Year 5EG: Blog items
Date: 29th Apr 2020 @ 10:35am
Hello everyone,
It's a rather miserable looking Wednesday out there so my wellbeing challenge today is an indoor one.
It's actually quite a simple challenge today; I'd simply like you to do some colouring. Colouring is a lovely relaxing activity that you can do on your own for some me-time or together with a family member to make it a more sociable activity.
I think most of you were given some colouring pages when we finished school but if you've already used these and don't have any more at home then good news, there is a website where you can do online colouring:
https://www.online-coloring.com/
Or you could always draw something to colour! Anything you like.
I have a new Enchanted Forest colouring book that my husband bought me (pictured below) that I'm going to do a bit of colouring in later, maybe while I listen to a podcast or to some music to have a bit of a break from staring at a screen. I'll post a picture of my efforts tomorrow.
Remember to send in pictures of your challenges to EALhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Past challenges
A big thanks to Roderigo from Year 1 who sent me a picture of his crystal ball challenge from yesterday, some fantastic goals there!

Good morning!
How is everyone today? We're up and ready for PE with Joe, and I think Livvi and Asaph have chosen to do some Science, Writing and Art for today. We'd love to see your completed activities for today, remember to email us!
Thank you to all the children who have sent us a heart photograph so far! They are: Jennifer, Denico, Victoria, Ivory, William, Zain, Alissia, Maddison, Aden, Rhianna, Lilly-Anne and Taissa! Six children in each class...I wonder which class can send them in first? y5homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Mrs Hodges here!
Hello! Two activities from me today - the first is the Sentence of the Day, which is still to do with the YouTube video I posted on Monday where Chris Hadfield shows us how he makes a sandwich on board the International Space Station. Click on the link in Monday's blog post if you haven't watched it yet!
Here's today's sentence!
https://www.showme.com/sh?h=afialqi
The second activity is working on our writing and vocabulary. I've attached a document called, "The Visitor". First, I'd like you to have a look at the section called, "Question Time!" to get you thinking about the image you can see. Secondly, I'd like you to read the "Sick Sentences". At the moment, the two sentences given are not very detailed and use repeated vocabulary to describe the robot. Can you improve the sentences by describing what you can see in more detail? Remember that skill we've been practising in school - show not tell. How can you show the reader than the robot is big without simply telling the reader? See if you can write 3 or 4 sentences, including these things in some of your sentences:
* relative clause
* 2a sentence
* -ly, -ing or -ed sentence opener
* conjunction to extend the sentence
I can't wait to see the sentences you create! If you have time today, there's a lovely activity on the same document asking you to design your own robot and describe it. If you fancy doing this too, I'll be very impressed!
Thank you to those children who have emailed their Sentence of the Day in today! Click on the link below to see my purple pen!

Good morning from Miss Wendt!
After a very exciting time yesterday, today is back to normal. I've still got my balloons up though!
I thought we'd try a challenge today; this will practice sequencing and counting on/back in 10's. Have a look and I will post the answers later.
Have a look at Aden's work for a good explanation of the right answers! If you count back or forward in 10's, the ones digit will never change -
43, 53, 63, 73, 83
119, 109, 99, 89, 79, 69, 59
I've also attached a blank multiplication square, just in case you want to practice a timed challenge at home. Get someone else in your house to time you, and email me your times! We can create a leaderboard to see who can complete it the quickest!

Good Morning Year 5! From Miss Brookes
I hope you all enjoyed your Monday, I was especially happy when it rained as I enjoyed an impromptu 'family film night' with my parents, while video-calling my sister as she watched the same movie! I apologise to everyone that wanted sunshine, I may have jinxed it as it's looking chilly today too!
A huge thank you to everyone that has completed their Connected Curriculum challenge so far - be sure to look out for your photographs in Friday's celebration post.
Well done to Aden who has already read 5 books this week! There are quite a few of you who are almost there as well.
Now, onto today's GVP.
Today, we are looking at adverbials. I even included a fronted adverbial at the start of that sentence, can you spot what it is?
Don't forget to share your adverbial word mat with us, and keep it safe so we can use it when we go back to school. You can use the template attached, or create your own - whether that's on a computer or piece of paper (if you do it on a computer/tablet, email the document across to us and we will keep it safe until school returns). When we get back to school, we can laminate them to stop them from getting damaged, and then use them in our writing lessons! I'm looking forward to seeing how creative you can be.

Enjoy your Wednesday!

Good morning everyone,
Today's challenge is all about thinking positivity and making the most of your time while you're not at school .
Imagine looking into a cyrstal ball 3 months from now.
Draw or write what challenges you are facing, what positive changes you want to make and what might be different in 3 months time.
Try to focus on things that seem possible to achieve like starting a new hobby, learning a few words in a new language or getting better at some of your learning like reading or times tables.
I've done mine on the computer (on MS Word) as my paper is in the study where my husband is on a video call for work so I didn't want to disturb him! But you can do yours however you want.
I've included a picture of mine below if you want to have a look!
Please feel free to tell me about any of the wellbeing challenges you have done, I'd love to see what you're all doing in your free time! You can now e-mail me on Ealhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk to let me know (or to contact me or Mrs Harriott about any EAL home learning too)
Have a good day!
Mrs Glover

Hello everyone!
Firstly...HAPPY BIRTHDAY MISS WENDT!!! I know you'll all join me in wishing her a very happy birthday!
What have you got planned for today? We're ready for PE with Joe here (well, nearly ready), Asaph's decided to put on his school uniform because he's missing school so much, it actually is a bit strange to see him wearing it!
Let us know what you get up to, we'd love to see your learning for today!

Mrs Hodges here!
Are you ready for today's Sentence of the Day? Here we go!

Remember to check back later to compare your corrected sentence with my purple pen!
Good afternoon Year 5!
Wow, Miss Wendt's Grasshopper Pie looks absolutely delicious! I've never heard of it, but it sounds like exactly the sort of thing I would love too...perhaps I will make it at the weekend?!
Anyway, back on to today's Sentence of the Day - click the link below to see my corrected sentence!

Hi from Miss Wendt!
I woke up very excited this morning because it's my birthday today! Although very different to the day I expected, I'm having a lovely day with lots of treats from my family and friends. Katy has made me on of my favourite ever desserts - it's called Grasshopper Pie. It has a chocolate cookie base, a minty mousse and a marshmallow cream top! It is very sweet, but delicious. And yes, I am having a piece for my breakfast!
Enough about me being an old lady, lets get on with the maths! Here are today's fluent in five questions. Remember, some of the questions may require a written method, others you may be able to work out in your head using mental strategies. I'll be back later with the answers, if you would like me to check your work then send an email to our special Y5 address!
Maths update!
Here are the answers for the fluent in five challenge. Thank you to Rhianna, Ini and Aden who emailed the answers for me to check - and well done to all 3 children who got them all correct! We do have some fabulous mathematicians in Year 5!
Thank you to everyone for all your lovely messages too! I really think I have had one of my best birthdays ever. My favourite surprise was a video call with Mrs Thewlis, Mrs Hughes, Miss Wolfenden and Miss Thornton and (best of all) the children in school! It was wonderful to see everyone again, I was blown away by the magical talents of Evodie!
Miss Brookes - Katy said she will happily make you something for your birthday in September!
--
Good morning from Miss Brookes!
A huge happy birthday to Miss Wendt! That dessert looks delicious (will Katy make some for all of us? Fingers crossed!) I hope we're all back in school in September when my birthday rolls around - I even have Miss Harris' birthday present sat on my kitchen table! I was supposed to give it to her 5 weeks ago.
Maybe you should send Miss Wendt a happy birthday email - perhaps it will make her smile even more than the grasshopper pie.
Speaking of smiling, all of these heart photographs we have received so far has put a huge smile on my face - and they have reminded me just how much I miss you all. 5HW have sent in 6 photos, and 5CB have sent in 6 photos! It's a tie at the minute, I wonder which class will send in all of their photographs first?
Anyway, onto today's learning.
There are two videos from me today, GVP and Science!
GVP is all about prefixes (one of the prefixes was in yesterday's sentence of the day, can you remember which it was?)
https://www.showme.com/sh?h=rDDGukC
Today's science is all about night and day, and the way that the Earth rotates on it's axis!
https://www.showme.com/sh?h=MHRMarw
There's also a youtube video to do with science that I'd love for you guys to watch:

Happy Monday everyone!
I hope everyone had a lovely weekend and made the most of the lovely warm weather (I think it might be the last hot sun for a while although it seems nice so far this morning!)
Today's challenge is to do something that I have just discovered myself although my husband has been nagging me to do it for a while - Listen to a podcast.
A podcast is a bit like a radio show that you can download to your tablet, phone or laptop and listen to either while you relax or while you go for a walk. Some include music, some are educational, some entertain you and some are just good for helping you relax. You can listen to them with others or by yourself if you need a bit of me time.
This weekend I have been listening to one called Sounds of the 90s by Fearne Cotton that includes lot of music from the 90s as well as intervews with 90s pop stars. I've been listening to it while I go on my hour long walks every day and I think some of the teachers may also enjoy it!
Here are some podcasts I've found that I think you might all like, the links are under each description:
But Why: A pocast for curious kids
A podcast answering lots of questions that you may find interesting!
http://digital.vpr.net/programs/why-podcast-curious-kids
Storytime
10 - 15 minute stories (mostly for little ones)
http://bedtime.fm/storytime
What if world
With wacky episode titles such as "What if Legos were alive?" and "What if sharks had legs?," this series takes ridiculous "what if" questions submitted by young listeners and turns them into a new story every two weeks.http://www.whatifworldpodcast.com/
Noodle Loaf
A delightful offering from a music education specialist and his co-host daughter will get kids of all ages singing, rhyming, moving, and engaging in all kinds of musical games. The segments, games, and songs are so silly and upbeat that the whole family will enjoy participating. Little listeners can even add their voice to the theme song in the podcast's electronically compiled kid's choir!

Be Calm on Ahway Island
Includes soothing stories and mindulness techniques

As you may have seen on the school twitter, or website, the staff at Ravensbury have created a video of us all creating a heart with our hands. Doesn't it look amazing? I was so happy that I had just straightened my hair when Mrs Thewlis asked for a photo! It was very good timing.
Now it is your turn. Can you send a picture of yourself (or yourself with your family!) creating a heart with your hands? I've attached one of some of the year 5&6 team to give you some ideas (you may not recognise me with my hair down! I'm the middle one on the right hand side ).
If we get enough photographs, Mrs Thewlis hopes to create a 'heart video' for each year group, or perhaps the entire school, so that we can see our friends again.
Please note, that the picture you send will be posted on the class blog and twitter page, so make sure that you are happy for it to go on there before you email us.

I can't wait to see what you send us!

Good morning everyone!
Last week's reading challenge was to read 3 books on reading plus! I am happy to announce that eleven of you managed to read at least 3 books, and 10 of you managed to score above 80% in all of your books! Well done!
This week, I am challenging you to read 5 books - that's one book every day this week!
Good luck!
Miss Brookes

Good morning everyone!
Did you have a lovely weekend? I hope you enjoyed the sunshine, we got the paddling pool out...although Livvi and Asaph sneaked the bubble bath outside and before we knew it, bubbles were everywhere (they used almost a whole bottle!!). I've checked the weather forecast and it's definitely turning chillier this week, with some rain forecast, so Miss Brookes will be happy!
Remember to email us today to show us your learning, we'd love to see!

Hello from Mrs Hodges!
Before we get into our Sentence of the Day, I'd like you to watch this clip of Chris Hadfield making a sandwich on board the International Space Station:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vio09T-8qA
I never get tired of watching these videos, I'm just in awe of the way scientists have developed ways to live in space!
Here's our sentence for today - I'd love to see your corrected sentence before I post my purple pen video later this afternoon!
https://www.showme.com/sh?h=Swi6yyu
Good afternoon Year 5!
How did you get on with today's sentence? Here's my corrected version for you to compare to yours!

Hello from Miss Wendt!
I hope you have all had a lovely weekend, I spent most of my weekend reading in my back garden, pretty perfect really! Even though I know Miss Brookes is looking forward to the rain, I am 100% a fan of the sunshine! It's my birthday tomorrow and even though it's going to be very different from what I had originally planned, I'm really looking forward to it. Katy is making my favourite dessert (I'll show you a picture tomorrow!) and I have a stack of lovely new books to read!
Anyway, on with today's maths! I've got 2 tasks today, a fluent in five and then a problem solving activity. I will post the answers later!
An update with the answers!
Well done to Kyro and Rhianna who answered all questions correctly! They both spotted the x0 and were able to calculate the division with a remainder! Well done both!
Rhianna had an excellent explanation for the problem too - she said that Tommy couldn't order the numbers using as 2 numbers had the same 3 digits - we would need to look at the value of the tens digit before we ordered them.
--
Good morning from Miss Brookes!
I am secretly looking forward to the rain, but I hope I didn't jinx the weather by asking for it! I thought I would cheer you all up with a story of what happened to me when I was sleeping last night (it'll make you forget about the weather I requested!)
It was around midnight, and I was woken up by a buzzing sound! I turned on my lamp and peered out from under my duvet...only to find a wasp buzzing around! Now I don't normally mind wasps, I'm not one that runs away from a wasp when outdoors, but there is something about being tired and it being dark - that makes a wasp flying around and buzzing in your ear, terrifying!
So, I did the only logical thing I could think of...I hid under my duvet! From my hiding spot, I sent a message to my family, saying something along the lines of 'help. There's a wasp in my room. I'm hiding under my duvet. It is too warm under here' shortly followed by a 'why has no one come to rescue me?' I found out this morning from my mum that she was awake, heard the phone ping, and assumed it wasn't to do with her!
I sent a message out to my friends, and Ms Thornton gave me a tip! She said to use hairspray and tissue to get rid of the wasp. So I readied myself, climbed out from underneath my hiding spot, and turned on the main light. I could still hear the buzzing, but no matter how hard I looked - I couldn't find the wasp anywhere! I then opened my bedroom window as wide as it could go, as well as the blinds (which made my room very light), in hopes that the wasp would leave. I eventually fell asleep again, cocooned underneath my duvet...only to be woken up at 6.30 by a cat screeching in my garden! (I don't even own a cat).
I can still hear a buzzing noise, and my heart is still racing, but I think the wasp has gone now.
Anyway, I thought that story would cheer you up since I've asked for the rubbish weather!
Onto GVP. Today's focus is all about suffixes - and how we use them to convert nouns and adjectives into a verb. Before you watch the video, can you remember what a noun, adjective, verb and suffix is?
https://www.showme.com/sh?h=IEzpnwu
Enjoy your Monday!
Mrs Ranyard has discovered an exciting podcast for us all to listen to - The Space Race!
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m000hmmd
It's only 15 minutes long, and I highly recommend it!
Date: 24th Apr 2020 @ 4:20pm
Good afternoon everyone!

Thank you to Maddison, Lilly-Anne, Alissia and Rhianna for your emails!
Well done to those children who have been completing reading challenges on Reading Plus! A very big well done to Rhianna who has read over 12000 words! Keep it up Rhianna!
We have a whole range of activities that have taken place - growing tomatoes, learning Spanish and science and writing postcards!
Have a look below and see what 5HW have been doing!

Good morning everyone, another lovely sunny day! I can't wait to get out there in the sun for a bit.
Fot the last day of the week I'm giving you a slightly different wellbeing challenge today and it's something that always makes me feel happy and a bit better if I'm feeling a bit low.
Today's challenge is to do something nice for someone. Here are some ideas below although feel free to do one of your own ideas!
1. Read or tell a story to a younger brother or sister
2. Tidy your room
3. Do a chore or job for someone at home
4. Give someone a compliment
5. Share a toy or some food with someone at home
6. Make someone a present, picture or card
7. Offer to help an adult with the cooking or washing up
8. Write someone a poem or story
9. Tell someone a joke
10. Phone a friend or send them a nice message
See how many of the 10 you can do and remember to let us know what you have done!
I'm going to do some baking for my husband for my good deed and maybe make him a nice dinner as well. In fact, I might go and take him a cup of tea while he's doing his work! :-)
Have a lovely weekend,
Mrs Glover
Date: 24th Apr 2020 @ 10:06am
Good Morning Year 5!
Every week I am seeing more and more of you on Reading Plus! Well done to you all for working so hard. The winners this week for reading the most books, and the most words are:
Most Lessons Completed: Sam (at 10 books! Well done)
Most Words Read: Rhianna (12,596 words! Goodness me! Is there a favourite 'new' word you discovered?)
5HW have 5 wins so far, whereas 5CB have 3. Come on 5CB!
Don't forget to check your individual class blogs later today, where we will announce who has successfully completed this weeks reading challenge.
Well done everyone,
Miss Brookes

Good morning everyone! I just cannot get over this consistently sunny weather we're having! I think we might have a little BBQ this evening, and Livvi really wants to do some baking. We've found a recipe for rhubarb pots that she'd really like to try, and we're very lucky because we have some rhubarb growing in our garden. Maybe I'll post a photo of our baking results later!
We'd love to hear what you're getting up to today, and we LOVE seeing photos of your learning from the daily activities - watch out for the blog post later on today celebrating that brilliant learning!

Mrs Hodges here!
Here's the final Sentence of the Day for this week!
https://www.showme.com/sh?h=9BRFvKi
Remember to check back to see my purple pen sentence later on!
Good afternoon! How did you get on with today's sentence? Click the link below to compare my corrected one to yours! Just about to start making the rhubarb pots with Livvi and Asaph, I'll let you know how I get on later!
https://www.showme.com/sh?h=Em3HJR2
Right, rhubarb pots are made! I've attached a photo - what do you think? I'm quite pleased with them, and I can already tell you from the sneaky taste I had, they're very delicious! I loved getting an email from Rhianna showing a cake she baked - have you been learning to cook or bake any new things?
--
Good Morning from Miss Wendt!
I have to say Mrs Hodges, I do love sweet treats featuring rhubarb - It's one of my favourite fruits! You are very lucky having rhubarb in your garden.
It's been lovely to see and read all of the emails this week, we will be posting some of your wonderful work later on today!
On with the maths...
Today I've got a fluent in five AND a challenge for you! I enjoyed doing the find all possibilities on Wednesday so I have included another of those.
Remember to email your answers to y5homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Happy Friday everyone from Miss Brookes!
I have to say from reading these posts, baking does sound quite appealing! Though my brother has kindly been doing our essential shopping for us and his 'substitute' items for something like flour, would be something you can't even bake with, knowing my brother! I've got all of the equipment and none of the ingredients - Oh well, I will ask and we will see what turns up
I get so excited when my phone pings and it's the year 5 email with all of your fabulous work - well done everyone, I can't wait to see what else you get done while at home!
I have also had a go at one of the Connected Curriculum challenges. My mum has a free app on her IPad called 'Happy Colour by Numbers.' It gives you different pictures, and an array of colours. Every time you click on a colour, it highlights the area that needs to be coloured in - and then you tap on it and like magic, the colour appears! Each day there's a daily challenge, and on Wednesday my Mum said "this one looks a little bit complicated, can you do it for me?" Being the wonderful daughter I am, of course I offered to do the painting! Little did I know, it was going to be a Space painting of the Solar System! I've attached a picture of it for you all to see, as well as a video where you can see a speeded up version of how I painted it!
I can't wait to see your Connected Curriuclum challenges!
Now onto GVP. Can you remember the four key areas we looked at this week? Today is a recap on these areas, followed by a quiz for you all (which I have attached).
https://www.showme.com/sh?h=tOGi4My
I will post a video explaining the answers at around 3pm today, so good luck!
Good afternoon everyone!
Here are the answers for today's GVP quiz. How did you do?

Hi everyone,
I hope everyone is finding ways to enjoy this amazing weather, I don't think we've ever had such a nice April before!
So today's wellbeing challenge is another way to make the most of the weather and get out in your gardens and do some gardening!
Here are some nice ideas for things to do that you don't really need many resources for: https://www.gardenersworld.com/how-to/grow-plants/10-gardening-projects-for-kids/
I bet you'll already have a lot of the things in your house or garden or you could collect some of them like twigs etc while out on a walk (make sure you wash your hands after if you do that!) My favourite is the fairy garden.
Alternatively you could plant some seeds from something that you've just eatedn such as tomato seeds.
If you don't have a garden then why not design and draw your own garden (or fairy garden!) instead? You could maybe try and re-create it when you're older and have your own garden!
I have a balcony rather than a garden and had never done any gardening until a few weeks ago but below are a couple of pictures of the things I've planted! I'm watering them every day and the sun is making most of them grow nice and tall.
Have fun and remember to let us know what you've done!

World Book Day saw the launch of our modern Greece connected curriculum topic. The children tasted a range of food from Greece including olives, hummus and pitta bread. There were mixed responses from the children with many liking some of the new flavours but others (such as the figs) proving slightly less popular!
Date: 15th Mar 2018 @ 11:57am
This week is Science week at Ravensbury School so to mark it, we carried out a science experiment linked to our human timeline topic to test the hypothesis that a person’s arm span is equal to their height.
The children found that it is sometimes spot on. Some children had exactly the same height and arm span measurements! For those who didn’t, the class agreed that they were broadly the same.
The children demonstrated excellent measuring skills and they planned the experiment independently; deciding to measure 5 children before reaching a conclusion; recording the results and summing them up. Well done 5HC!
Testing for solubility in water
Date: 15th Mar 2018 @ 11:55am
This half term in science, we are investigating how mixtures can be made or separated. In this lesson, children tested which materials were soluble in water and which ones weren’t. There were some brilliant examples of scientific vocabulary use including soluble, solubility, solution and solvent.
Date: 15th Mar 2018 @ 11:54am
Welcome back 5HC! We hope you have all had a lovely holiday.
Yesterday was the launch of our next connected curriculum topic – Bridges! At first glance, this may not be the most interesting of topics but we have lots of exciting opportunities and activities planned to enhance the children’s understanding.
We will still be linking this to our previous topic of the Victorians. The Victorian period was full of amazing inventors and many created ground-breaking bridges. As part of this, we will be visiting Quarry Bank Mill to research the Industrial Revolution.
Our launch involved making sturdy bridges from spaghetti and marshmallows. The class had a go at creating bridges using triangles – the strongest of all shapes but they children found them harder to create than expected. They may need a little more exploring of bridge types!
Date: 15th Mar 2018 @ 11:53am
What a fabulous day year 5 had yesterday. We had a very knowledgeable visitor in school to tell us all about the Victorian period and how there were great changes in science and industry.
In the morning, we looked at Victorian inventions such as the electric telegraph and how it was used to send Morse code messages. We found out that people first had their photo taken during that era and we had our photos taken on a lens which was 137 years old!
In the afternoon, we learned about how the steam engine was developed and how everyone was involved in finding the most efficient and safe design. We saw a model of the winning engine called ‘the Rocket’ and we powered it around a small model railway.

Year 4 and 5 at Ravensbury School are very lucky to have been given the opportunity to help decorate a bench which is going to be placed in Manchester city centre to encourage people to enjoy and discuss different stories. Yesterday, year explored the book ‘Lost Happy Endings’ with Mrs. McAffer and sketched out some pictures from it. We obviously have some budding artists in this class! Everyone considered the feelings and events in the book very carefully and we had some fantastic discussions about different theories we came up with.
Next week, we will be moving the sketches on to the bench. Watch this space!

This half term, 5HC are learning about Spain in the connected curriculum. They are realising that it is a fantastic country with lots of exciting and interesting cultural aspects to it.
To give them a ‘flavour’ of Spain and what their learning might include this half term, we started it all off with a super learning afternoon of making patatas bravas. Here are some of the things the children said about it:
“It tasted amazing!”
“I wish I lived in Spain!”
