Nursery: Blog items

This week the children will be combining their knowledge of colour mixing with number and size when completing Bubble Maths challenges. Adults station themselves at each challenge and the children choose which they access.
- Bubble Machine Race to 5 - Ready, steady, go. Pop 5 bubbles.
- Popping Bubbles Counting - Blow bubbles to settle into the water tray. When one pops count it. How many bubbles were there?
- Bubble Colour Mixing Counting - Create new colours with paint and bubble mixture by blowing into the yellow/blue or red/yellow or blue/ red paint. Lay paper on top. How many bubbles can you count?
- Biggest Bubble - insert own straw into a large container of pre blown bubble mixture. Who can make the biggest bubble?
We decided there were too many bubbles to count on challenge 3 because there were loads! We popped more than 5 bubbles in challenge 1. One of the children said they popped 100! (I'm not sure that's quite how many they popped lol)

Yesterday we experimented mixing colours to create a rainbow. We had cups, food colouring, strips of paper and water. We sang along with Jack Hartmann's rainbow song and then tried to work out how we could create a rainbow of colours. We only had red, yellow and blue. We know how to mix these colours together but this time we wanted the rainbow to mix from one cup to th next. It was very exciting watching the colour soak up the paper strips but then it stopped! We have been wetting the paper today to see if that helps. So far there is no rainbow but don't worry, we have another idea to try tomorrow.
Sing along with Jack Hartmann here:

Nursery had a lovely Friday afternoon in the garden with Stuart. They used some tarpaulin and pegs to make a den to hide from the rain. It poured down with rain but the den the children worked together to make kept them safe and dry. The children were very excited when they got to wear their special gardening hats. Well done Nursery - great teamwork!

NEM had a wonderful time on their trip to Let us Play Little Town. We went on a big yellow double decker bus to the venue, played in lots of different role play areas including an ice cream shop, garden centre, post office, cafe and lots more! They enjoyed an exciting story-telling session, where they listened to Goldilocks and the Three Bears and got to enjoy a morning snack and take part in some craft activities too. The children were very well behaved and had lots of fun. Well done Nursery!

This morning we held a glider competition in the astrocourt as one of our Friday Challenges. We all got the chance the throw the glider and the person who threw it the furthest was the winner. Some of our attempts ended up with nose dives lol. Afterwards, we chased after the glider that Mrs Ganner threw. "It kept on flying and it went under the fence!" "It flew so far away." "It's wonderful!" "It's great" "It was so much fun" the children told us.
Our winner held the glider as we all cheered.

Today we have been creating some very special cards. Some of us live with our Dads. Some of us don't live with our Dads. Some of us don't have a Daddy but we all have one special man who we love and this is a song for them. Click the link to hear us sing

Today in Nursery Mrs Ganner's class were learning about journeys and transport. This morning we explored lots of enhancements to our environment that had a transport theme or linked to an amazing book called 'The Flying Bath'.
This afternoon we experimented with different junk modelling bottles and boxes, to find out what would happen if we used them as boats. We discovered that some materials aren't very good to use as boats. "Cardboard breaks and it goes squishy." We liked the plastic containers because they all floated but we found out that if you fill a bottle up with water it sinks because it's so heavy. Can you experiment at home to find things from around the house that would float? If you do, send a photo in to nursery@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk
We also tried to find as many ways as possible to move around the outdoor area - can you see us pushing pedals, sliding, bouncing and walking? How do you travel to school? Do you transport yourself on your legs or do you come to school in a different way?
Have fun being scientists and finding out about transport at home!

Today we celebrated the end of a busy half term by making some fruit kebabs. They were for us to eat, not for minibeasts!
First we cut the fruit (we cut it lengthways so it's safe to eat). Then we pushed it onto the kebab stick. After that most of us put two chocolate chips onto the minibeast, so it could see lol. Finally we ate our yummy fruit snacks. We held the kebab sticks safely so we didn't get hurt.
Most of the children had never eaten a blackberry. All of the children tried all of the fruit. They know it's good to try new things.
"It was very tasty." "It was very juicy." The banana is soft." "Blackberries are so yummy and they're healthy."I want to make kebabs with my Mummy." " Tomorrow I will make one at my house." "It was delicious!"
Sunflower update and garden fun!
Date: 16th May 2024 @ 6:26pm
The children have worked hard caring for their sunflower and have enjoyed watching the stem and the shoot appear. They have also had a wonderful time exploring the garden with Stuart the gardener planting peas and smelling the herbs!
Date: 10th May 2024 @ 11:32am
As part of our Friday challenges, the children went on a minibeast hunt in our school garden. The children used a photo checklist to encourage them to record the minibeasts they found during the minibeast hunt. The children did a great job at finding the different minibeasts, including a woodlouse, worm, snail, ladybirds and more! They also found a beattle which was not on our checklist - well spotted Nursery!

Nursery had so much fun in their P.E lesson with Zahra from City in the Community. They listened so well and followed Zahara's instructions. They loved pretending to be 'cheeky birds' in the farm game. Well done Nursery!

Today Mrs Ganner's Class explored the garden and worked with our resident gardener, Stuart. He knows lots of things about gardening and he's going to teach us lots of interesting things.
We were amazed by how many flowers had bloomed in our school garden since the last time we visited. There were so many different shapes and sizes and colours to look at.
Stuart showed us how to sow a line of peas. We're going to come back in two weeks to see how much they have grown. Before the end of term we'll be eating our own peas!

This morning, one of our Friday Challenges was to look at and then talk about the progress our sunflowers have made. We planted them nearly two weeks ago and we are beginning to see some progress. We counted only four seedlings but we think the others are growing roots. We can't see the roots because they are under the soil. The seed coat opens up and the roots grow down then the shoot grows up.
Here are a few photos of our challenge:

To finish the end of an amazing unit learning about planting, we created flowers using our own choice of media. we snipped, tore, coloured, glued and we are very proud of what we made.
Just look at how stunning our sunflowers are 🤩
😃 A fun filled return to school 🏫
Date: 25th Apr 2024 @ 8:28pm
Our return to school has involved lots of exciting learning experiences. We've been planting, looking after the babies, visiting our new florists, having a BBQ grill and picnic, making flower gardens and creating patterns. Playing outside in is such a lot fun. We love to play together and we don't mind it when it rains (we know the plants need a drink) but we love playing in the sunshine the most ☀️

The children returned after the holidays to a selection of items in the classroom. A small scroll covered in muddy paw prints which read: You will need… . some mud, a pot, seeds, gloves and a watering can. We looked inside of the bag to find some gardening tools, some pots, a small pouch of seeds and an empty packet of cat treats. We gathered ideas to think who could have sent us these things.
The children worked together to plant a seed for the cat. After reading our new story Jasper's Beanstalk, we discovered Pete the cat had not come back but it was a different cat called Jasper!!
When we asked the children what Jasper had asked them to do this week, they said:
"Plant a seed" "Grow a beanstalk" "We put water on it"
"Put it near the window" "sunlight"
We hope you enjoy looking at our pictures!

This morning Mrs Ganner took the butterflies back to our school garden.
One of the butterflies flapped its wings and then it landed on her finger! Another one flew off high up in the sky.
Have you seen our butterflies flying around Clayton? Make sure you wave and say bye bye if you see them.

All 3 butterflies have been happy sipping the sugar water and the fruit in their enclosure. They love to sit in the net Mrs Ganner put inside.
Tomorrow is release day for them. Don't worry, we'll video it for you so you don't miss it!

I missed the final butterfly emerging too! So sorry Nursery.
Here is our 3rd butterfly resting and a picture of the darkened Chrysalises after a week of changing fromcaterpillars onto butterflies. It's called metamorphosis - can you say that word?
Clap the syllables like we do in phonics
met - a - mor - pho - sis (5 syllables)

The Caterpillars are having an Easter holiday too!
Date: 28th Mar 2024 @ 6:58pm
Over the past three weeks we have been watching caterpillars grow. They arrived as teeny tiny caterpillars and two days ago, after growing a lot bigger, they climbed uop to the top of their pot and started to make a chrysalis. Theyre hanging from that lid on a chrysalis station in Mrs Ganner's house!
Here's what they look like now and over the Ester holidays Mrs Ganner will post updates so keep checking back to see what will happen next. (The children have been learning all about lifecycles and they know The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle so if youre not sure just ask them).
You can enjoy listening to the story here:

To celebrate Easter and the start of spring, Nursery had an Easter bonnet parade which was a huge success. Parents and loved ones gathered on Wednesday morning to watch the children march around the playground wearing their homemade Easter themed hats.
The children also sang Easter and Spring action songs with the grown-ups. Some of them even joined in!
Well done to the children for making such fabulous bonnets! It made the Easter bunny very happy!

Nursery had a fun-filled Red Nose Day. They designed a funny face with a red nose, played musical statues and played the 'keepy uppy' game with red balloons and enjoyed playing a traditional game of twister too.
Thank you to everyone who came dressed in red clothes and donated to a wonderful cause!
