Year 6 trip to Stockport Air Raid Shelter
Date: 29th Nov 2024 @ 4:31pm
On Thursday, Year 6 made the trip back in time to 1941 to visit the air raid shelters in Stockport. Opened in 1939, the shelters were the largest purpose-built civilian air raid shelters in the country designed to provide shelter for up to 3,850 people. They were extended in 1940-41 to accommodate 6,500. People travelled from all over the country for the chance to remain safe during the Blitz attacks on Britain.
Y6 got to experience first-hand what daily life was like in 1940s wartime Britain. They completed chores, sang songs and even had to 'make do and mend'! Then, they took a trip down the mile-long network of underground tunnels. We got to see what happened during an air raid, what people experienced and how being underground saved thousands of lives.
Have a look at our fabulous photographs taken on the day! More photgraphs will be uploaded next week!

The events of The Great Fire of London
Date: 28th Nov 2024 @ 2:32pm
Last week in History, the children explored the timeline of events during 'The Great Fire of London'. We remembered how the fire started and then discussed how it spread easily through the streets of London and how Samuel Pepys started writing about the events in his special book called a 'diary'. The children looked at how the fire burned down St.Paul's Cathedral and spread all the way across to the Tower of London, which luckily didn't catch fire. We talked about how the fire then started to die down as the wind changed and people used fire hooks to pull down the houses.
Following their learning, the children collaborated to make their on 'Great Fire of London' timeline for our display board in the classroom. The children used their amazing writing and creative skills to show the events of the 'Great Fire' and are very proud of their work. Take a look below of how amazing it looks!

1HB have been learning how to make attachments to models. We have explored how to attach a flange and tabs so that we can then use these skills to make a stable model house for someone living in Clayton. The flange was very useful to make a chimney and the tabs were perfect to make a moveable front door. We had lots of fun designing and making our models. Next week we will evaluate our models to conclude what worked well and what we could do to improve them.
Date: 23rd Nov 2024 @ 6:32pm
During this half term's topic 'How has the world around me changed?' we have a design and technology project that we need to do. We learnt about what design and technology is and the three parts that are needed in any DT project - design, make and evalute. Our DT project is called create a stable and strong house model. Last week we designed our stable model house and explored how to use two joining techniques called flange and tabs. The flange joining technique created the chimney part of the house and the tab technique created the windows and doors. Then we spent Friday afternoon making our model houses. We used our designs to make sure we aded the correct number of windows, doors and other parts such as the chimney and drainpipes. Some models even had a back door and flag! Next week we will evalute our model houses and make an improvement to them.

Hello,
This week, the children went on a visit to the Greggs Factory. The children were very excited and couldn't wait to see how bread is made now in comparison to in London 1666.
They walked all the way to Openshaw Village which took them 45 minutes. Luckily, the weather was glorious and the sun was shining bright. The children walked around the factory and were lucky to watch how the bread dough is made, how the bread is kneaded into buns, how it is cooked and how it is packaged. They got to visit the warehouse where the ingredients were stored and watch how the ingredients are weighed and put into bags. Before they could go onto the factory floor they had to wash their hands and put on a special hat and jacket.
After the factory tour the children returned back to the classroom where they got to meet some special characters and decorated biscuits. The children went back to school with a special Gregg's cake that hasn't even been in the Greggs shops yet!
The children were very tired but had a fantastic time! The Gregg's team were very kind and extremely helpful.
The children were very lucky and even got to eat the cakes that they decorated! They have asked to go back soon.
Thanks
Miss Wolfenden and Miss Edey

Hello,
The children have enjoyed learning about and celebrating Bonfire night. They have linked this learning to the festival of Diwali, the festival of lights. The children shared the story of Rama and Sita and enjoyed finding out How and Why Hindu families celebrate Diwali. As part of this learning the children made lanterns and Diva lamps. They enjoyed sculpting the clay to make a pot and then using the mark making tools to add patterns. They finished their work by using paints to decorate them. They used their reading skills to independently read and follow instrucctions to make lantern. Look at what they created!
Thank you
Miss Wolfenden and Miss Edey

Hello,
We all hope you had a fantastic half term break and are excited to be back. This week the children have been introduced to the new topic ' The Great Fire of London' and have enjoyed completing the Launch activities. As part of the Launch the children created ' London in 1666' pictures using pastels and tissue paper. The children used charcoal to sketch tudor houses. They are a very creative class and really enjoy getting creative! I think you will agree that their creations are beautiful!
In maths, the children have been continuing to use the concrete objects in the classroom to add amounts. They have worked hard to add 3 addends and find the total. They have used their knowledge of number pairs to ten to help them!
I think you will agree they have made a fantastic start to the new term!
Thanks
Miss Wolfenden and Miss Edey

What an exciting few weeks year 3 have had!
This half-term, year three have been learning many new skills.
In maths, we have explored measurements - focusing on centimetres, metres and millimetres. This was a challenge at first, but well done to everyone for persevering, because we are all now able to confidently estimate the height and length of objects. This week, we will begin to measure the objects using rulers and tape measures.
In reading and writing, we have written our very own dilemma story! Using the story 'the Great Kapok Tree' for inspiration, we have explored how to use direct speech in order to convince a man or woman to save the rainforest from deforestation. Direct speech is a very tricky skill, one that we are still practising and hope to use in more pieces of writing.
We have also begun our geography topic, 'what impact can humans have on the Earth?' Throughout this unit, we are exploring both the positive and negative impacts that humans have on the planet - including pollution, deforestation and recycling. What could you do at home to help the Earth?

Next week we are heading to Stockport for the day to visit the war museum there and to spend time in the underground shelters which provided a safe place for the people of Manchester to take shelter from Hitler's bombs. We are really looking forward to our visit and finding out even more about what life was really like for the people of Manchester during the Blitz.
Check back for some pictures of our visit...

Last week was a very busy week in 1AI!
We finished our writing linked to an information flap book about the parts of the house. Our next writing outcome will be instructions. To get us started we decided to make some wolf puppets linked to our key text 'The Three Little Pigs' as a hook. We will then write some instructions about how to make the wolf puppets thinking about the key features of how to write instructions.
Our trip to the Gregg's bakery
Date: 15th Nov 2024 @ 9:15pm
This week has been very special in 2AH! We have been extremely busy with starting our subtraction work in Maths and having school photos taken. This week we also had Remembrance Day on Monday, in class we discussed why we have Remembrance Day, the meaning of wearing a poppy and completed some creative tasks to show our thanks and remembrance. It has also been anti-bullying week, the class discussed choices which are and are not respectful, responsible and safe. We discussed how we can show kindness in our classroom, to our friends, our family at home and others. The children had some lovely reflections, discussing how using our voice to speak up is brave and that we all deserve to be treated with kindness.
To end our week, we had our class trip to the local Gregg's bakery. This links to our current history topic 'Could the Great Fire of London happen in Clayton?'. We have explored how the Great Fire started in a bakery on Pudding Lane, and how ovens and bakeries are different now compared to when the fire started in 1666. At the Gregg's factory, the children were able to see all of the different machinery used to make bread rolls and pizzas. The children had a go at sorting their own pizza dough ready to be baked and also enjoyed decorating their own gingerbread men. We had some special visitors, including Pudsey Bear who the children were extremely excited to meet. Take a look at some of our photos below:
The whole class have been great representatives of our school whilst out in public this week and I am so proud of how they are working in Year 2. For being so incredible during our trip, and during the whole week, I have awarded our behaviour star this week to the whole class. Well done 2AH, I am extremely proud of you all!

In writing, are preparing to write a non-fition book to describe the materials used to build a house. First we started by learning about how a house is built and what materials are used to build them. The next day, we explored some of the materials by visiting stations in the class room. As a class, we used our senses to describe brick, wood, slate and plastic to generate lots of adjectives for our working window. We will use these adjectives within our non-fiction books when we come to write them.

Today in Nursery our learning centred around Remembrance. We watched a video that helps younger children understand this important time of year.
Here it is for you to look at again over the weekend, with your children at home - Poppies by the BBC
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
We talked about how the animals felt at different points in the animation and lots of the children showed a good understanding of the changing emotions. One child stated, "It's the soldier's light' at the point in which the poppies began to grow again after war. This was a beautful moment of insight to share with his class.
Everybody used either their scissor skills to snip or their talking fingers to tear grass for the poppies to grow in. Later on the children chose if they wanted to create a poppy. They followed Steps 2 Success to make tissue paper or painted poppies. Here is the picture from the end of the animation that inspired us and then our very own field of Remembrance Day Poppies. We hope you love it as much as we do.
Date: 8th Nov 2024 @ 5:15pm
For our golden time this week, we voted to design and make models of different periods of history. Check back next week for the final outcomes!
Date: 8th Nov 2024 @ 2:27pm
Today Reception have been learning about Remembrance Day.
We watched a special video...
We looked carefully at all of the beautiful poppies that grew in the fields and we used different media to make our own.
Which one is your favourite?
Date: 7th Nov 2024 @ 3:40pm
Yesterday and today, during story time, Nursery had a special visitor. One of the junior children came to read one of her favourite stories to us. The Nursery children were an excellent audience, looking and listening and joining in with words and actions. Our visitor told the story with such good intonation and expression. Maybe she will become a Nursery teacher when she grows up?
