Year 6RJ: Blog items

Sentence of The Day

Date: 1st May 2020 @ 9:02am

Good morning year 6! Can you believe it is Friday already? Today’s sentence of the day is a short piece of dialogue to show characterisation and how to organise speech.

“I really do’nt like the look of this place Tom,” whispered Ahmet.   That strange symbol reminds of something I’ve seen before and it is giving me a bad feeling about this place.”

“Oh stop being a scaredy-cat as usual Ahmet; honestly we will be in and out as quick as a flash, once we get proof that we went in all of the rooms. Come on!” insisted Tom.

Can you find the two punctuation errors. One is a piece of punctuation that is in the wrong place and the other is a missing piece of speech punctuation.

I would also like you to look at the word ‘bad’ and see if you can use an improved word which still fits in with the sentence.

EXTRA! EXTRA!

Write the next DAD sentences as they enter the house.

Describe what they see as soon as they enter.

Explain an action-how or what do the characters do?

Dialogue- What do they say to one another?

The Boy at the Back of the Class Chapter 12

Date: 1st May 2020 @ 9:00am

Here is the next Chapter Syrah and the Sea. Spot my mistake at the start of the chapter!

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=JUpTFZ2

Why do you think that no one could stop asking Ahmet questions even though Mrs Khan had specifically asked them not to?

Who are the ‘Messengers’? What is their job?

Why is Victor the worst Messenger? Use evidence from pages 134 and 135 to help you answer.

Had Brenden-the-Bully learned his lesson? Use page 136 to find evidence to support your answer.

Did the narrator of the story want to give Ahmet his Tintin book? If not why didn’t he just take it back?

When the narrator heard about Ahmet’s sister, his mother and his father he wanted to cry. Why did he have to stop himself?

What do you think might happen next to change everything?

CC vocabulary

Date: 30th Apr 2020 @ 3:51pm

Hi everyone, I was just wondering how you are getting along with the CC activity for this week. Look back through the blog if you missed it. Miss Thornton and I are completing a vocabulary course online and one of our tasks this week is to write up what we have understood so far and to use as many key words as possible… so we are having a little competition!  Here is a little challenge for you too… how many of the words below you can include in your writing – remember you can present your writing as you wish or maybe you could make a GLOSSARY of this key vocabulary instead.

#THROWBACK THURSDAY

Date: 30th Apr 2020 @ 1:59pm

Good afternoon Year 6,

I have just been chatting with Miss Thornton and Miss Kenwell and we are all missing your lovely faces so much! Thank you for sending us in your heart pictures and examples of your learning! You are all keeing so busy-well done!

Here is a little film from way back in November at the IWM -it seems so long ago now! How many familiar faces can you spot?

Missing you all,

Mrs Ranyard, Miss Thornton and Miss Kenwell

#Throwback Thursday!

The Boy at the Back of the Class Chapter 11

Date: 30th Apr 2020 @ 10:55am

Here is Chapter 11 for you to follow today. I think the narrator of the story is like Felix from 'Once' in so many ways!

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=k9oSlNI

Think about Chapter 12. Using the title as a clue, what do you think the next chapter will be about?

Will he get to ask Ahmet any more of his questions?

Do you think Brenden-the-Bully will play anymore tricks?

Wellbeing challenge number 14

Date: 30th Apr 2020 @ 10:01am

Good morning everyone,

I hope everyone enjoyed some relaxing colouring yesterday, here is a picture of mine. It isn't quite finished yet but I had a nice relaxing hour doing it last night:

Today's challenge is to do a mindfulness breathing activity. Mindfulness can help you relax and be in the moment, appreciating everything that's around you.

Just one breath

Find a relaxing place where you won't be disturbed. Sit in a comfortable position, either with your legs crossed or any comfortable posture. This activity can be done in as little as one minute, but you can also do it for longer periods of time.

Begin by setting a timer for one minute.

Start breathing deeply in and out. Notice how the breath feels as it moves in and out of your body. Notice how the air feels on your skin. Pay attention to any sensations that you notice or any sounds that you hear.

Take another slow deep breath and see if you can imagine how the breath moves down into the lungs and then back up again. Thank your body and breath for giving you life and keeping you healthy.

Take one more deep breath and hold the breath for a moment - then release it.

If any thoughts worry you, try and imagine your thoughts immersed in a white, puffy cloud and push the thought cloud out of your awareness.

Afterward, notice how you feel after taking this one-minute break.

If you want to tell me about your experience or send any photos of yourself doing the activity then e-mail me on EALhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk.

There are more simple instructions below.

Mrs Glover

Sentence of The Day

Date: 30th Apr 2020 @ 9:35am

Good morning year 6. I hope you enjoyed writing a DAD (description, action, dialogue) sentence yesterday and you noticed that I had misspelt fierce and apprehensive yesterday. I asked you also to see if you could improve the word 'walked'. You could have used stumbled or trudged

Today the sentence I am going to write is an action sentence using an expanded list and powerful vocabulary, making sure I keep the atmosphere needed for a spooky story.

Tom and Ahmet knew it was too late to turn back now!  A dare was a dare!

Cautiously, Tom lifted the old, tarnished gate latch; the gate swung open, forced by the wind that had whipped up a strange force around them, they both clung on to each other, trembling, as they made their way to the ancient, warped front door and both stopped simultaneously and stared at the strange, yet familiar, symbol right in the center.

Can you spot the spelling mistake?

I have also included a 5/6 spelling in my sentence can you find it?

What do you think the word simultaneously means?

EXTRA! EXTRA!

Can you add some dialogue? What might Tom say to Ahmet? What could he reply?

Wellbeing challenge number 13

Date: 29th Apr 2020 @ 10:35am

Hello everyone,

It's a rather miserable looking Wednesday out there so my wellbeing challenge today is an indoor one.

It's actually quite a simple challenge today; I'd simply like you to do some colouring. Colouring is a lovely relaxing activity that you can do on your own for some me-time or together with a family member to make it a more sociable activity.

I think most of you were given some colouring pages when we finished school but if you've already used these and don't have any more at home then good news, there is a website where you can do online colouring:

https://www.online-coloring.com/

Or you could always draw something to colour! Anything you like.

I have a new Enchanted Forest colouring book that my husband bought me (pictured below) that I'm going to do a bit of colouring in later, maybe while I listen to a podcast or to some music to have a bit of a break from staring at a screen. I'll post a picture of my efforts tomorrow.

Remember to send in pictures of your challenges to EALhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Past challenges

A big thanks to Roderigo from Year 1 who sent me a picture of his crystal ball challenge from yesterday, some fantastic goals there!

The Boy at the Back of the Class Chapter 10 Part 2

Date: 29th Apr 2020 @ 10:03am

Hi everyone! Well here is the next instalment of our story-part 2 of chapter 10.

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=PqmcYvQ

Questions

On page 10, what country did Ahmet go to and where did he stay?

Why do you think Ahmet and Ms Hemsi used pictures to explain Ahmet’s story?

Does Ahmet like living in England? Use evidence on page 112 to support your answer.

How do you think everyone felt after hearing Ahmet’s story?

What question would you have asked Ahmet?

Why didn’t Mrs Khan want the children to ask Ahmet questions without checking with her or Ms Hemsi first?

Sentence of The Day

Date: 29th Apr 2020 @ 9:26am

Good morning year 6. Today we are going to continue to look at Spooky Stories and the sentence you are going to explore would be ideal for you to use at the start of a Spooky Story to hook in your reader.

As the feirce wind howled around Tom and Ahmet, the moonlight giving them limited visibility, they aprehensively walked up the uneven path and approached the ancient uninviting gates which guarded the monstrous house beyond.

Can you find two spelling errors? They are quite tricky!

I have also missed out an important piece of punctuation. CLUE- It is used to separate adjectives.

I would also like you to think of a better word than walked.

Write out your sentence and send it to us at our email address or Tweet us your sentence.

EXTRA, EXTRA!!

Could you now add to my sentence using DAD - I have written the description now you can add an action from the characters then some dialogue?

The Boy at the Back of the Class Chapter 10 Part 1

Date: 28th Apr 2020 @ 12:45pm

Good afternoon year 6, what a great day I am having today in school. I didn't want to miss reading chapter 10 so I have done it in school with two special guest appearances. See if you can tell who it is as I am reading with them.

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=sQ4QrpY

Can you think after hearing the first part of Chapter 10 what else Ahmet might talk about and where are the rest of his family?

Wellbeing challenge number 12

Date: 28th Apr 2020 @ 10:55am

Good morning everyone,

Today's challenge is all about thinking positivity and making the most of your time while you're not at school smiley.

Imagine looking into a cyrstal ball 3 months from now.

Draw or write what challenges you are facing, what positive changes you want to make and what might be different in 3 months time.

Try to focus on things that seem possible to achieve like starting a new hobby, learning a few words in a new language or getting better at some of your learning like reading or times tables.

I've done mine on the computer (on MS Word) as my paper is in the study where my husband is on a video call for work so I didn't want to disturb him! But you can do yours however you want.

I've included a picture of mine below if you want to have a look!

Please feel free to tell me about any of the wellbeing challenges you have done, I'd love to see what you're all doing in your free time! You can now e-mail me on Ealhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk to let me know (or to contact me or Mrs Harriott about any EAL home learning too)

Have a good day!

Wellbeing challenge number 11

Date: 27th Apr 2020 @ 11:16am

Happy Monday everyone!

I hope everyone had a lovely weekend and made the most of the lovely warm weather (I think it might be the last hot sun for a while although it seems nice so far this morning!)

Today's challenge is to do something that I have just discovered myself although my husband has been nagging me to do it for a while - Listen to a podcast.

A podcast is a bit like a radio show that you can download to your tablet, phone or laptop and listen to either while you relax or while you go for a walk. Some include music, some are educational, some entertain you and some are just good for helping you relax. You can listen to them with others or by yourself if you need a bit of me time.

This weekend I have been listening to one called Sounds of the 90s by Fearne Cotton that includes lot of music from the 90s as well as intervews with 90s pop stars. I've been listening to it while I go on my hour long walks every day and I think some of the teachers may also enjoy it!

Here are some podcasts I've found that I think you might all like, the links are under each description:

But Why: A pocast for curious kids
A podcast answering lots of questions that you may find interesting!

What if world
With wacky episode titles such as "What if Legos were alive?" and "What if sharks had legs?," this series takes ridiculous "what if" questions submitted by young listeners and turns them into a new story every two weeks.http://www.whatifworldpodcast.com/

Noodle Loaf
A delightful offering from a music education specialist and his co-host daughter will get kids of all ages singing, rhyming, moving, and engaging in all kinds of musical games. The segments, games, and songs are so silly and upbeat that the whole family will enjoy participating. Little listeners can even add their voice to the theme song in the podcast's electronically compiled kid's choir!

Connected Curriculum

Date: 26th Apr 2020 @ 9:33pm

Good Morning everyone!

Our Connected Curriculum this half term is Climate Change, and more specifically, ‘How is Clayton connected with the global community?'  This is a really exciting topic looking at the world and how we can find a way to do our part to help…I’m sure that you will all find out lots of interesting facts to share.

I will post a different CC activity each week on the blog for you to complete at a time that suits you best during the week.

This is also a chance to get creative in how you want to present your work… draw pictures, make posters or mind maps, write letters of fact files, make models or create PowerPoints and videos to showcase your learning!

So… TASK 1

This week’s task is to research climate change-What does it mean? How does it affect our world? What are the main causes? Is there anything being done to combat climate change?

You can present you work as you wish... perhaps a powerpoint or mind map or maybe video your own newsround clip to present your ideas for your younger viewers!

Here are some useful video clips to help get you started…

 https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z849q6f/articles/z7dkhbk

(try the little quiz after the clip- see how you get on)

https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/34961514

I have also attached a ppt to give you extra information- good luck!

Don't forget to send pictures or videos of what you have created to y6homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk or our class twitter page we love to see what you are doing- it really makes our day!

Have a lovely day,

Mrs Ranyard, Miss Kenwell and Misss Thornton

The Boy at the Back of the Class Chapter 8

Date: 24th Apr 2020 @ 3:48pm

Good afternoon year 6! What a lovely day it is. Well here is your final instalment of the story for this week and I think it is starting to get really exciting. This chapter is very long and to be honest I found it quite tricky reading it all in one whole recording!! Sorry for any mistakes I made, I was getting slightly distracted by my tortoise scratching away next to me. I think he likes the story too! laugh

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=9Bkkejg

After reading/listening, can you write down any similarities in this chapter to our last book 'Once' and Felix's life?  (Text to Text)

Prediction- What do you think will happen the next day at school? (A clue- The next chapter is called 'The Big Fight'.

Remember to share your answers with us on our year 6 Twitter page or using our year 6 email address, we'd love to hear from you!

Have a lovely weekend-Stay Safe and Stay at Home!

Date: 24th Apr 2020 @ 10:08am

Good morning everyone, another lovely sunny day! I can't wait to get out there in the sun for a bit.

Fot the last day of the week I'm giving you a slightly different wellbeing challenge today and it's something that always makes me feel happy and a bit better if I'm feeling a bit low.

Today's challenge is to do something nice for someone. Here are some ideas below although feel free to do one of your own ideas!

1. Read or tell a story to a younger brother or sister

2. Tidy your room

3. Do a chore or job for someone at home

4. Give someone a compliment

5. Share a toy or some food with someone at home

6. Make someone a present, picture or card

7. Offer to help an adult with the cooking or washing up

8. Write someone a poem or story

9. Tell someone a joke

10. Phone a friend or send them a nice message

See how many of the 10 you can do and remember to let us know what you have done!

I'm going to do some baking for my husband for my good deed and maybe make him a nice dinner as well. In fact, I might go and take him a cup of tea while he's doing his work! :-)

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Glover

Sentence of The Day

Date: 23rd Apr 2020 @ 11:27am

Year 6 I have been back onto Spag.com this morning and it is great to see you completing the set tasks. I had a look through some of the questions on the 'Hyphens, dashes & bullet points (A)' task and noticed you all found number 1 tricky.

In the list below, a word has been spelt correctly, but written inconsistently with the rest of the list. Click and select the incorrect word.

For the tripremember to bring the following clothes:

• A thickwarm jumper.

• waterproof jacket with a hood.

• Sturdy hiking boots.

• A bottle of water.

Can you spot the error? When you are writing bullet points the rule is they all need to be consistent, that is follow the same rule. For example if you use a capital letter to start the first sentence then all the bullet points below must start with a capital letter and the same if you start with a lowercase letter. This rule also applies to the full stop at the end. If your first bullet point has a full stop then all of them should and if your first one does not have a full stop then the rest should not have one either.

Get it!

Complete the one above and now try this one.

In the list below, an error has been made, one of the sentences has been written inconsistently with the rest of the list. Identify the mistake.

There are many things you can do to keep yourself active and healthy:

• drink plenty of water

• join in with Joe Wicks in the morning to get your heart rate going

• be creative and make something

• eat healthy foods like fruit and vegetables.

CAN YOU SPOT IT?

Let us know by sending us an email or posting your answer to our Twitter account.
