Year 5AK: Blog items
Date: 6th May 2020 @ 8:44am
Good morning Year 5!
I think we've got a couple of lovely, warm days with us today and tomorrow, hooray! I managed to weed the garden over the weekend, and I'm very pleased with how tidy it's looking, so I'm excited to be outside for a bit later today. I think Asaph is keen to put up a mini tent we have and use it as a den!
We'd love to see what you've been up to - remember to show us by emailing us at Y5homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk
Don't forget to send in your heart photos

Hello! Mrs Hodges here.
Two activities from me today - firstly, the Sentence of the Day.
https://www.showme.com/sh?h=SBGz0oi
There's not many corrections in today's sentence because I'd like you to focus on adding in parenthesis where you think it would be most helpful (clue: remember parenthesis can be used to explain the meaning of a technical or scientific word...if you're not sure what any of the words in the sentence mean, go back and rewatch Tim Peake's YouTube video I posted on the Monday blog!)
The second activity is a Writing/Vocabulary activity. I've attached a Pobble document called, "Fairytale Ending" - I'd like you to look at two little activities from it. Firstly, have a look at the "Question Time" section and have a go at answering them to help you think about the image you can see. You could write your thoughts down or talk about it with a brother or sister, or your grown up.
Then I'd like you to focus on the "Sentence Challenge" part.
I walked across the field towards the door.
Consider other verbs for "walk" - how does changing this verb impact the picture the reader would have about the character and how they're feeling about approaching the house? To get you started, here are some other verbs you could use:
crept, sauntered, bounded, sprinted, wandered, strolled
Do you know the meaning of these verbs? Can you act them out to show how you would move? Are there other verbs you could use instead?
Practise writing 3 or 4 sentences where you change the verb each time, and think about how this impacts the meaning of the sentence. Which one do you think is most effective?
I'm looking forward to seeing your sentences!
Good afternoon Year 5!

Miss Wendt here!
Good morning everyone, hope you are all well and looking forward to a very sunny Wednesday. I was writing your reports in the garden yesterday. It was a chance to look back and think of all the fun things we do in Y5, and how much progress you have all made this year. I think in 10 years time we'll all still be talking about the events in 2020!
Answers from yesterday!
Have a look at the different ways I have chosen to partition 0.62. This question is a find all possibilities, there were many! Remember to email your answers.
Here is the fluent in five for today!
I'll be back later with the answers
...and here they are! How did you do today?
--
Good morning from Miss Brookes!
Thank you for all your emails yesterday - they always put a huge smile on my face! I hope you're enjoying the nicer weather this week (sorry about last weeks rain!)
Today's GVP is all focussed on relative pronouns - how many can you remember? We look at 6 key ones today.
https://www.showme.com/sh?h=coAnV4q
Enjoy your Wednesday!
Date: 5th May 2020 @ 10:20am
Good morning everyone,
I don't know about you but I can't wait to get out in that sun so today's challenge is one that can be done outside if you like.
Today we are focusing on having a growth mindset and doing this through yoga. Having a growth mindset means you have a positive attitude to your learning and know that just because you may find something difficult and you can't do it yet, you will get there as long as you don't give up!
Here are 5 different growth mindset yoga poses to try. Please feel free to try as many or as few positions as you like and send any pictures to EALhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Thank you so much to the pupils who have sent in pictures of their shields of strength from yesterday, it really makes my day to see what you've ben doing!

Good morning Year 5!
I hope you're all well and ready for this new day! We're ready for PE with Joe (we've done it every day!), and I know those few children going into school are doing some Yoga. What will you do today to get your body moving?
We'd love to see the learning you get up to today, remember to email it over to us!

Hello from Mrs Hodges!
Here we go with today's Sentence of the Day!
https://www.showme.com/sh?h=EreTpqa
Remember to check your sentence later using the purple pen video I'll post this afternoon!
Good afternoon! (well, nearly evening!)
Oh dear, I'm very late in posting my corrected Sentence of the Day today - I've been out for a walk with Asaph while Livvi had a Zoom dance lesson. We were finding some rocks and pebbles for an activity that I'm wondering about doing when I go into school on Monday! Anyway, do not fear Year 5, here is the purple pen sentence!
https://www.showme.com/sh?h=wlzJ64O
--
Hello from Miss Wendt!
Well I didn't start my day doing PE with Joe but I am doing some daily yoga though. It's very gentle and good for stretching the sore muscles in my ankle and leg. I did have an accident the other day - I was stood on the stairs and I had to lean forward, putting pressure on my arms. Well I wasn't really paying much attention and ended up falling and headbutting the stairs! Ouch!
I have 2 challenges for you today - one is the usual fluent in five and the other is a fraction problem. I'll be back with the answers later.
Fluent in five answers!
I will post the answers to the fraction & decimal challenge tomorrow morning - you still have time to email your responses!

Good Morning Year 5! From Miss Brookes
I didn't start off the day with P.E either, instead I was feeding my guinea pig (Cinders) with a syringe because she had a tiny operation yesterday to get her teeth shaved (apparently they were rubbing on her tongue and stopping her from eating)! It was quite funny when we brought her home, because she was stumbling and wobbling all over the show from the anesthetic!
Today there are two bits of learning from me. Firstly, GVP.
Thank you so much for the GVP sentences you emailed in yesterday - Jennifer's made me laugh and feel very nostologic!
It said 'I was clearly not allowed to say an-I-oop, an-I-oop, an-I-oop in the classroom.' 5CB know how much these tiktok trends annoy me in the classroom! Though I have a secret to share, since we have been off school...I have found myself making tiktoks myself! The horror!
Today's GVP is all about Homophones:
https://www.showme.com/sh?h=Ryfa90i
I hope you enjoy completing the homophone board game!
For science, we are focussing on the Moon. Next week we will be looking at moon phases, but today we are exploring how the Moon was formed.
https://www.showme.com/sh?h=0WrDy4m
I've also attached a video of the Moon landing!
Enjoy
Date: 4th May 2020 @ 11:24am
Good morning everyone,
I hope you all had a good weekend and are ready to work hard on your learning (and your wellbeing!) this week.
Today's challenge has actually come from a website that Mrs Hughes sent to me to look at so thank you Mrs Hughes!
Today I would like you to think about resilience which means keeping strong and bouncing back even in a difficult situation. I'd like you to design a Shield of Strength.
Think about what your strengths are, especially the ones that can help you at the moment while we're not in school, and write or draw (or both!) onto a shield. Here is my shield that you may want to use for help:
I have attached a template of the shield in case you want to use it but otherwise you can just fraw a shield on a plain piece of paper.
As always I would love to see your challenges so please send them to EALhomelearning@ravensbury.sch.uk
Mrs Glover
Past challenges
Thank you to Shawnakaye who has sent me a couple of photos of things that make her smile!

Good morning everyone!
Last week's reading challenge was to read 5 books on reading plus! Since we have been off school, there has only been around 11 children at most, per a week, on reading plus. Last week, even more of you took part! I'm excited to say that 21 of you accesssed Reading Plus last week! That's nearly double the amount of the week before. Well done everyone.
This week, we are focussing on the number of words you read, rather than the amount of books.
Can you read more than 3,500 words this week?
Good luck!
Miss Brookes
Date: 4th May 2020 @ 8:47am
Good morning Year 5!
May the 4th be with you everyone! (groan...that's Asaph's - who loves Star Wars - FAVOURITE joke, and today is the day he can actually say it!!)
We hope you had a lovely weekend, it looks like the sunshine is returning this week, hooray! Perhaps you'll be able to go on a short walk, bike ride or have time outside in your yard or garden this week. Fresh air is always fantastic for our minds and bodies, especially at this time we find ourselves in!
Are you ready for this new week of learning? We can't wait to see what you get up to, remember to email us on Y5homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk to show us!

Mrs Hodges here!
Right, before the first Sentence of the Day for this week, I'd like you to have a watch of this amazing video from Tim Peake - a British astronaut who spent 185 days on the International Space Station in 2015-2016.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBfxYBw2Sxo
Isn't it amazing how differently water behaves without gravity! I just love watching it!

Hello from Miss Wendt!
I did laugh at Asaph's favourite joke! I do quite like Star Wars...I'm not a big fan, but I like the special effects in the films and I must admit, I do have some Stormtrooper pyjama bottoms!
Thank you to the children who emailed over the weekend with their work. Wow, hard work at all times from Year 5! Well done Yousef and Ganesa, I will share your work on Friday!
Here are today's fluent in five questions! I will catch up with the answers and another challenge later!
And here are the answers! Thanks to Ganesa who has sent in her work today!

Good Morning from Miss Brookes!
Wow, it didn't take long for a 'May the 4th' joke to appear! Much to my Dads horror (who loves the Star Wars films), I have never managed to see a whole movie. I've seen bits and pieces of them...but whenever my Dad puts them on at home, I fall asleep during it, every time! Oops.
Today's GVP is continuining from Thursdays lesson on Adverbs of Possibility. Thank you to the children who completed the least certain-most certain scale. Can you beat your high score of how many Adverbs of Possiblity you can remember in 30 seconds? Don't forget to email us your score - Jessica won on Thursday's lesson (well done, Jess!)
I'm looking out for who can make the silliest, or funniest of sentences today - so don't forget to email them along!

Good Afternoon Year 5!
Even more of you went on Reading Plus this week - well done! Mrs Hodges, Miss Wendt and myself are so proud of you all. This weeks winners are:
Most Lessons Completed: Denico (at 10 books! Well done)
Most Words Read: Sam (6,675 words!)
Both 5HW and 5CB now have 5 wins! Who will take over next week?
Don't forget to check your individual class blogs, where we will announce who has successfully completed this weeks reading challenge.
Well done everyone,
Miss Brookes
Date: 1st May 2020 @ 10:54am
Well done, 5CB! I am so proud of all of you, for trying so hard with your work this week. We've had some amazing Connected Curriculum challenge responses:
Look at Denico's paper mache Earth!
And look at Victoria's guide to living in Space!
They are both amazing! Thank you so much for sending in all your work, it puts a huge smile on my face. This weeks outstanding learners are:
Akin
Denico
Ivory
Jennifer
Jessica
Victoria
Zana
I've attached some of their work below so you can take a look!
This weeks reading challenge winners, who managed to read a total of 5 books (well done!) are:
Dencio (10 books)
Sam (6 books)
Even though not all of you managed to read 5 books and score 80%, more of you took part in Reading Plus this week - which is what the important part is. I am so proud of you all.

Hi everyone and Happy Friday! I can't believe it's already the end of another week. I hope everyone is working hard and staying safe.
I got the idea for today's wellbeing challenge yesterday when I saw the most amazing rainbow in the sky. It was the brightest colours I've ever seen and I could see the whole arc. There was even a faint second rainbow next to it!
Photos don't really show how amazing it was but you can see how vivid the colours are:
The rainbow made me feel happy when I saw it and I thought it might make other people happy too! So today's challenge is to take a photo of something that makes you feel happy. You could find something in your house or do it on a walk. It could be a person, an animal, an object or even something that you've made. Anything that makes you feel happy or positive. If you don't have a camera, phone or tablet of your own then ask an adult if you can borrow theirs but please be careful with it!
If you'd like to share your happy photo then please e-mail it to EALhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk, I'd love to see it and then I can post some of them and spread the happiness around!
Have a good weekend,
Mrs Glover
Past challenges
Thanks to A who sent a photo of himself doing the breathing exercises I set yesterday, I hope they helped you feel nice and calm.

Happy Friday Year 5!
We're finally into May - which is a month I always look forward to - it's mine and Livvi's birthdays this month! (not for a couple of weeks yet, but I'm already planning Liv's birthday cake!)
We'd love to see what learning you get up to at home today, and remember to check back onto your class blog pages later to celebrate the fantastic work you've been doing this week!
So far both classes have 7 heart photographs! Let's keep that number rising everyone.

Hi from Miss Wendt!
I can't believe it is May already! Even with our very different circumstances at the moment, I feel the year is flying. This week in particular has gone very quick. I think what I've enjoyed the most is the number of children who are emailing the Y5 team - we have heard from lots of people this week, keep it up!
Here is the fluent in five for today:
Abass in 5HW made a request yesterday for some websites to visit for online learning (the kind of activities we sometimes use in class). I promised I would post the links today -
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize
Maths answers for today!

Good morning from Miss Brookes!
It's May at last! This year seems to have gone very quickly, despite being stuck at home. Can you believe that we've been off school for the whole of April? It's such a strange feeling.
Yesterday we had children email us with a photograph of the work from the home learning pack that they were struggling with. That was a great way to reacting to the problem - if you come across any work that you find tricky, email us and let us know what work it is, and then one of us will reply with some advice, or maybe even create a 'showme' video explaining it to you - I did one for Ivory yesterday when she came across a maths problem that was challenging. The same goes for parents - we're happy to answer any questions you have about your child's learning. Email away! Y5homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk
Now, onto today's GVP. Today's lesson is a recap of Monday-Wednesday (we're continuing with adverbs of possibility next week, so I haven't included it today). Can you remember the three key themes?
Please email us with the area you found the most challenging over these last two weeks, so we can focus on it next week.
Here's today show me video:
https://www.showme.com/sh?h=qPsPQ8m
And here are the answers:
Date: 30th Apr 2020 @ 10:01am
Good morning everyone,
I hope everyone enjoyed some relaxing colouring yesterday, here is a picture of mine. It isn't quite finished yet but I had a nice relaxing hour doing it last night:
Today's challenge is to do a mindfulness breathing activity. Mindfulness can help you relax and be in the moment, appreciating everything that's around you.
Just one breath
Find a relaxing place where you won't be disturbed. Sit in a comfortable position, either with your legs crossed or any comfortable posture. This activity can be done in as little as one minute, but you can also do it for longer periods of time.
Begin by setting a timer for one minute.
Start breathing deeply in and out. Notice how the breath feels as it moves in and out of your body. Notice how the air feels on your skin. Pay attention to any sensations that you notice or any sounds that you hear.
Take another slow deep breath and see if you can imagine how the breath moves down into the lungs and then back up again. Thank your body and breath for giving you life and keeping you healthy.
Take one more deep breath and hold the breath for a moment - then release it.
If any thoughts worry you, try and imagine your thoughts immersed in a white, puffy cloud and push the thought cloud out of your awareness.
Afterward, notice how you feel after taking this one-minute break.
If you want to tell me about your experience or send any photos of yourself doing the activity then e-mail me on EALhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk.
There are more simple instructions below.
Mrs Glover
Date: 30th Apr 2020 @ 8:53am
Good morning everyone!
It's the last day of April - I don't know about you, but it feels like it's been a very long month!
I'm sure you'll be pleased to know that Livvi has finally finished her story (that she started over a week ago!), she's very pleased with it and titled it, "The Curse of Bastet". Asaph did some writing yesterday too - his teacher wanted him to continue the story of "Dinosaurs in my School" and think about two more places in school that the dinosaurs could ruin. He chose the playground and the toilets...and found it ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS that he drew a poo and wee in the toilet that the dinosaurs didn't flush away. He also needs to "have a stretch" after literally every word he writes. That's 6 year olds for you I guess! I'm definitely missing working with you wonderful Year 5 writers!
Anyway, let's move on from that...Miss Wendt, Miss Brookes and I are so enjoying see the learning you're emailing across, keep it up Year 5!
y5homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk
5HW are currently winning with 7 heart photos! 5CB have 6. Which class will win?

Hello from Miss Wendt!
Mrs Hodges, I was laughing so much at Asaph's "Dinosaurs in my School" story!
Sadly I don't have anything featuring dinosaurs, poo and wee - but I do have some maths! Have a look at today's fluent in 5 task.
*hint* remember our learning on square and cube numbers!
I've also included another challenge today, recapping on our fractions work which we completed at the start of the year. Who thinks they can email the correct response?
I will update with the answers later!
For our Spanish learning today, I have chosen a favourite song of 5HW's! The song is called Tengo Hambre which means I'm Hungry!
Have a look at the video below and try to write as many food words as you can. I promise you will be singing the song for days!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uu5gm6LgCzo
Maths Answers!
Did anyone get the answer to the fractions question? The answer is...they were all correct! Whitney was counting in improper fractions, Eva in mixed fractions and Teddy counted using some equivalent fractions.

Good morning everyone! From Miss Brookes
My internet wasn't being cooperative this morning, so it took me a little longer than I would have liked to get this post up. It's working now, and hopefully it will work for the rest of the day.
I think Mrs Hodges will have to bring those two stories to school when we go back - I'm intrigued, especially by Livvi's effort and committment (and of course, Asaph's humour)!
I recorded today's GVP video yesterday evening, and I was all snuggled up with a blanket and a cup of tea - my ideal evening! Thank you to all of the children that have emailed their word mats for yesterdays learning - keep them coming!
Today's focus is all about adverbs of possiblity, and it will continue into Monday's lesson as well.
https://www.showme.com/sh?h=wJOX6Q4
Here's a reminder of the adverbs of possibility we used, to help you with your work:
certainly, definitely, maybe, possibly, surely, clearly, obviously, perhaps, probably, undoubtedly.
How many did you remember in 30 seconds?
Enjoy your Thursday!
Date: 29th Apr 2020 @ 10:35am
Hello everyone,
It's a rather miserable looking Wednesday out there so my wellbeing challenge today is an indoor one.
It's actually quite a simple challenge today; I'd simply like you to do some colouring. Colouring is a lovely relaxing activity that you can do on your own for some me-time or together with a family member to make it a more sociable activity.
I think most of you were given some colouring pages when we finished school but if you've already used these and don't have any more at home then good news, there is a website where you can do online colouring:
https://www.online-coloring.com/
Or you could always draw something to colour! Anything you like.
I have a new Enchanted Forest colouring book that my husband bought me (pictured below) that I'm going to do a bit of colouring in later, maybe while I listen to a podcast or to some music to have a bit of a break from staring at a screen. I'll post a picture of my efforts tomorrow.
Remember to send in pictures of your challenges to EALhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Past challenges
A big thanks to Roderigo from Year 1 who sent me a picture of his crystal ball challenge from yesterday, some fantastic goals there!

Good morning!
How is everyone today? We're up and ready for PE with Joe, and I think Livvi and Asaph have chosen to do some Science, Writing and Art for today. We'd love to see your completed activities for today, remember to email us!
Thank you to all the children who have sent us a heart photograph so far! They are: Jennifer, Denico, Victoria, Ivory, William, Zain, Alissia, Maddison, Aden, Rhianna, Lilly-Anne and Taissa! Six children in each class...I wonder which class can send them in first? y5homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Mrs Hodges here!
Hello! Two activities from me today - the first is the Sentence of the Day, which is still to do with the YouTube video I posted on Monday where Chris Hadfield shows us how he makes a sandwich on board the International Space Station. Click on the link in Monday's blog post if you haven't watched it yet!
Here's today's sentence!
https://www.showme.com/sh?h=afialqi
The second activity is working on our writing and vocabulary. I've attached a document called, "The Visitor". First, I'd like you to have a look at the section called, "Question Time!" to get you thinking about the image you can see. Secondly, I'd like you to read the "Sick Sentences". At the moment, the two sentences given are not very detailed and use repeated vocabulary to describe the robot. Can you improve the sentences by describing what you can see in more detail? Remember that skill we've been practising in school - show not tell. How can you show the reader than the robot is big without simply telling the reader? See if you can write 3 or 4 sentences, including these things in some of your sentences:
* relative clause
* 2a sentence
* -ly, -ing or -ed sentence opener
* conjunction to extend the sentence
I can't wait to see the sentences you create! If you have time today, there's a lovely activity on the same document asking you to design your own robot and describe it. If you fancy doing this too, I'll be very impressed!
Thank you to those children who have emailed their Sentence of the Day in today! Click on the link below to see my purple pen!

Good morning from Miss Wendt!
After a very exciting time yesterday, today is back to normal. I've still got my balloons up though!
I thought we'd try a challenge today; this will practice sequencing and counting on/back in 10's. Have a look and I will post the answers later.
Have a look at Aden's work for a good explanation of the right answers! If you count back or forward in 10's, the ones digit will never change -
43, 53, 63, 73, 83
119, 109, 99, 89, 79, 69, 59
I've also attached a blank multiplication square, just in case you want to practice a timed challenge at home. Get someone else in your house to time you, and email me your times! We can create a leaderboard to see who can complete it the quickest!
--
Good Morning Year 5! From Miss Brookes
I hope you all enjoyed your Monday, I was especially happy when it rained as I enjoyed an impromptu 'family film night' with my parents, while video-calling my sister as she watched the same movie! I apologise to everyone that wanted sunshine, I may have jinxed it as it's looking chilly today too!
A huge thank you to everyone that has completed their Connected Curriculum challenge so far - be sure to look out for your photographs in Friday's celebration post.
Well done to Aden who has already read 5 books this week! There are quite a few of you who are almost there as well.
Now, onto today's GVP.
Today, we are looking at adverbials. I even included a fronted adverbial at the start of that sentence, can you spot what it is?
Don't forget to share your adverbial word mat with us, and keep it safe so we can use it when we go back to school. You can use the template attached, or create your own - whether that's on a computer or piece of paper (if you do it on a computer/tablet, email the document across to us and we will keep it safe until school returns). When we get back to school, we can laminate them to stop them from getting damaged, and then use them in our writing lessons! I'm looking forward to seeing how creative you can be.

Enjoy your Wednesday!

Good morning everyone,
Today's challenge is all about thinking positivity and making the most of your time while you're not at school .
Imagine looking into a cyrstal ball 3 months from now.
Draw or write what challenges you are facing, what positive changes you want to make and what might be different in 3 months time.
Try to focus on things that seem possible to achieve like starting a new hobby, learning a few words in a new language or getting better at some of your learning like reading or times tables.
I've done mine on the computer (on MS Word) as my paper is in the study where my husband is on a video call for work so I didn't want to disturb him! But you can do yours however you want.
I've included a picture of mine below if you want to have a look!
Please feel free to tell me about any of the wellbeing challenges you have done, I'd love to see what you're all doing in your free time! You can now e-mail me on Ealhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk to let me know (or to contact me or Mrs Harriott about any EAL home learning too)
Have a good day!

Hello everyone!
Firstly...HAPPY BIRTHDAY MISS WENDT!!! I know you'll all join me in wishing her a very happy birthday!
What have you got planned for today? We're ready for PE with Joe here (well, nearly ready), Asaph's decided to put on his school uniform because he's missing school so much, it actually is a bit strange to see him wearing it!
Let us know what you get up to, we'd love to see your learning for today!

Wow, Miss Wendt's Grasshopper Pie looks absolutely delicious! I've never heard of it, but it sounds like exactly the sort of thing I would love too...perhaps I will make it at the weekend?!
Anyway, back on to today's Sentence of the Day - click the link below to see my corrected sentence!

Hi from Miss Wendt!
I woke up very excited this morning because it's my birthday today! Although very different to the day I expected, I'm having a lovely day with lots of treats from my family and friends. Katy has made me on of my favourite ever desserts - it's called Grasshopper Pie. It has a chocolate cookie base, a minty mousse and a marshmallow cream top! It is very sweet, but delicious. And yes, I am having a piece for my breakfast!
Enough about me being an old lady, lets get on with the maths! Here are today's fluent in five questions. Remember, some of the questions may require a written method, others you may be able to work out in your head using mental strategies. I'll be back later with the answers, if you would like me to check your work then send an email to our special Y5 address!
Maths update!
Here are the answers for the fluent in five challenge. Thank you to Rhianna, Ini and Aden who emailed the answers for me to check - and well done to all 3 children who got them all correct! We do have some fabulous mathematicians in Year 5!
Thank you to everyone for all your lovely messages too! I really think I have had one of my best birthdays ever. My favourite surprise was a video call with Mrs Thewlis, Mrs Hughes, Miss Wolfenden and Miss Thornton and (best of all) the children in school! It was wonderful to see everyone again, I was blown away by the magical talents of Evodie!
Miss Brookes - Katy said she will happily make you something for your birthday in September!
--
Good morning from Miss Brookes!
A huge happy birthday to Miss Wendt! That dessert looks delicious (will Katy make some for all of us? Fingers crossed!) I hope we're all back in school in September when my birthday rolls around - I even have Miss Harris' birthday present sat on my kitchen table! I was supposed to give it to her 5 weeks ago.
Maybe you should send Miss Wendt a happy birthday email - perhaps it will make her smile even more than the grasshopper pie.
Speaking of smiling, all of these heart photographs we have received so far has put a huge smile on my face - and they have reminded me just how much I miss you all. 5HW have sent in 6 photos, and 5CB have sent in 6 photos! It's a tie at the minute, I wonder which class will send in all of their photographs first?
Anyway, onto today's learning.
There are two videos from me today, GVP and Science!
GVP is all about prefixes (one of the prefixes was in yesterday's sentence of the day, can you remember which it was?)
https://www.showme.com/sh?h=rDDGukC
Today's science is all about night and day, and the way that the Earth rotates on it's axis!

There's also a youtube video to do with science that I'd love for you guys to watch:

Happy Monday everyone!
I hope everyone had a lovely weekend and made the most of the lovely warm weather (I think it might be the last hot sun for a while although it seems nice so far this morning!)
Today's challenge is to do something that I have just discovered myself although my husband has been nagging me to do it for a while - Listen to a podcast.
A podcast is a bit like a radio show that you can download to your tablet, phone or laptop and listen to either while you relax or while you go for a walk. Some include music, some are educational, some entertain you and some are just good for helping you relax. You can listen to them with others or by yourself if you need a bit of me time.
This weekend I have been listening to one called Sounds of the 90s by Fearne Cotton that includes lot of music from the 90s as well as intervews with 90s pop stars. I've been listening to it while I go on my hour long walks every day and I think some of the teachers may also enjoy it!
Here are some podcasts I've found that I think you might all like, the links are under each description:
But Why: A pocast for curious kids
A podcast answering lots of questions that you may find interesting!

What if world
With wacky episode titles such as "What if Legos were alive?" and "What if sharks had legs?," this series takes ridiculous "what if" questions submitted by young listeners and turns them into a new story every two weeks.http://www.whatifworldpodcast.com/
Noodle Loaf
A delightful offering from a music education specialist and his co-host daughter will get kids of all ages singing, rhyming, moving, and engaging in all kinds of musical games. The segments, games, and songs are so silly and upbeat that the whole family will enjoy participating. Little listeners can even add their voice to the theme song in the podcast's electronically compiled kid's choir!

As you may have seen on the school twitter, or website, the staff at Ravensbury have created a video of us all creating a heart with our hands. Doesn't it look amazing? I was so happy that I had just straightened my hair when Mrs Thewlis asked for a photo! It was very good timing.
Now it is your turn. Can you send a picture of yourself (or yourself with your family!) creating a heart with your hands? I've attached one of some of the year 5&6 team to give you some ideas (you may not recognise me with my hair down! I'm the middle one on the right hand side ).
If we get enough photographs, Mrs Thewlis hopes to create a 'heart video' for each year group, or perhaps the entire school, so that we can see our friends again.
Please note, that the picture you send will be posted on the class blog and twitter page, so make sure that you are happy for it to go on there before you email us.

I can't wait to see what you send us!

Good morning everyone!
Last week's reading challenge was to read 3 books on reading plus! I am happy to announce that eleven of you managed to read at least 3 books, and 10 of you managed to score above 80% in all of your books! Well done!
This week, I am challenging you to read 5 books - that's one book every day this week!
Good luck!

Good morning everyone!
Did you have a lovely weekend? I hope you enjoyed the sunshine, we got the paddling pool out...although Livvi and Asaph sneaked the bubble bath outside and before we knew it, bubbles were everywhere (they used almost a whole bottle!!). I've checked the weather forecast and it's definitely turning chillier this week, with some rain forecast, so Miss Brookes will be happy!
Remember to email us today to show us your learning, we'd love to see!

Hello from Mrs Hodges!
Before we get into our Sentence of the Day, I'd like you to watch this clip of Chris Hadfield making a sandwich on board the International Space Station:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vio09T-8qA
I never get tired of watching these videos, I'm just in awe of the way scientists have developed ways to live in space!
Here's our sentence for today - I'd love to see your corrected sentence before I post my purple pen video later this afternoon!

Hello from Miss Wendt!
I hope you have all had a lovely weekend, I spent most of my weekend reading in my back garden, pretty perfect really! Even though I know Miss Brookes is looking forward to the rain, I am 100% a fan of the sunshine! It's my birthday tomorrow and even though it's going to be very different from what I had originally planned, I'm really looking forward to it. Katy is making my favourite dessert (I'll show you a picture tomorrow!) and I have a stack of lovely new books to read!
Anyway, on with today's maths! I've got 2 tasks today, a fluent in five and then a problem solving activity. I will post the answers later!
An update with the answers!
Well done to Kyro and Rhianna who answered all questions correctly! They both spotted the x0 and were able to calculate the division with a remainder! Well done both!
Rhianna had an excellent explanation for the problem too - she said that Tommy couldn't order the numbers using as 2 numbers had the same 3 digits - we would need to look at the value of the tens digit before we ordered them.

Good morning from Miss Brookes!
I am secretly looking forward to the rain, but I hope I didn't jinx the weather by asking for it! I thought I would cheer you all up with a story of what happened to me when I was sleeping last night (it'll make you forget about the weather I requested!)
It was around midnight, and I was woken up by a buzzing sound! I turned on my lamp and peered out from under my duvet...only to find a wasp buzzing around! Now I don't normally mind wasps, I'm not one that runs away from a wasp when outdoors, but there is something about being tired and it being dark - that makes a wasp flying around and buzzing in your ear, terrifying!
So, I did the only logical thing I could think of...I hid under my duvet! From my hiding spot, I sent a message to my family, saying something along the lines of 'help. There's a wasp in my room. I'm hiding under my duvet. It is too warm under here' shortly followed by a 'why has no one come to rescue me?' I found out this morning from my mum that she was awake, heard the phone ping, and assumed it wasn't to do with her!
I sent a message out to my friends, and Ms Thornton gave me a tip! She said to use hairspray and tissue to get rid of the wasp. So I readied myself, climbed out from underneath my hiding spot, and turned on the main light. I could still hear the buzzing, but no matter how hard I looked - I couldn't find the wasp anywhere! I then opened my bedroom window as wide as it could go, as well as the blinds (which made my room very light), in hopes that the wasp would leave. I eventually fell asleep again, cocooned underneath my duvet...only to be woken up at 6.30 by a cat screeching in my garden! (I don't even own a cat).
I can still hear a buzzing noise, and my heart is still racing, but I think the wasp has gone now.
Anyway, I thought that story would cheer you up since I've asked for the rubbish weather!
Onto GVP. Today's focus is all about suffixes - and how we use them to convert nouns and adjectives into a verb. Before you watch the video, can you remember what a noun, adjective, verb and suffix is?

Enjoy your Monday!
Mrs Ranyard has discovered an exciting podcast for us all to listen to - The Space Race!
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m000hmmd
It's only 15 minutes long, and I highly recommend it!
Date: 24th Apr 2020 @ 4:01pm
It's time to celebrate all of the hard work you have done this week. Well done 5CB, I'm very proud of you!
We are winning timestable rockstars so far - we're just over 2,000 points ahead of 5HW! Well done!
A huge congratulations to the children who completed this week's reading challenge by managing to read 3 or more books! You are all owed a hot chocolate when we go back to school.
The winners are:
Sam (with 10 books!)
Denico (with 8 books!)
Dylan (with 4 books!)
Victoria (with 3 books!)
Tia (with 3 books!)
You only had to read 3 books, so well done everyone. Remember, the aim is to try and score 80% in all of the comprehension questions.
Thank you for everyone who has emailed pictures of their to me this week - and it's lovely to see some of you completing the wellbeing challenges as well!
I have to say, Jennifer's GVP made me laugh because all of her sentences were about the spider that attacked me! (Thankfully it was very small, and I didn't drop the IPad!) Below are some pictures of the amazing work I have seen.
Well done to the following children, who are also oustanding learners this week:
Jessica
Jennifer
Angelica
Jackson
Denico
I can't wait to see more of your wonderful work next week!
Have a fabulous weekend 5CB, you thoroughly deserve it!

Good morning everyone, another lovely sunny day! I can't wait to get out there in the sun for a bit.
Fot the last day of the week I'm giving you a slightly different wellbeing challenge today and it's something that always makes me feel happy and a bit better if I'm feeling a bit low.
Today's challenge is to do something nice for someone. Here are some ideas below although feel free to do one of your own ideas!
1. Read or tell a story to a younger brother or sister
2. Tidy your room
3. Do a chore or job for someone at home
4. Give someone a compliment
5. Share a toy or some food with someone at home
6. Make someone a present, picture or card
7. Offer to help an adult with the cooking or washing up
8. Write someone a poem or story
9. Tell someone a joke
10. Phone a friend or send them a nice message
See how many of the 10 you can do and remember to let us know what you have done!
I'm going to do some baking for my husband for my good deed and maybe make him a nice dinner as well. In fact, I might go and take him a cup of tea while he's doing his work! :-)
Have a lovely weekend,
Mrs Glover
