turns with someone at home to say one word from the story. For example, snail, whale, soot, rock, sea, parrot, crab, school, children, penguins and so on.
Today I want you to read the sentences below. After you have read the sentences from the story, can you draw a picture to match the sentence? This will show that you have understood what you have read.
The snail sat on a black rock with his friends.
The big whale came out at night when the stars were in the sky.
The sea crashed on the rocks with the snail on the back of the whale.
Extra challenge – Can you make up your own sentence from the story and draw a picture?

Good Morning Reception!!
Hope you have had a lovely weekend and are ready for your home learning this week. Let’s start today’s phonic activity by getting active with Jack Hartman:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59u6KaluscI
Today we are going to learn a new sound ‘ar.’ It is still a diagraph with two letters that make up one sound.
Watch the show me video all about the ‘ar’ sound.
https://www.showme.com/sh?h=Lj4sakS
Today’s practise and apply activities are:
Activity 1 - Play Kim’s Game. To play this game you must…
Choose 3 of the words on the sheet.
Place them in front of you in a live and read them.
Then cover the words with some paper or fabric.
Grown up’s take one word away.
Uncover the rest of the words and decide which one is missing.
Activity 2 - How many words can you think of with the ‘ar’ sound in one minute…?
Activity 3 - Can you label the words with the ‘ar’ sound? Pick three words and write them in sentences.

Good morning and happy Friday! End of the week already! Fingers crossed we get some sun this weekend.
My last wellbeing challenge of the week is a creative one in case you want to spend some time on it over the weekend.
I’d like you to design your own face mask. As we know, face masks are being worn by many people at the moment to keep help them safe. If you had to wear one, what would you like it to look like? You can have whatever you want on it and make it as crazy as you like!
I’ve attached a template if you would like to use it but don’t worry if you don’t have a printer, you can just draw one like I drew mine! Here is mine for you to have a look at, now if only I could sew…
Please send me your designs as I’d love to see them! EALhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk
Have a lovely weekend,

Good morning everyone,
I've had a request to make the font on my blog a little easier to read so that some of the younger children can have a go at reading it themselves which is a fantastic idea, so hopefully this will be a bit easier to read!
I hope people enjoyed yesterdays challenge, I know that some people did the Jason Manford quiz at 1.30 so if anyone didn't get the chance to watch Friday the turtle or had any problems accessing the Facebook live video then here it is on YouTube today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvhZZq0UnJI
Today's challenge is one that will hopefully make you and others around you smile. I want you to tell someone a joke! In fact, I think you should try and make as many people laugh as possible! Laughing is very good for both your health and wellbeing and it's certainly one of my favourite things to do, especially if I'm feeling a bit sad.
If you don't know any jokes then have a look at these:
https://inews.co.uk/light-relief/jokes/jokes-kids-funny-497875
Here are some that I like!
What do elves learn in school?
The elf-abet.
Why didn’t the skeleton go to the dance?
He had no body to dance with.
Please e-mail me on EALhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk with your best jokes or any stories of making people laugh.

Good Morning Reception!!
Firstly, I want to show off some amazing work we have received this week from some of our wonderful children linked to the story ‘The Snail and the Whale.’
Well Done!!!
Today I would like you to think about the two main characters in the story, Snail and the Whale… What do they look like? What colours can you see? What shapes can you see? What size are the animals? Talk to your grown up about one of the animals. Remember to talk in full sentences…
Choose one character and write some sentences describing it and draw a picture of the animal.
For example,
The Snail has a hard shell on his back. The shell has a striped pattern that is brown and white. It moves very slowly because it is a small animal.

Good Morning Reception!!
Let’s start today’s phonic activity by joining in with a new song called the oo sound song. Click the video at the bottom of the blog.
I know after reading some of your emails and watching your videos that it is a little bit confusing when thinking about the way we say words with the long and short oo sound.
Watch my video at the bottom of the blog where I am explaining how to read words with the long and short oo sounds.
Can you read these words with the long and short oo sounds? How many can you read? Ask a grown up to time you.
Today’s practise and apply activities are all about the long and short ‘oo’ sound. Choose 1, 2, 3 or all 4 activities. Which one will you choose?
Can you sort out the words into the correct box in the table?
Play long oo and short oo treasure hunt. Cut up or write the words and hide them in a space inside or outside. Find a word and read it and put it in the right container labelled short oo or long oo.
Play the short and long ‘oo’ roll and read game.
Choose the long and short sound stories. Can you read them and make a list of all the words with the short or long ‘oo’ sounds?

Good morning everyone,
I'm sorry I didn't post a wellbeing challenge yesterday but I was in school! I meant to do it the night before but then forgot and had an early night ready for school yesterday, oops! Sorry about that but I'm back today and have a choice of 2 for you to do to make up for it.
You've been very creative lately (please see the past challenges below!) so I'm giving you something a bit different today. One is i you would like to relax and one is if you would like to have a bit of fun.
The first challenge is to do Jason Manford's comedy kids quiz at 1.30pm today, available from the following YouTube link. If you can't do it at 1.30 then it will be up for a few days after. and if you want more then have a look on his YouTube channel for past quizzes! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhVLZjO7Tms
The second challenge is also at 1.30pm although I think you can watch it later if you're not free then! The National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth are doing Turtle Time! A live video of their Green Sea Turtle who is called Friday. I always find watching sea animals very relaxing so you could watch it, learn some facts about turtles and then have a go at drawing the turtle. Ths live video will be on facebook so you'll have to ask an adult to log in to their account if they have one. https://www.facebook.com/NationalMarineAquarium/live/
Please e-mail me to let me know how you did in the quiz or any facts or pictures you have of the turtle! EALhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk
Past Challenges
I've been blown away by the effort you've gone to with these challenges (people have even dressed up!) and every time I get emails with pictures of your challenges it really cheers me up so thank you! Here are some pictures I've received over the last couple of days, thanks to everyone who's sent me one!
The Snail and the Whale Movable Craft
Date: 13th May 2020 @ 9:27am
Good Morning Reception!
Have you been enjoying ‘The Snail and the Whale’ story this week? Today we are going to be making a moveable craft using paper plates linked to this exciting tale! Take a look at what you will be making below…
Isn’t it fantastic?!
You will need:
Paper plate
2 Shades of blue paint/pens/pencils
Lollipop stick
Felt tip pens
Different coloured card (ideally white/blue/grey)
Scissors
Sellotape
Instructions:
Begin by painting/colouring in your paper plate in two shades of blue – if you don’t have blue you could add a bit of white/yellow to what you have and recreate the scene where the whale gets stuck on the beach!
If you are painting, while it’s drying you can begin to create the snail and the whale! On a piece of card, draw a picture of the two friends and colour them in! It’s better to use card over paper as it will stand up better when you play with your paper plate. Attach a lollipop stick to it using Sellotape.
Cut a sun shape out of yellow card and glue this onto your paper plate. Then carefully cut a line along the bottom of the paper plate… this should go from one side to the other but not go to the actual edge or you’ll cut the bottom off the paper plate.
Pop your lollipop stick through the hole and your snail and the whale craft is ready to be played with!
Enjoy! I can’t wait to see your creations! J

Good Morning Reception!
Happy Wednesday J We are halfway through the week!
Let’s warm up for our maths learning today by listening to maths songs and completing our fluent-in-five questions below…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0Ajq682yrA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MVzXKfr6e8&t=3s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TgLtF3PMOc&t=17s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGetqbqDVaA
Today in our maths learning we are continuing to add more and take away using ‘first, then and now’ mathematical stories. Please refer to yesterday’s maths blog if you missed it!
We use the ‘first, then and now’ structure to create mathematical stories in contexts children can relate to. Placing a calculation into addition stories can help children to see the calculation in a meaningful context. Children are able to visualise the addition calculation as they tell the addition story.
Take a look at all of these superstars below who completed their ‘First, then, and now’ addition stories yesterday! Well done J
Today we are going to be looking at mathematical stories to help us subtract/take-away. Presenting subtraction in this way can help young children to visualise the calculation and understand that some are being taken away.
Take a look at the first question below!
Count the frogs in the ‘first’ column… how many are there altogether? Write the answer in the box below (5).
Then count the frog that has jumped from the log in the ‘then’ column… write this in the box below (1.)
In the ‘now’ box, you should be able to count how many frogs are left. Write this underneath (4.)
Well done! The answer to this 'first, then and now' question is 5 – 1 = 4!
I have attached some more questions in the link below… enjoy! How many can you work out? J
Date: 13th May 2020 @ 8:22am
Good Morning Reception!!
This week we have listened to a new story called ‘The Snail and the Whale.’ If you haven’t listened to it look on Monday’s blog.
Today I want you to look at the two main characters in the story: the snail and the whale. What words would you use to describe them? Tell your grown up your ideas…Remember to talk in full sentences about the characters.
For example,
The snail has a hard shell on his back.
The whale has a huge body that is white and dark blue.
Your challenge today is to cut up the words on the sheet and try to make a sentence from the story. If you don’t have a printer write the words on scraps of paper. When you have made the sentence stick it on a piece a paper and draw a picture about the sentence. This will show that you have understood what you have read!
There are two sentences that you must work out. Grown ups the answers are on the third sheet for you to check.
Don’t forget to send in your photos/work to receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk
