This week, we invited parents and carers into school to make our maya tortillas! We first wrote our instructions using imperative verbs, fronted adverbials, numbers for listing and bullet points.
We followed these instructions carefully and had to explain to the parents/carers who visited how to make a Maya tortilla. The recipes have also been sent home in a Maya-inspired cook book. We're sure that over the half term, lots of parents will want to make the Maya tortillas at home!
Holiday homework is being sent home today, and the autumn 2 overview for parents.
Have a great break!

This half term we have been learning all about special celebrations 🎉
The children have been learning about big world celebrations as well as celebrations that we celebrate just with our friends and friends at home.
This week the children have been preparing to celebrate Rosie, our home corner baby's, birthday. They have been counting down the days on our calendar, making party hats, party menus and shopping lists and decorating our classroom.
Today we finally ended the countdown and celebrated Rosies birthday. We sang, danced, played games and had a great time.

Keira said, "The tortilla was tasty, I enjoyed putting the cocao nibs on the tortilla."
Isla said, "My mum hated the taste of the tortilla, but yum yum, I loved it."

This week the children have been learning all about harvest. They learned about the different fruit and vegetables that will be harvested at this time of year and even learned a song about the combine harvester that the farmers use to harvest their crops.
The children made their own harvest fruit and vegetable crowns and worked together to make an amazing red combine harvester.

What are we learning about next half term?
Date: 18th Oct 2023 @ 9:37am
We have had a great time learning lots of new things this half term. We are so proud of the children and how much they have grown in the past 7 weeks.
Here is our overview for next half term so you can see everything that we are about to learn about.

In science this half term we have been learning about body parts and what our senses are. We learnt about the job of each sense and which body part it was associated with. We used this song to help us:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzqx39K2omc
We carried out a Smell Pot investigation where we predicted what was in each pot using our sense of smell. We smelt each pot and then discussed what it might be and whether we liked each smell or not. We recorded our findings in a table and discovered what each smell actually was. We predicted correctly for some of the smells!

Last week we had a visitor called Rebaz who came into school. He was a freestyle footballer who was amazing at doing tricks with a football. He showed off his skills in an assembly on Thursday and then we got a chance to work with him later in the day. He showed us four different tricks that we could do with a football.
It was lots of fun!!!

Hello,
I cannot believe how hard all the children have worked this week. They have made Mrs Cooper and I very proud!
In English, we have been learning about writing recounts and to help us write a personal recount we went on a walk around Clayton. The children used their big googly eyes to find human and physical features and local landmarks. They used their observation skills to sketch what they could see too !
They found; The National Bike centre, Asda, the canal, Philips Park, Flip out, two bridges, Decathlon, trees, bushes, cars, buses, roads, pavements and lots more!!!!!!!!!!!! We were so lucky with the weather too. It was a warm sunny day and the leaves were falling from the trees. We even got to play on a pretend tractor.
As part of mental health week. The children rehearsed and then performed It's a beautiful day. They also created some mental health mindfulness colourings that we are going to join together to create a mural for the wall outside the year 2 classrooms. Watch the video below to see our amazing Ravy children in action.
Rebaz, the freestyle footballer also came into school to work with the children. They learnt how to perform some football tricks and got to watch him demonstrate his skills! The children absolutely loved having him in school. Hopefully we will get to see him next year too
Photographs to be added!
Thanks
Miss Wolfenden and Mrs Cooper

One Day at Ravensbury Community Primary, there was something strange going on! In Year 1HB there were many crimes committed! Oh No! There's a Pea on the loose!
Year 1 have been reading the story Supertato and have been describing the character of the Evil Pea. We have been using adjectives to describe his naughty behaviours such as sneaky, cheeky, unkind and devilish! Take a look at the terrible crimes he committed in Year 1!

We have such a busy week this week in 6JT!
On Tuesday, we had a workshop about the Windrush. We found out some facts about the HMT Windrush Empire and acted out some events.
On Wednesday we had an exciting day as Rabaz, the freestyle footballer, came back into school to do a showcase assembly and a skills workshop after.
All week year 6 have been doing assessments in maths, reading and Grammer, today we looked at numbers up to 1, 000, 000 and were able to explore place value using a human numberline.
Also during our indoor PE slot we tried to beat the time from last year doing the 'Wall Sit Challenge. They all tried really hard and we stretched after to help the muscles recover.

Apologies for the delay in getting these photos up. Its taken me a while to establish permission.
We had a great trip to Quarry Bank Mill in September. We went earlier than we would normally go but it has actually made a huge difference to the children's understanding of the Victorians. This has been so useful for their reading and writing around the factories and Oliver Twist.
They were able to experience the lives of an apprentice at the factory - where they slept, what they ate and where they learned. They also saw the process of how cotton was made on the huge (and noisy) looms and then finished the day with a dressing up session!

Its nearly the half term holidays!
We have had such a busy week full of different activities - a Windrush workshop as part of black history week, a freestyle football session with Rebaz and our first art session of year 5. It was so lovely to see so many children getting stuck in and trying out new skills.
In writing, we have been planning our factory inspector reports. The class seem to really enjoy using their 'posh' voices in formal tone and they have worked hard to learn some higher level vocabulary such as observe instead of watch and gather instead of get.
In reading, we have been enjoying non-fiction texts about victorian factories to inform our writing. We even had one that was all about Quarry Bank Mill!
In maths, we have been applying our learning of tenths and hundredths to money. We just need to work on securing our understanding of change by counting forwards on a number line.
Golden time this week was creative week. The class chose some colouring sheets to complete or to make a card to take home. We had a great time but I'm sure they're looking foward to popcorn and film golden time next week!
Have a great weekend!

This week has been very exciting!
On Thursday, we were taught some fantastic football skills and tricks by Rabaz! We needed to be resilient, but we could all share some tricks by the end of the session.
On Friday, we met Nathaniel who taught us all about Windrush as part of our Black History Month celebrations.

Yesterday, we had a very exciting visitor come to visit our school and he was a freestyle footballer called Raz! In our assembly, he demonstrated his amazing tricks which were very exciting to watch! He explained that he trains for 3 hours, 5 days a week! He told us that he never gives up and always keeps trying and that's what we should do when we want to be really great at something! In the afternoon, we all had a chance to learn some super football tricks and we had lots of fun!

This week Rebaz came back into school to visit the children. We watch him perform some fantastic tricks in assembly and got the chance to ask him questions. Then we got a chance to have a workshop with Rebaz and practise some tricks ourselves. We learnt that every trick we tried requires lots of practise.

This week we have been learning lots of new words to describe how animals move in the story 'Monkey and Me'. Verbs are words which describe what a character is doing.
Here are the words we know now:
flap waddle sway swing jump
Can you guess which animals move in this way by looking at these photos?
If you need some help CLICK HERE to listen to the story

We were blown away with the support we received last Friday for our 'Sports Day Meet & Greet'. The children were amazing, as always, and there were so many positive comments from the adults who joined us. We're so happy you can see the amount of progress the children have made settling in at Ravensbury.
Each key worker group rotated around the activities and had lots of fun moving, dancing, singing, playing games and making hand prints.
Here are some of the photos 😃

Another busy week finished off!
In English, we have started a new unit about formal reports. We looked at (a simplified version of) Ravensbury's last ofsted report to understand some of the formal language we come across in reports. We also enjoyed a little role play as if we were in a factory which was being inspected.
In maths, we have finished our units on place value. The children have really worked hard to cement their understanding of tenths and hundredths in decimals and the value of different digits in decimal numbers.
5HC seem to really enjoy their dance lessons this half term too - we are working hard on developing a dance to reflect movements you might find in a factory.
For golden time this week, we got out lots and lots of lego! The children were free to build whatever they wanted but if they were lacking inspiration, I set them four challenges - build an animal, build something that flies, build a container but in only one colour and build the tallest tower. There were some brilliant ideas, I've included some photos below.

The children have been very busy with their learning so far this year! Here are some of our highlights so far this term!
- Quarry Bank Mill: Year 5 had a wonderful time on our trip to Quarry Bank Mill. The children loved learning about how the mill was used in Victorian times and finding our about the lives of the children who worked there. They visited the Victorian school house and living quarters, tried some of the different jobs and saw the noisy machinery in action!
- In Maths we have been learning about Place Value, including with decimal numbers.
- In Reading the children really enjoyed our text study of Oliver Twist, especially finding out about the different charcters! They used their understanding of the text to create some wonderful character descriptions in their Writing Books!
- We are continuing to discover more about the Victorians in our Connected Curriculum lessons, and have enjoyed finding out and creating a timeline of the main events of the Victorian era.
- In Science, we are continuing our work on Forces. The class really enjoyed discussing, predicting and exploring the effect of gravity on different objects!
- We have had a visitor in school to discuss Online Safety.
- Finally, everyone has worked very hard on practicing their handwriting and presentation in their new Year 5 books.
This week, we look forawrd to some exciting additional sessions including Art, Black History Month workshops and Freestyle Football... it will be another busy and exciting week in Year 5!

Welcome to a new year in 5JB!
The children have been working hard to get used to our new routines and timetables - here's some useful information for our school week in 5JB:
- PE days are Tuesday and Thursday. Please make sure children arrive in school in correct PE kit (black bottoms and plain white top, school jumper or plain black PE sweatshirt, sensible sports trainers, hair tied back and earrings removed).
- Bookbags should be brought in everyday and reading logs are checked on a Wednesday and Friday. Please support your child with their daily reading and sign their Reading Record each time.
- Homework is sent out and handed in on Fridays.
- Our weekly spelling test will take place each Thursday.

Beware Evil Veggies are on the loose!!!
Date: 8th Oct 2023 @ 5:00pm
What a week this has been! We discovered some vegetables that were trapped in a brown sack which mysteriously came to our classroom on Monday. In the sack we found some vegtables that were trapped along with a letter. We had to describe which evil character would do such a thing! We designed our own evil vegetables, described them thinking of adjectives to describe their appearance and personality.
A second letter came the next day thanking us for describing the evil vegetables really well. We were left with the story 'Supertato' to read and learn all about the nasty character called the 'Evil Pea!' Miss Riley and Reception children came to warn us that something evil has been in their class doing lots of nasty things. This thing has ripped a sound mat! Broken some toys and scrunched up some children's work! We decided to warn everyone and write some Wanted posters describing the Evil Pea's appearance and personality.
On Friday during Golden Time we decided that we needed to make some Evil Pea traps just in case this awful vegetable came back!
Wow! What a week of learning in our writing sessions!!!
