In Reception, we have been learning about different types of celebrations. This week has been a very special week as we have been celebrating: Diwali!
First we listened to the story of Rama and Sita. We learned that Diwali is a festival of lights!
Next, we made cards for our grown ups. We decorated them with rangoli patterns. We even designed our own mehndi patterns!
Finally we learned how to perform special dances for Diwali.
It has been such a fun week! Why don't you ask me all about Diwali at home?
Date: 2nd Nov 2023 @ 2:10pm
Today in Reception, we have been exploring different ways of making fireworks. Which is your favourite?

This half term we have been learning all about special celebrations π
The children have been learning about big world celebrations as well as celebrations that we celebrate just with our friends and friends at home.
This week the children have been preparing to celebrate Rosie, our home corner baby's, birthday. They have been counting down the days on our calendar, making party hats, party menus and shopping lists and decorating our classroom.
Today we finally ended the countdown and celebrated Rosies birthday. We sang, danced, played games and had a great time.

This week the children have been learning all about harvest. They learned about the different fruit and vegetables that will be harvested at this time of year and even learned a song about the combine harvester that the farmers use to harvest their crops.
The children made their own harvest fruit and vegetable crowns and worked together to make an amazing red combine harvester.
What are we learning about next half term?

On Wednesday Rabaz came to visit us in reception! He performed his amazing tricks and the children were amazed!
Everyone had a go at performing a trick on the stage. We can see lots of football trick super stars in the making!

This week we have been learning all about the artist Picasso.
we went to our very own Picasso art gallery and thought about what we could see and how Picasso's art made us feel.
"it was funny because they had lots of eyes."
"I can see shapes."
"it's colourful."
"it made me laugh and smile."
"I like it!"
We decided to take inspiration from Picasso and create our very own Picasso pictures. The children made some amazing art and then on challenge Friday they decided to use different media to create even more Picasso pictures.
Take a look at our pictures, we think we are all artists in the making!

This week we have been getting ready for sports day. We have had lots of discussions about how we can be healthy and decided that one way to be healthy and get energy for sports day would be to make our very own healthy food.
On Thursday we tasted different fruits and described how they felt, looked and tasted. Then on Friday we made our very own class fruit salad. The children loved eating their fruit salads and everyone tried their best to try new foods with their friends.
"mmm this is very fresh! I'm going to get my Mummy to make one with me." William
"It feels soft and squishy and smooth" Armeen
"It smells so fruity and tasty and I just want to eat it!" Kylah
"The apples! Because it's got juice!" Arthur
"I love fruit it's going to make me feel so strong and healthy" Lucy
"I am proud of me for touching and tasting it and it actually tastes so nice!" Armeen
"My favourite was the melon!" Beau
"We need to eat vegetables and fruit everyday. We need to have much sleep!" Hannah
"It smells so lemony" Imogen
"Strawberries are so bumpy" Damifunre
"I liked the juice. I like the apple and the banana and the strawberries!" Chukwuemeka
"I think this is a little sour... but i like it!" Awa
"My body feels healthy and strong and ready to run fast!" Nathaniel
"It made me feel happy" Myah
The children learnt that their bodies and brains need lots of things to make them feel happy and healthy including healthy food, excercise, sleep and good friends.
The children would love to make fruit salads at home with their grown ups. It would be lovely for you to make them together and share your pictures with receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

What a fantastic week we have had in Reception! We have loved learning all about Mo and all the different super speedy ways he can move!
We also started our phonics sessions this week. Thank you so much for your support in making sure that you bring your book bag to school each day. We have sent home the phonics sounds that we have been practising this week so your children can show off how well they can read them!
We look forward to welcoming you back to school on Monday.

? Welcome to Reception! ?
We have had a lovely week welcoming back our Reception children and meeting lots of new friends too!
This week we have been getting used to our new classrooms and have been exploring all of the new toys and things that reception has to offer inside and outside. The water area has definitely been a hit this week ??!
In literacy this week we have read the book 'a superpower like mine'. We have talked about what makes each of us super - being kind, caring, brave, funny and have all made our very own superhero pictures and labelled them with our names.
In maths we have looked at height and have read the book about Ernest the giant moose who just couldn't fit in a book! We measured things that were taller and shorter than us and used maths vocabulary to compare different objects.
Next week we are so excited to start reading the story 'Ready Steady Mo' and can't wait to get started with our phonics sessions!

Good Morning Reception – Happy Wednesday! We are already halfway through the week! Can you believe it?!
Let’s warm up for our maths learning today by listening to some maths songs below and taking part in today’s fluent-in-five!
That one was little bit tricky! How did you do?
Today in our maths learning, we are going to be focusing on counting one less and subtraction/taking away!
Let’s begin by counting backwards from 20! Ready… 20, 19, 18…..
Now try this with an adult at home.. Count backwards from 20 saying one less in turns. E.g Adults begin with 20, children say 19, adult say 18, etc…
Great! Do you feel ready for more subtraction learning? Let’s begin with our ‘Subtraction with Pirates’ song below! Yo-Ho!
Let’s help Pirate Pete with his subtraction!
Pirate the Pete has 4 chests full of treasure.
He uses 1 chest of treasure to buy a ship.
How many does he have left?
1……2……3! Pirate Pete has 3 chests left!
How can we write this as a number sentence?
4 – 1 = 3
Fantastic! Give yourselves a pat on the back if you got it right! J Let’s try the next one!
5 treasure maps are made for a journey.
1 map is stolen!
How many maps are left?
How can we write this as a number sentence?
3 Compasses are found by Sarah the swashbuckler.
2 of them are broken, so she throws them into the sea!
How many does she have left?
Can you work it out? Write it as a number sentence!
Make sure you email in your answers or pictures of your work to receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk! I can’t wait to hear from you! J Good luck!
I have also a ‘Pirate Subtraction up to 10 Worksheet’ below if you would like some extra learning!

Good Morning Reception,
Here are the answer’s to yesterday’s ‘Sentence of the Day…’
The small dog had lots of fur on his back.
Today’s sentence of the day is…
can yoo pass the broan paint.
Start by playing one word about the story ’10 Little Pirates.’ How many different words can you think of from the story in 1 minute? Listen to the story again from yesterday’s writing blog if you need to.
Today I would like you to practise your reading skills. I want you to read some words or sentences about pirates. Remember to use your segmenting and blending skills. Also don’t forget the tricky words that you should now be reading confidently. After you have read each word or sentence, can you draw or match to a picture?
Mrs Iqbal and Mrs Cooper’s Phonic groups – Practise reading the sentences and draw a picture to match the sentence.
Miss William’s and Miss Cogger’s Phonic groups – Practise reading the words and match to the correct picture.

Good Morning Reception,
Let’s start our phonics today by recapping Phase 3 tricky words and the new tricky words from Phase 4.
Play fastest finger first. Your grown up will say a tricky word and see who finds it the fastest.
Play quick write. Your grown up will say a tricky word and you must write it without looking at the words.
Today we are going to learn a new sound called ‘ow’ think of the word ‘cow’ for this sound. Watch the video at the bottom of this blog where I am teaching you all about this sound.
Here are today’s practise and apply activities, which one will you choose?
Activity 1 – Play ‘ow’ sound roll and read.
Activity 2 – Make a word and use it. Choose a ‘ow’ word and read it. Then write the word and draw a picture of that ‘ow’ word and finally write a sentence using that word.
Activity 3 – Read the ‘ow’ sound story
Activity 4 – Play splat the ‘ow’ word. Find something to use as a splatter, make sure it is safe and check with your grown up. Write some of the ‘ow’ words on scraps of paper and lay them down on the floor inside or outside. Your grown up will say the word and you must splat it. You can also use the ow words from activity 2.

Arrrgh…..me hearties!
Now that we are learning about pirates in reception, I thought it would be a great idea if we make a craft linked to our new topic…. And what’s a pirate without their treasure!?
Today we are going to be making… A Pirate Treasure Chest!
How fantastic does that chest look!
You will need:
An Egg Carton
Gold Paint
Sequins
Treasure!( Coins/Gems/Jewellery etc)
How to make:
First, peel off any stickers from your egg box and paint two gold strips across the top! While the paint is wet, lay on a few sequins or glitter to stick to the paint! Add a lock to the front of the treasure box using a silver felt tip or pencil and leave to dry!
Now… get hunting for pieces of treasure!!!!
Have fun! I can’t wait to see pictures of your creations! J

Good Morning Reception!
I am SO impressed to already see lots of fantastic work being emailed in from yesterday!! You are becoming superstars at careful counting and addition! Well done!
Let’s get ready for our maths learning this morning by listening and working out to our 'Count to 100' song below and taking part in today’s fluent-in-five!
This morning we have a very special task to complete…
We need to help the pirate to count his treasure! Take a look at the ‘1-15 Pirate Counting’ video below and help the pirate to count his golden gems!
Yo-ho! Fantastic! What number did you count to? How much treasure did the pirate have? How many gems would the pirate have if you added one more?
Today I would like you to take part in your own treasure counting activity!
You will need:
Tray of sand (or shredded paper)
Coin Cut-Outs (see attachment link – or make your own!)
Treasure Chest Posters (see attachment link)
Activity:
Parents begin by hiding the bronze coin cut-outs in the tray of sand/shredded paper or around the house!
Place the ten-frame poster showing the pirate looking for bronze coins alongside the tray. Children need to look for the bronze coins in the sand and place them onto the ten-frame as they find them. Ask children how many they found and ask them to carefully count and point to each one!
Repeat the activity by hiding the silver coins in the sand. Again, ask children to find them and place them onto the ten-frames to count! For the gold coins, ask children to find them and place them onto the lower-ten frame. The pirate has already found some gold coins so children can count on from ten to find the total number of gold coins!
Next steps:
Provide children with simple addition calculations i.e 2+ 2 and see if children can work this out using the coins and ten-frames! Encourage them to write this as a number sentence!
Don’t forget to email in pictures of your work or to tell us about your learning at receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk! We can’t wait to hear from you! J Good luck!

Good Morning Reception,
Here are the answer’s to yesterday’s ‘Sentence of the Day…’
I have hurt my head with a ball.
Today’s sentence of the day is…
tthe small dog had loots of fuur on his bacc.
Yesterday we started a new story called ’10 Little Pirates.’ In this book we saw 10 pirates doing lots of different things. Listen to the story again by clicking on the video at the bottom of this blog. Answer these questions about the story with a grown up:
What were the 10 pirates hunting?
What went zap when the pirates were searching for their pirate mate?
What happened to the ship when the waves went crash?
Who went chomp to a pirate?
Who said ‘coo-ee!’?
Three little pirates were wondering what to do on the barrels. If you were one of the pirates, what would you do?
Look at this picture from the story. What can you see…? Write some captions or sentences about the picture.

Hello and welcome back to the start of our final half term of this school year !
As you know, Mrs Glover has been setting us wellbeing challenges to keep us feeling positive and productive over the last few months. It has been fantastic to look back at all the photos you have sent her showing your creative work!
For the next few weeks, Mrs Glover is lucky enough to be going into school each day to teach as we start opening up the school to certain year groups, so I'll be setting your wellbeing challenge.
So, here's your challenge for this week:
Can you set yourself an exercise goal for the week and try and do a different exercise each day? It could be going for a walk with your family, making up a dance , going on a bike ride, jumping on your trampoline, doing an online workout like Joe Wicks or doing 30 star jumps in your kitchen!
Use the chart below to record your exercise each day ( or just write it on a piece of paper if you do not have a printer) and send it in to:Ealhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk . If you would like to share a photo during the week ,send it in too and I can post it on the blog for others to be inspired to try your idea !
I can't wait to see who can be an exercise superstar!

Good Morning Reception!
I hope you have all had a lovely break and have made the most of the fantastic sunny weather! How did you spend your break? I would love to hear all about what you got up to in the holidays! J
Let’s warm back into our maths learning by beginning with a fluent-in-five – you should all be experts at these now!!
This term in Reception, we are going to be learning all about PIRATES!
I thought it would be a great idea to use pirates to help us in our maths learning today, I have even included an exciting pirate song to listen to below! Take a look!
This morning in our maths learning, we are going to practise our addition skills by adding together pirate items and writing the calculation down as a number sentence.
You can begin by choosing one of the items below!
See if you can draw one of the items and see how many you can make! Count out each one at a time, adding one more as you count.
Ask your adult at home to write you a calculation – Can you work this out by using your pirate items? Now can you write your own number sentence? Take a look at the example calculations below… Can you work them out?
Below I have attached a link to even more pirate addition calculations if you would like an extra challenge! Don’t forget to email in pictures of your work or to tell us about your learning at receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk! We can’t wait to hear from you! J

Good Morning Reception,
I hope you have all had a relaxing half term holiday and are ready to continue with your home learning. It’s a strange way to start the final half term of the year but let’s see what happens over the next few weeks.
We are going to continue to learn Phase 3 sounds and begin to learn the Phase 4 tricky words.
Start by singing along to a new tricky word song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NOzgR1ANc4
At the beginning of the video, I am reading 4 of the tricky words from Phase 4. Can you watch the video and read them? Practise writing the tricky words on some paper.
Our new sound today is ‘ur.’ Look at the pictures and words on the poster, which ones can you read?
This half term, each time we learn a new sound I will be posting a video to help you. Watch today’s video at the bottom of the blog.
Here are today’s practise and apply activities, which one will you choose?
Activity 1 – Label each picture with the ‘ur’ word.
Activity 2 – Find the ‘ur’ words in the wordsearch.
Activity 3 – Treasure hunt in the garden or room in your house. Write ‘ur’ words from the video on scraps of paper and hide them. Find a word and read it. Can you write the word on a piece of paper?
Activity 4 – Put some of the ‘ur’ words from the video into some super sentences.
