Houses

Date: 3rd Nov 2024 @ 9:27am

We have launched our writing topic this week by reading the traditional tale of "The Three Little Pigs". We have explored the features of a brick house and considered why it was the best house. We have also completed lots of different challenges to label the features a house. We have designed and labelled a house using graph paper and then used the constrcution blocks to build our designs. We have used card, tissue paper and shiny paper to create a collage houses and named their features. We have been busy in our funky fingers area, using the sticks or peg boards to make houses, we then labelled the features using post its.

The Great Fire of London and Diwali

Date: 31st Oct 2024 @ 9:30am

Welcome back!

It has been a lovely first week back in 2AH, I have enjoyed hearing all about the children's half-term break and seeing all of the amazing holiday homework creations. The children were so excited on Tuesday to show their creations to the rest of the class and these are now on display in our shared area.

History

This week we have launched our new History topic: Could the Great Fire of London Happen in Clayton?

The children have discussed what they would like to learn about the Great Fire of London and have made some amazing silhouttes of the Great Fire to add to our classroom display. This half term we will be doing a lot of activities all about the Great Fire of London and I am very excited to see the children become immersed in their exploration.

English

We have also started our new unit in English, Poetry. The children will be writing poems linked to the Great Fire of London and this week we have been reading poems all about bonfire night, finding adjectives that describe the sounds, colours and shapes of the fire. I was very impressed with the amazing adjectives that the children contributed to our class working wall and look forward to see how they apply these to their own poems.

Diwali

To celebrate the Hidu celebration of Diwali - The Festival of Light, we made our own diya candle holders. The children used their fine motor skills to make their diya's from clay and we look forward to painting these and bringing them home to light with our families next week. Just look at how proud the children were of their work!

Harvest Celebration

Date: 30th Oct 2024 @ 7:18am

Just before the half term holidays, Year 6 joined Nursery for a Harvest Celebration. The Nursery children had been learning about how farmers harvest the food during Autumn. They also found out why farmers use scarecrows.  Nursery loved the scarecrows so much that they learned and then performed a song and dance about them to the older children.

Click on the link to sing along to Dingle Dangle Scarecrow

Knowing how much Year 6 like to dance, the Nursery children then paired up and danced a Samba! Harvest Samba

The younger children loved sharing their learning with Year 6 and we hope to do it again very soon. Thank you Year 6 for being an amaxing audience and for looking after us.

You can't take an elephant on a bus fact files!

Date: 27th Oct 2024 @ 4:42pm

On the last week of school we wrote some fact files about why you can't take an elephant on a bus. This fact file was our final piece of independent writing to finish this unit off. The build up included some skills lessons on how to use adjectives and the conjunction 'and.' It was based on the story 'You can't take an elephant on the bus!'

Listen to the story using this link:

Enjoy reading some our fact files describing elephants appearance and behaviour on a bus.

You can't take an elephant on the bus!

Date: 26th Oct 2024 @ 7:52am

In English, we have been reading the story 'You can't take an elephant on the bus!' In writing, we decided to write a fact file explaining why you can't take an elephant on the bus. We generated lots of adjectives to describe the elephant and we also explored what the elephant might do on the bus. Take a look at our amazing pieces of independent writing!

Year 4 shares their writing with Year 3

Date: 19th Oct 2024 @ 7:32pm

Both Year 3 and Year 4 have worked extremely hard in their writing lessons this half-term. They've written myths, instructions, non-chronological reports, and diary entries! As part of their writing focus, year 4 chose year 3 as their target audience.

Year 3 were able to listen to year 4 share their amazing Maya myths, whilst providing positive feedback about the skills the children had clearly practised and worked hard at including.

This was a great experience for both year groups, and year 3 look forward to sharing their writing with year 4 soon!

Our Final Week Before Half Term

Date: 18th Oct 2024 @ 5:27pm

What a busy week!

On Monday we carried out the start of our science investigation linked to teeth. We put three eggs into cups of different liquides to see the damage they would do. We added water to one, orange juice to another and coke to another. We predicted the coke would rot the egg shell and cause the most damage. On Friday we were surprised to see that it was in fact the orange juice that  damaged the egg shell the most. It did contain more sugar.

On Tuesday we had fun making our burrito. We followed our designs and got to take home the burrito as a tasty treat.

On Wednesday I was lucky enough to go swimming and it was great to see all of the children enjoying their lesson and trying really hard.

On Thursday we were very lucky to have a visit from the wheelchair sports coach and have a workshop on wheelchair sports. It was so much fun. We learned new skills and had an amazing experience.

On Friday, after woring so hard all week we had our Golden Time where we dressed up in lots of fun costumes and really laughed so much.

Well I'm shattered now and I imagine all the children are too! Have a fantastic week off and don't forget to do your holiday homework. See you after the holidays on Tuesday morning.

Last Week of Term!

Date: 18th Oct 2024 @ 5:19pm

What a busy week we've had!

On Monday we put eggs into different liquids: milk, apple juice and diet coke, to investigate the damage these liquids do to our teeth. We recorded our results on Friday.

On Tuesday we made wraps that we designed for Design and Technology, we explored different ingredients and packaging to make the perfect wrap.

We are explorers

As we come to the end of our 'Travelling from Pole to Pole' topic in Geography, the children enjoyed working together to make fact-file posters about the different contients we have been exploring. The children used their knowledge from lessons and investigated resources to show the names of countries within the continents, the climates and animals that live there.

Excellent English

This week, the children completed their own instructional text pieces following the learning we have been doing in English. Inspired by our class text 'The Disgusting Sandwich', the children have made their own disgusting sandwich recepies. We have had a big focus this half term on using time connectives, adjectives and expanded noun phrases. I am so proud of how hard the children have worked in their writing lessons and the features they have used to complete their pieces.

Thank you for all of your support during our first half term! I cannot wait to see the amazing creations the children bring back as part of their holiday homework.

Have a lovely time creating!

Miss Hindle.

The children have holiday home learning packs with lots of fun educational activities during the half term, we can't wait to see what you bring back to show us!

Have a lovely half-term break,

Miss Hindle.

Coach Kane comes to school again!

Date: 16th Oct 2024 @ 2:05pm

Coach Kane visited us today in Nursery. We learned about people who need to use wheelchairs to move around. We took turns to sit in a chair and tried to move it by pushing the wheels around. It was very interesting learning about Inclusion.

Repeating Patterns

Date: 16th Oct 2024 @ 2:00pm

Did you know you can create a pattern by repeating the same object over and over again? We have made lots of repeating patterns this week. Can you make one?

The Disgusting Sandwich

Date: 13th Oct 2024 @ 8:58pm

Hello,

This week the children have continued to learn how to write instructions. As a hook to engage the children to write, we read 'The disgusting Sandwich' The children enjoyed reading about all the disgusting ingredients that can be used to make one. After reading the story, the children thought of their own ingredients and generated adjectives to describe them. They even generated expanded noun phrases using adjectives with the same initial sound to make their descriptive sentences more exciting for the reader.
Here are some of our ideas
' Slimy, Sludgy slugs'       ' Wriggly Worms'    ' black, tiny ants'    ' wet, white bird poo'   '
To help the children describe their ingredients and use time connectives and bossy verbs to write a set of simple instructions the children used play doh to create their ingredients. look at their work

A polygon is a 2D closed shape with straight sides.

Maths in 4JB

Date: 11th Oct 2024 @ 4:41pm

In maths this week, we have been exploring polygons and the perimeter of shapes.

A Polygon is: A two dimentional shape, all the sides are connected with no spaces and all the sides are straight.

Regular shapes are: shapes where all the sides are equal length and all of the internal angles are the same. E. g  A square, an equilateral triangle, a regular hexagon.

We used straws of the same length to create regular polygons. Next week we will be using this understanding to work out the perimeter of regular polygons.

Teamwork in Year 5

Date: 11th Oct 2024 @ 2:48pm

This week in PSHE, we explored teamwork through a fun activity where we collaborated to build a spaghetti model structure.

World Mental Health Day and More in 2AH!

Date: 10th Oct 2024 @ 12:43pm

World Mental Health Day

Today we have celebrated World Mental Health Day. We have taken some time throughout the day to discuss how this event links to the rights respecting school Article 24 and how our mental health and wellbeing is a priority. The children took part in activities such as mindfulness colouring, we read 'Find your Happy' by Emily Coxhead as part of 'read Manchester' and also had some independent mindful reading. The children recognised how it is important to share our feelings and what we can do to support our mental wellbeing.
